@@HannaHsOverInvested Probably already explained but Legions 2 and 11 were meant to be the DIY Legion before they went harder with the lore. In the current Lore both legions did something so horrible that they've been erased from all Imperial history. They even removed them from some of the memories of the other Primarchs. Rogal Dorn of the Imperial Fists at one point confronted the Emperor's second in command Malcador about why he'd removed the memories of Two and Eleven from him and forced him to give them back. Basically once he got them back he was like "Yeah removing this was the right thing. Please take them away again"

Context: The jumpscare-bits reference two Legions that were "PURGED FROM ALL RECORD OOH SPOOKY AND GRIMDARK." Real truth, back in the day (and I do mean like, WAY BACK) before Warhammer 40k was the title, it was Rogue Trader in the 80s. They made 20 legions (not the same as our current ones) where two of them were "Make your own legion!" options. So the new, more serious lore has to reconcile that somehow. Also, you do NOT like the Fallen. They had a falling out (heh) with the regular Dark Angels over basically personal pride and being too old for the new cool kids in the legion, a lot of stuff went down to make bad blood between Lion el'Jonson the Chad Knight and his adoptive dad, Luther (also dubbed the Arch-Betrayer). It's basically just the King Arthur vs Mordred thing.

@j.schmitt220

Fun fact: The purged two legions were originally purged, not because of a great sin that they have committed, but because they had managed to redeem themselves in the eyes of the Imperium. They still couldn't continue to exist due to the crime they had committed in the first place, but by redeeming themselves they were allowed to have that sin expunged from all records and their shame to being forgotten. That was Rick Priestleys original intend behind the redaction of the two legions, but got horrible misinterpreted by later GW writers. It's a bit ironic, because the misinterpretation of events and information is kiiiinda a big cornerstone of the early Warhammer 40'000 (which was in large part written by Priestley). And then it happened to Priestley IRL.

With the 4th legion Iron warriors, people often focus on the primarch's negatives, he was/is a very bitter man but that's because he and his legion fought the most and the worst bloodiest battles for the Emperor and received no recognition for it nor asked for thanks. Perturabo (Peter Turbo) was a great inventor who literally wrote the book for sieges that the Imperium still uses today, they also briefly saved the Imperium from a gigantic Ork Waaaagh that could've destroyed the imperium.

The Ciaphis Cain books are really good but part of the draw of them is reading them while having read the other books so you can enjoy the comparison between the sometimes goofy antics of Cain and the more grimdark aspects of other books. There are alot of theories on what happened to the 2nd and 11th legions. The main one is that there were a bunch of genetic defects in their geneseed and were purged and censored in order to save face. What is canon is that its a very uncomfortable subject for the Emperor and the Primarchs whenever they are brought up, that the 2nd legion's primarch was a stoic party pooper(According to Fulgrim, Purple People's Primarch), and the 11th was good friends with Lorgar, and his [redacted] hit him hard, according to Word Bearers who referenced it.

Bile i think knows about atleast one legion. I remember hearing a theory or on the wiki that one of the reasons the Ultramarines were so numerous was because they absorbed a large portion of the forgotten legions. Like choosing a favorite Sith Lord from Star Wars. In terms of how to interact with the universe, there are MANY ways. The main way is through the tabletop wargame. This is the part that you call the painting game. Basically you buy boxes of the little figures, build them, paint them up, and then battle them against someone else's army. The rules come in a textbook called a Codex, and every army has their own codex that explains the rules for the specific units of that army. There are also lots of videogames and books set in the universe.

