Thank you for this research. The Truth however is reflected in each story and fairy tale that still lives in our hearts. That shows what truly made Hans immortal- not his circle in society- but his pure brilliant heart and sensitivity. He was brilliant- and will always be brilliant- whether he was a prince or a pauper- and not a soul can take that away from him. Blessed be.

This documentary is very well-thought out. However, there are a view things to consider. You're a rich guy and girl who just had a bay out of wedlock. Yet, because of society, you two are forced to give him/her to another family. Who would you choose? Another wealthy family who could supply the child with a good education, decent meals and clothes OR a poor, peasant family with little meals? Also, Hans Christian had a paternal grandfather who he has been said to favor. Especially as Hans Christian got older.

Perhaps, being too high in society would make the resemblance a bit more obvious? Maybe they sponsored from afar?

I agree. This sounds a bit off. Royal and noble men had a lot of out-of-wedlock children and they didn't even try to hide them. They wouldn't make these bastards their heirs, but they would often recognize them and give them titles. And it was very prestigious for a woman to have a child with a prince even if it was a bastard. Why would the countess give up the child of the future king? Common folk are the ones who had to live with the shame of having a bastard who was often given up for adoption or in the worst case scenario killed so as to not cause the family shame.

@@rayarena879 Not during the 19th century and forward. Then it was just as shameful for high-born people as for anyone.

@@issyd2366 I think it does require a knowledge of the 19th century to understand this. Even then, a lot of weird and abnormal things do happen in royal circles, as always. Personally speaking, if Anderson indeed belonged to the royal family, then his story would remain quite 'Anderson'. If he was inside-out the son of the old shoe-maker, then part of his life story rather fits to the Grimm's fairy tales' logic.

Wasn't Andersen's paternal grandfather insane? When he was a child, Hans himself was afraid that he would become mad like his grandfather.
