This implies any sequel was doomed to fail, but I don't think that's true. Have the film follow Clarice hunting him down and keep the mystique around Lecter by showing him sparingly. Meanwhile, set up some kind of emotional punch that develops her character further at the end.

The footage of Hannibal attacking the person was actually the only part with which I take issue - the first movie established that he did so without raising his heart rate, yet here we see him panting and roaring with madman wide-eyes. His ability to remain calm in the eye of a storm even comes into play later on with the hogs.

Maybe a sequel would’ve been interesting if Hannibal was implied to be around rather than actually being shown on screen. Think, Hannibal being this unseen monster leaving messages, familiar deaths slowly approaching your location day by day, no one believes that this unstoppable psycho is coming for you. It’s not the question what is he, but a matter of where is he?
@criesincryptid
@criesincryptid 3 жыл бұрын
That would be interesting because it is kind of the opposite situation of the original. In the first he's in one place for most of it we know where he is but not what he's planning or thinking so if this one played out where we know what he's up to but not where he is would be a nice parallel

Also in the scene straight after the shootout. Mason Verger calls in Cordell and asks him to "Get me the justice department"...... Which is the place Paul Krendler works (Ray liotta)...... We as an audience are supposed to infer that Mason is already influencing the justice department and Paul K.
@etarver13
@etarver13 3 жыл бұрын
I think it’s because it’s to either eventually drive her to run off with Lecter or test her devotion to the Bureau; and in order to do that you have to break or test her devotion to the Bureau. It’s one thing to actually have her do something wrong that cause her to be blamed/demoted, name being dragged through mud, and eventually suspended. It another thing to be unfairly blamed/demoted, name being dragged through the mud, and eventually suspended. So of course they or Harris can’t actually have her do something wrong, it would lessen her trial and her breaking point if she actually did something wrong.

Starling rather than blame Bolton for violating her orders-and even if she did, they'd lecture her on needing to have better control over situations-felt responsible because she was supposed to be in control and things went horribly wrong. It didn't help that Krendler and the others-who unlike Krendler as was pointed out weren't paid by Verger for their influence in the situation-were quick to pass judgment she was weak and in the wrong just because her being the lead-as well as to them a woman-made her an easy target/scapegoat. That Starling was forced to change orders when Bolton violated them didn't help either because as I said, it kept Starling from keeping a tighter handle on things.

Any complaints with the story of the movie can literally be explained by simply saying "They had to change the story from the book because no actress including Foster would do the movie with the original ending, and all the other sub plots from the book were cut because the studio didn't like them so that effected the story as well". And the ending chapter of the book is actually chilling, and it's difficult to live up to Lambs when Lambs was so close to the book, but Hannibal was forced to be so different from the source material. I still enjoy the film for what it is. It isn't the worst Hannibal movie ever.

Lecter then kidnaps Starling, fails to brainwash her into thinking she's his dead sister Misha, they then eat Krendler's brain together and run off to Argentina as lovers. The final chapter is Barney and his girlfriend on holiday in Argentina, Barney spots Lecter and Starling at the opera, Lecter spots Barney and waves which causes Barney to flee the country in terror. It's an ending that honestly shits on what the movie did, but I'm guessing nobody was ready for that Clarice Starling heel turn.

I really liked Hannibal. It's cool when Lecter is more explicitly evil and manipulative, it was pretty fresh to see him free to do the weird stuff that got him locked up, Julianne Moore was a pretty good Clarice, as you said his chemistry with the detective and the brain eating scene are neat, and I liked the implication that Hannibal was traumatized by people eating animals and that's why he identified with Clarice.

I read this then saw it. Book and movie are both shit but the movie ending made more sense than the book ending. Clarice turning into Lecter's lover and cannibal companion was complete bullshit. There are light years between being screwed by FBI bureaucracy (done ham handedly in both book and film) and become a cannibalistic serial killer. It was almost like Harris was appeasing the Lecter fan-girls.

I think the Critic missed the main reasons why Hannibal was not as effective as the other 2 movies. Both Silence Of The Lambs and Red Dragon revolved around well-researched serial killers based on true cases: Buffalo Bill and The Tooth Fairy, two very disturbed and disturbing characters who grounded the films with a gritty and frightening realism. Hannibal was not the focus of the movies. We hardly got to see him in action killing people and, when he did, he used his brains to outsmart his opponents first and put them at a disadvantage even though they were younger and stronger than him. So, his crimes are mostly described but not shown, lending him an aura of mystery and a feeling of potential danger. And, even if he feels like a bit of an unrealistic mastermind super-villian at times, we can overlook this as he is (mostly) locked up and can't get too over-the-top. In Hannibal all this is gone. We see him take on 3 Mafia goons on equal terms and kill all of them in hand-to-hand combat. Hannibal is the central focus now with no grounding "realistic" serial-killers to distract from his all-mightiness. The movie feels like a comic book with Hannibal as our anti-hero going from one kill to the next with no trouble and it never feels like he is in any danger of being caught or killed. And Hannibal Rising proved once again that Hannibal Lecter, as the central character, just doesn't work as well as having him behind the scenes manipulating others to do the dirty work.

Liver is delicious. Fry up some bacon, saute some onions in the left over grease, cook the liver in what's left, pile everything on top of the liver and serve. Yummy.

That's actually my favorite version of Anna and the King. I cry multiple times every time I watch it and I bought the love song from it.