So extra content: Dark Angels - The Dark Angel's Fallen, are Space Marines who went traitor during the Horus Heresy but did not side with Horus since they went traitor to gain independence for their planet. After the Heresy, many would ironically turn to chaos, but others are probably still normal - all are hunted the same, but if they believe in the SMALLEST possibility of any of their allies knowin or allying with a fallen they are not afraid of silencing or betraying them before or mid-battle. Lion'el's pretty much not nice, he believes in doing things by any means necessary and does not care about the feelings of others even going so far as to lie to his brothers when they made a very delicate alliance during the Heresy. 2nd Legion - Data was wiped, IRL reason was that 2 legions were made blank so that you could make a custom one in the past, lore reason was that they did something so bad that all of their information was purged, from data deletion to page burning, to memory wipes, the only people who still remember are a few of the primarchs (traitors iirc) and the Emperor himself who ordered the purge. Emperor's Children - They originally had a curse that mutated and killed them early in their Space Marine life, Fulgrim managed to cure it but it did cause some rumors. Fulgrim was transformed because of the sword in his hand that slowly corrupted him by the demon inside it. Their pride was huge, for good reason since their symbol was the Emperor's personal Aquila, but they also came from a world that was...Bland... Fulgrim hated how the world was boring and gray so he had his legion strive in everything to be as unique and colorful as possible. Iron Legion - Perturabo was pretty much the only reason the Horus Hersy went even remotely well for the traitor side, and he had a more understandable reason of joining. Perturabo was a builder and a creator at heart, he HATED war. His planet suffered war over and over while his dad (adoptive) kept praising the gods for blessing the planet with Pertrurabo. Perturabo ended all wars on his planet with his own war and when the Emps arrived to take him he thought he finally found someone who understood his vision. Instead, he was assigned to a legion whose sole purpose is to fight in the most destructive and attrition-filled warzones in the galaxy while another primarch was given the task to build the imperial palace. And he got NO RECOGNITION OR PRAISE, from either side. White Scars - The 'roast god' nickname for Jaghatai was from a book where Fulgrim belittled him for something about his troops, something along the lines of "I don't here much from your troops Jaghatai", to which he responds "And I here you DO things to yours." Referencing the weird curse cure.

What makes Perturabo so petty and bitter? A painter painted a beautiful painting after a great crusade battle of all the legions involved, listing the iron warriors and an "unnamed legion " and had an iron warrior in the background getting mercy killed. So Perturabo collected every copy of the painting and then stomped on them all, pissed on them set them on fire and then pissed the fire out. He made a beautiful pure gold psychic sextant for Magnus only to smash in infront of him because he knew what it was for. He smashed Fulgrims face through a beautiful clockwork moving titan that Perty made, he was admiring cuz Fulgrim was vain and he wanted to prove a point. He made an impregnable fortress and dared the Imperial Fists to siege it solely to prove that he's better then Dorn.

Fun fact. The first legion is the Dark Angels lead by Lion'el Johnson Lionel Johnson IRL is a poet that wrote a poem called The Dark Angel (probably about how he was gay but he's a catholic and it's the 1800s) The Dark Angel DARK Angel, with thine aching lust To rid the world of penitence: Malicious Angel, who still dost My soul such subtile violence! Because of thee, no thought, no thing, Abides for me undesecrate: Dark Angel, ever on the wing, Who never reachest me too late! When music sounds, then changest thou Its silvery to a sultry fire: Nor will thine envious heart allow Delight untortured by desire. Through thee, the gracious Muses turn, To Furies, O mine Enemy! And all the things of beauty burn With flames of evil ecstasy. Because of thee, the land of dreams Becomes a gathering place of fears: Until tormented slumber seems One vehemence of useless tears. When sunlight glows upon the flowers, Or ripples down the dancing sea: Thou, with thy troop of passionate powers, Beleaguerest, bewilderest, me. Within the breath of autumn woods, Within the winter silences: Thy venomous spirit stirs and broods, O Master of impieties! The ardour of red flame is thine, And thine the steely soul of ice: Thou poisonest the fair design Of nature, with unfair device. Apples of ashes, golden bright; Waters of bitterness, how sweet! O banquet of a foul delight, Prepared by thee, dark Paraclete! Thou art the whisper in the gloom, The hinting tone, the haunting laugh: Thou art the adorner of my tomb, The minstrel of mine epitaph. I fight thee, in the Holy Name! Yet, what thou dost, is what God saith: Tempter! should I escape thy flame, Thou wilt have helped my soul from Death: The second Death, that never dies, That cannot die, when time is dead: Live Death, wherein the lost soul cries, Eternally uncomforted. Dark Angel, with thine aching lust! Of two defeats, of two despairs: Less dread, a change to drifting dust, Than thine eternity of cares. Do what thou wilt, thou shalt not so, Dark Angel! triumph over me: Lonely, unto the Lone I go; Divine, to the Divinity.

