In 1970, Genesis was looking for a new drummer. It would be their fourth drummer in three years. Phil Collins, nineteen-years-old, showed up at the audition early. There were other drummers ahead of him, so he had a swim while listening to the other drummers audition. When it was finally his turn, he sat down at the drum kit with such confidence that Peter Gabriel, the singer, would say he knew right then and there that Collins was a great drummer. Collins killed the audition and would be their drummer for the next 25 years -- and would ultimately take over on lead vocals when Gabriel left the band. After a long tour in Canada, during which his marriage broke down, Phil Collins returned to an empty life. He was sad, angry, depressed and lonely. He had a home studio and put his all into writing and recording songs. This is one of the songs he wrote and recorded. Now, you oldies, like me, sit back and take a trip down memory lane. You youngsters who think you know what music is, prepare to have your socks blown off. It's 7 mins long, has a hell of a build up, 5 mins of intense, slow foreplay then POW, ORGASM. Sound up LOUD and Enjoy. The most amazing thing is that this song was recorded 40 yrs ago, in the 80's. This concert was in 2004, he was 53 yrs old.

The guy standing on the stage with his eyes closed is legendary bass guitarist, Leland Sklar. In addition to playing for Phil, Leland has worked with James Taylor, Carole King, Toto, and many other artists

Hey it's the 77 year old grandma, This is one of the greatest intros I have ever heard, the intensity of anticipation, as it grows to Phil finally starting to sing is so immense. Then he sings the song in a steady atmosphere of suspense, until he Hits the drums and everything explodes. Music is a atmosphere changer, a mood changer, and can actually cause emotions to flare up and cause a feeling of euphoria. As an intercessor I use a lot of Rock music for spiritual warfare, works great. Loved your reaction.

He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). And I think what you were referring to when you talked about the reverb and the ambience of the song was Brad Cole (the keyboardist) on the Vocoder and synthesizer--he kind of played and mimicked the words just as Phil sang them; it was a surreal effect. Truly one of the finest live performances of our lifetimes. I recommend the entire concert this came from (At Last: The First Farewell Tour) as the whole thing is fire.

Great Reaction. Really love this song, is Hard but fun on Drums. I Love Phil Collins, talented guy and great person. Another Day in Paradise is also something you should see. Phil Collins was friends with Queen, that made me happy. Also Roger could've been the Drummer for genesis, but he declined so Phil Collins took the place. If Roger wouldn't have declined this world would lack of huge history parts of Music xD. Phil Collins and Roger Taylor are my favorite Singing Drummers :D.

Phil Collins in an interview in 2006: I was angry, I was miserable, I was sad. You know, I was depressed without my family around. The lyrics were all improvised, I don’t know what it’s about. More people say to me what it’s about. I can promise you it isn’t about what you think it’s about. Because I don’t know what it’s about. There’s a lot of anger in there but I didn’t ever mean for it to be that way. It was just spontaneous lyrics so I wasn’t afraid to show my feelings. On the original demo the drums just come in. I recorded them at my house. The drums just enter, as you know drummers busy themselves. So by the time we got around to recording it I just did a fill into it. The take before would have been something different, the take after would have been something different. We just decided to keep that take. It was real luck.
