It's amazing how many people on KZfaq messed this DIY up with poor camera angles and lighting, spending way too much time talking uneccessarily and cutting out the re-installation. Yours however was nice and clear, especially appreciate seeing both the hydraulic and spring tensioners off the car so I can see the bolt locations and sizes if I need to remove them (I don't know which one I have yet). Thanks.

Hi Han, I just finished up fixing the X5 last night. Turns out the water pump went bad, froze up, and that is what threw the belts off. cracked the pulley as well. I put on a new pulley, tension pulleys, belts, fan clutch, and water pump. Runs like a champ now. Again thanks for the video. gave me all the confidence I needed to get the job done. Saved a ton of money doing it myself as well. Take care, and keep the videos coming.

Wow, I literally just dropped the car off to the shop to get this done cus it was making a noise. You have the best video online on to how to change it. Every other person had some weird camera angle, and you were clear with how to change the stuff. I kinda regret dropping it off. I wanted to try to change this myself since I want to learn to do maintenance work in my 330ci bummmer.

Really? even for someone that has never even changed a tire? The most diy I ever have done to a car was change the headlight bulb on a GTI. I want to buy the tools and take my car apart(as if I were doing this job) just to see if I could do it, and then put it together. Do you think that's a good idea?
@HansGarage7 жыл бұрын
I'd say just dive in and see how far you can go! haha I didnt know anything about working on a car 3 years ago. I just loved figuring out how everything works. Best way to learn is to actually try out and see what you are capable of! Cheers!

WARNING ⚠ Before you remove the upper pulley. Look behind the pulley where it mates up to the alternator. The backside of the pulley and the front side of the alternator have a special way of fitting together. You can't mess this up...if you do the pulley will not line up perfectly. Other than that great video

Very informative video, the problem is how could you pull out the shroud when there is propeller that is on the way, mine is a 325ci 2003 convertible automatic. On your video it seems the propeller is attach to the shroud, it is one piece only.

@KrzysztofC-18 жыл бұрын
I think the upper pulley has a notch on the back that was not shown that needs to fall into place before you tighten the bolt when reinstalling? By the way, great video.

At 10:33 you replaced the tensioner with the old style (instead of the new one without the hydraulic). Why didn't you replace it like you mentioned at the beginning of the video?
@08halit6 жыл бұрын
you said you where going to change the old hudraulic tensioner with newer mechanik tensioner,,but when i watch i see you changing the hydraulic to another hydraulic tensioner..

is it ok to just change the pulley on the tensioner instead of the entire mechanical tensioner?
@HansGarage8 жыл бұрын
Yeap
@NakaiSan.2 жыл бұрын
And why u dont change the dumper too?
@cenabong782 жыл бұрын
Why didn't you install the new tensioner?
@fjwong73373 жыл бұрын
I hear some noise around the belts and pulleys. But not sure what's causing it. If I remove the fan and shroud, I can see better. Even better if I can hear it. So, can I start the engine, with the fan and shroud removed? Thanks Hans.
@fjwong73373 жыл бұрын
The question is really how does I know whether it's the pulley or the tensioner that's bad. If I can take the fan and the shroud off, and start the engine, I can better ascertain which part (tensioner and/or pulley) is bad. I didn't suspect the tensioner, before watching your video. Thanks so much Han.
@fjwong73373 жыл бұрын
Saw it, that the engine does start when the fan is out of the car. At 15:26-15:35!!! Thanks so much Han for showing that.
@joefowler96002 жыл бұрын
Why did you change the tensioner? Was there a problem with it or is it just good practice? I know you mentioned the pulley was noisy. Thanks

Hi what is the smaller belt for exactly?? I have a 320d and the small belt is not on mine , would that cause problems?
@frankcalderon16953 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't cause any problems per se. The small belt is the one that drives the ac compressor. You can drive your car without that belt no problem, the only thing you won't have is the ac. Cheers

If the pulleys are bad, there would be noise. Your fan should be fine

So clutch fan or pump, when I test it with my hand when it's cold it has dragged when it reaches operating temperature is when it's Ben's more friendly and Wobbles I think clutch fan, hopefully not the bearings in the water pump I just changed it not too long ago please give me your opinion

@stevewitkus59717 жыл бұрын
Nice Video Hans but, why didn't you replace the hydraulic tensioner with the new mechanical one that you had? You put the old hydraulic tensioner back in.
@HansGarage7 жыл бұрын
Steve Witkus i was just showing you had the option to and mine didnt fit the new mechanical one
@JWong93966 жыл бұрын
Han, are you saying the mechanical one and the hydraulic one are not interchangeable? I have an hydraulic one but the 8mm bolt is stripped, I am thinking how to replace it with a new 8mm bolt, any idea? It was already bad when I removed the belt but it worked barely. After removing the belt, I replaced the idler pulley and now I cannot put the new belt back because the 8mm bolt is bad. Thanks.
@fjwong73376 жыл бұрын
So what did you do?
@frankcalderon16953 жыл бұрын
@@JWong9396 Did you fix your issue? What did you do?
@JWong93963 жыл бұрын
I put the belt back first then put the idler pulley back slowly. Still could not remove the 8mm bolt so I couldn’t change the tensioner. However, my car still running well on the old pulley. Still have the new 8mm bolt and new pulley sitting in a box.