The thing about the Emperor's Children isn't that they're just into perfection (which they are), but also their search for stimulation. Much like the Eldar, they seek to find the most perfect stimulation of their senses, whether it be through sculpture, painting, music, combat, etc. Their chief Apothecary, Fabius Bile, is on par with the Dark Eldar Haemonculi in his search for new ways to alter his fellow marines so that they can be more efficient and perfect killers while also cranking their senses up to 17. The book "Fulgrim" in the Horus Heresy series shows their downfall to this state perfectly.

We don't know anything about either legion, other than they existed and were expunged from all Imperial records and the traitor legions don't reference them, either. There's a few hints and nods to their fate in various places that has led to a lot of fan speculation over the decades, but ultimately nothing concrete. One of the main theories is they were destroyed in the Rangdan Xenocides, since we know one or both legions fought in those campaigns. The Rangdan, however, were like a mashup of Animorph's Yerks, the thing from John Carpenter's "The Thing," and the xenomorphs from "Alien." It's possible the legions and their primarchs were infested or possessed by the Rangdan, resulting in their purge. Imperials don't bring them up because they don't want to disrupt the image of Space Marines as demigods, while Chaos doesn't want to admit they can be corrupted by xenos. My own personal headcannon is one (or both) of the primarchs was a woman and was purged to prevent Space Marines overtaking humanity as a new super species, while another of the lost primarchs landed on an alien planet and was raised by xenos. So when the Emperor and the other primarchs found them, that primarch refused to betray the aliens who raised them. These two ideas explain why neither traitors nor loyalists bring up the lost legions, without having to hand wave things away with time travel/memory wipe shenanigans.

Legion II and as you'll see (SPOILERS AHEAD) in further part Legion XI "officially" have never existed. All records about them in Imperial archives were destroyed and thus little is known about them. As far as I know it was originally made this way by Games Workshop, so that players could have freedom in creating their own Space Marine chapters with assumption that one of those Legions was loyal and one traitor. But as Horus Heresy books were slowly released across the last 16 years, few small details were also included about those 2 Legions changing a little original purpose: - it's still the fact that all records were destroyed. Even sculptures showing 2 lost Primarchs in inner parts of Imperial Palace on Terra, where all Primarchs used to have their chambers prepared by Emperor. - It was a great tragedy what happened to both lost Primarchs and their Legions. - There's very high possibility that Emperor used his psyker powers to affect memories of humans who knew about those two Legions. Or in typical Imperium way such people were just literally purged or affected in way that they couldn't speak anymore about those Legions (for example made into lobotimized mindless Servitors) - The only people who still knew about them were Emperor himself, his closest aide and someone similar to a friend - Malcador the Sigillite, other Primarchs and possibly his personal guard - Adeptus Custodes. Though Primarchs were forced by Emperor to make vow to never speak of "lost" brothers and their Legions again. - Because of the above point we know that whatever happened to both Legions happened during the Great Crusade after the last Primarch was found but some time before events leading to Horus Heresy started. - As far as I know Space Marines of one of lost Legions (most likely II) have been literally purged - it's possible that they had some kind of mutation that affected them heavily, made them unable to be used in any way and couldn't have been cured even when Primarch was found, possibly even affected Primarch himself and thus made purge the only option. Emperor supposedly used Legion VI - Space Wolves to perform this purge. There are few others Legions that had negative side effects that almost caused similar action towards whole Legion, but they were cured once Primarch was found - like for example Legion XV - Thousand Sons - It's not stated directly, but it's heavily suggested that Space Marines of other Legion (most likely XI) were incorporated into ranks of Legion XIII - Ultramarines, as their number grew rapidly at one point during Great Crusade in a way that would be impossible with normal "recruitment" process. - There're some theories due single line in one of most recent rulebooks for tabletop game (January this year) that Primarch of Legion XI is imprisoned in stasis in one of secret vaults under Imperial Palace.

