First recording of this wonderful song was in the film Roberta (1935), it was performed by actress Irene Dunne. It has been sung by many singers but the Platters’ version is one of the best. Greetings from France 🇫🇷

So good and Freddie did it justice. I think Queen members probably listen to this type of music, and form their harmonic after it.

I've come to conclusion over the years there are no coincidences, some points in life do happen for a reason and lead to a bigger picture. Respect to the Platters for bringing this immortal song to life but i can't help myself for prefering Freddie's version (just a bit), he took the song to another level, all by himself alone.

Awesome, never heard the original before. I can see why Freddie loved it! I love it too. The harmonizing may have been something Queen picked up from them? Love Freddie's version too - it seems more personal and heartfelt but that may be because of how much I know and love Freddie.

Just one more thing, regarding your experiences with Queen and Freddie coincidences/strange moments.. The same thing happens to me all the time, I turn on the radio - a Queen song is there that second, so many times I entered the shopping center and Freddie's voice would start singing from the speakers. My colleagues at the office witnessed many times that Queen started to sing on the radio the moment I walked in the room, we joke about it, as "oh, again, it can't be" 🙂 Maybe just coincidences, I like to believe they are signs, as if my love for Queen and Freddie is getting back to me. Maybe that's what you're getting too 😊

Love the original, great vocals. Try listening to some "Will young" the man should be world famous. "Leave right now" is his biggest hit, he sang "We are the Champions" with Brian and Roger at the Queens Jubilee concert, the same concert Brian played "God save the Queen" on top of Buckinham palace in front of a tv audience of around Billion people, he did not play a single dud note.

Brian said he had a lot of anxiety over that rooftop performance, a lot of what ifs...what if it rains, what if I can't hear the orchestra, what if I break a string, what if I fall off the roof? He must have breathed a big sigh of relief after he finished.

I literally heard this in my teensy ears in the womb. My parents & my grandparents loved it and played the record a LOT. When I heard Freddie sing it, omg. Seriously, every single lyric could absolutely have been written for or by him. He would have been 8 or 9 when it was released. I'm sure he heard it many times and, as he got a bit older, understood how much it felt like him inside. Can't help saying-- I think he loved being able to say 'gay' out loud, twice. Not that he didn't show his true colors to smaller audiences and then to the world in so many ways from the very beginning of Queen, but here-- it's like the closest he was able to come to actually coming out. Good man, Freddie. We heard you, we loved you, and we still do, in even greater numbers than you probably could've imagine when you left in 1991.💛

Thanks for the reaction. I love harmony's. And groups like The Platters. It just adds so much to any song or group. Queen used harmony's very effectively, even kind of came up with the delay between the voices. In terms of the name thing I doubt Mercury was his real name. And he did cover this song so it made some impact on him. You could also tell right from the start that Freddie had studied his craft probably since childhood. So who knows. Anyway thanks again, always enjoy your content.

Hap, you should know I'm a massive Queen fan bro, and of course, I love Freddie's version of this song.... But, I grew up in the late 70s/ early 80s with The Platters being played in my household often! I knew and loved this version long before Freddie covered it, and if I'm honest I still prefer this version! In fact whenever I busk this song, this is the version I replicate... Fred's version is harder because of the key change lol!