He did not present the 2d Legion because two of the 20 legions had their genetic father corrupted beyond all redemption before the Emperor could find them back (all of the primarchs were teleported to a different planet during a big warp tempest made by evil gods). Those primarchs were so corrupted the Emperor commanded to one of his loyal sons to kill them and their legions were canceled. The loyal sons those primarchs should have received wereintegrated to other legions and their names were forgotten, that's why he doesn't present them. They actualy never really existed in the eyes of the Emperor since their genetic dads were corrupted.

TL;DR of the Horus Heresy: Emps gives the Word Bearer legion a kick to the nuts and blows up their favorite city, so their Primarch (Lorgar Aurelian) decides to sell his soul to Chaos because of reasons that'll be revealed later. A space marine named Erebus corrupts Horus with a Chaos knife, Horus pulls a prank (massacre) on the three weaker loyalist legions, goes to Earth, yada-yada-yada, turns Emps into a quadrapalegic, but not before Emps nukes him and his soul with a big, fat Kame Hame Ha.

So the story behind the Fallen: During the Great Crusade, while Jonson was off with the bulk of the Legion fighting xenos and whatnot, his mentor/father figure Luther, who was left behind on Caliban to oversee the integration of their world into the Imperium and train new recruits, became very disillusioned with how their culture and traditions were being homogenized to fit into the overall Imperium doctrine. He also grew very jealous of his protege and all the power and recognition he had been handed simply by being the Emperor's son, when previously they had all been equals in The Order (the knightly order that fought off the Chaos spawned beasts on the planet). Before Jonson appeared on the planet, Luther had been the greatest knight of the age, and suddenly, that was all gone. Luther became more and more envious and even nearly neglected to advise Jonson of a plot by a newly discovered human world called Sarosh to send a nuke to their flagship while they were working to integrate them into the Imperium so that their own world might remain as it was. This was what Jonson sent him back to Caliban for, not formally, but everyone knew it, and that helped Luther to stoke the flames of envy in those left behind with him. They wanted to go and earn glory in battle as well, but they were left to babysit the newbies and oversee the Imperial takeover. Thus, after much griping and grumbling amongst themselves, they declared themselves independent from the Imperium, and expelled all the Imperial functionaries and civilians, and fortified Caliban against Lion El'Jonson's inevitable return. Chaos worked on the now Fallen Angels of Caliban, and when Jonson arrived and confronted Luther, the latter transformed into a Chaos Champion and fought his former charge. Jonson grievously wounded Luther in the fight, but refused to kill him because of their shared history, which caused Luther to shake free from the influence of the Chaos gods. This prompted the Ruinous Powers to lash out as their chosen instrument failed them, and scattered the Fallen Angels throughout the Universe (and throughout time). This also caused the planet to break apart, leaving only The Rock, the biggest chunk left with the fortress-monastery headquarters of the Dark Angels situated on it. This is why the Dark Angels are so intent on finding the Fallen and silencing them, as well as expunging all knowledge that they even exist from the galaxy, because no one else knew that those left on Caliban had turned traitor except for the returning fleet of Dark Angels. If it was known that a large portion of the legion had joined Horus' rebellion, the loyalists would be viewed with great suspicion and possibly be confronted by the Inquisition.

Some say that the Sons of Malice are the mysterious 2nd Legion who went into hiding. This would make sense as to why they would’ve been expunged as being officially recognized as the second Legion as the Sons of Malice are well… Let’s just say they do things that make even Chaos wish they didn’t exist… If you wanna know more about that mysterious group I’d suggest you read up because most of it was expunged from Imperial Records and honestly what is known is horrifying. P.S That scene you saw in the intermission was the Horus Hersey underway and the legions of Horus and the Emperor going into full scale war against each other… FUN! 😂

Bricky has a problem with context. Leaves a lot of it out. Short version: 1st Dark Angels: they prefer the knightly look, they come from a world that had a noble warrior class that spent their time killing monsters. Primarch is amazing at any military skill except trusting. 2nd "we don't talk about Bruno" yeah, shit happened that has never been given details other than what happened was so bad they wiped out every mention of them everywhere. 3rd Emperor's Children. Started out as the pretty boys who loved it when a plan comes together. Obsessed with perfection and beauty that got twisted into going the other direction with it. Now they like pain and torture. Bad guys. 4th Iron Warriors. They liked sieges and huge scale land wars. Worked with the army seamlessly, especially the heavy tanks and artillery sections. They did not care about individuals, their Space Marines fought until they died and were simply replaced. Were the easiest to mass convert humans into Space Marines and only had less than some of the others because their casualty rate was so high. Send them in to the hardest, worst theatres of war and just watch them grind away the enemy. 5th White Scars. Adrenaline junkies crossed with highly spiritual Mongol tribesmen given scifi equipment. Fairly chill, as long as you're on their side and you use your courtesy. Pretty easy, considering they're incredibly dangerous super soldiers wearing the most advanced weapons and armour ever mass produced by humanity.

there is also another legion. which is the legion of the damned. which is a mysterious legion who's origins are extremely speculated on. They appear when the imperium is in most trouble and then vanish if they weren't there. they're appearance is that of Space marines in charred black armor and are on fire constantly. They have flaming skulls for heads. - some believe them to be a regular space marine chapter who got lost in the warp but came back as Imperial Daemons. - or, they are the vengeful spirits of fallen space marines who want vengeance for the betrayal during the horus heresy, who's duty still lives on. They are supposedly lead by the headless corpse of the primarch Ferrus manus of the iron hands legion.

The thing about the Gamer Supps cups is that once they are sold out, that’s it they are gone. Only other place to find them is like eBay for a lot more then they are worth. As stated by others at this point 2nd and 11th legions (known as the Purged and Forgotten, don’t ask me which is which though) were removed from all Imperial Knowledge. In fact when Horus tried to say the primarchs of those legions names, Malcador (Big E’s BFF and regent of the Imperium) almost killed him by force choking him.

Just two 40k books? That’s how it starts. Soon you’ll have to buy more bookshelf’s. The Cain books are probably the best to start with. Don’t be afraid to google whatever nouns you don’t recognize, there’s basically a 40k wiki for everything. Pro-tip - compare prices when buying secondhand books, you may get it in an omnibus (a compendium of the story, usually 3+ books in one, sharing a story arc, like the complete arc usually) they are usually cheaper and newer released than buying all individual books separately. 40k books are amazing, usually, and will devour whatever expendable income you have if you let it.

It's probably being mention but, the dark angles being secretly traitors is a long running semi joke in the 40k fandom. Mainly because, they are massive asswholes and are so obsessed with chasing their fallen brothers. That it makes them traitors by inaction rather than servings the choas gods Like for example if the dark angles had to choice between saving a world from say a ork invasion or chasing down a rumour of a fallen on an planet that was otherwise at peace and secure. They will happy abandon the frist world to the orks to chase down the possabity of the rumour that their might have being a fallen on the 2ed world.

You're not crazy the second legion is [REDACTED] the original idea was to leave people space to make their own legion 1 loyal and 1 traitor (Theoretically), this was like back in 1990 and I actually remember it. They abandoned this idea because it was sort of dumb as it didn't leave ENOUGH room for people to make their own so they semi retconned it into the loyalists having chapters and if you wanted to have chaos marines that weren't affiliated with the original legions you just made a warband with unclear origins or a renegade chapter.

I'm sure it's been said, but the Second and Eleventh Legions in the story of Warhammer 40,000 are two legions of space marines who had their entire history deleted from all records, presumably because they did something awful. We just don't know, because... all information on what they did was... deleted... Nobody knows what they did, what happened to them, not the fans, not the Imperium, not even Games Workshop, who wrote the lore.

The second legion has no official records or anything of the sort, same with the 11th legion. There's a boring lore reason for it, but the main reason is to give players the opportunity to make up their own lore and their own colour schemes for their armies and still have it be kind of canon-adjacent.

So the 2nd and 11th Legion are [Redacted] legions. meaning in lore they exist but no one talks about them or acknowledges that they are even alive anymore. this was made to let players create their own legion and insert them as the so-called 2nd or 11th legion. So in truth, there are only 18th canon legions.
