I'm a 55 year old hard rock guitar player but, one of my favorite bands is the Platters. The beautiful harmonies. The lead singer is amazing. This era of music is my favorite. The best singers. The best songwriters. It's unmatched. I haven't even watched your reaction yet lol. I know you're going to love it. Thx for reacting to this wonderful group.

You're so right about the quality of music produced during the '50s, '60s, and '70s. I call it "the Elvis era"...because it spanned (roughly) the years The King was an active performer: 1954 - 1977.

@@andrewcoleman6349 Elvis and The Platters were almost exactly contemporaneous. The Platters began in 1952, Elvis in 1953. Both had their first release in 1954. Both released their first original in 1955. The Platters' breakout song was "Only You" in June 1955. For Elvis, it was "Heartbreak Hotel" in January 1956. Then, on September 9, 1956 Elvis made his first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show...and the world hasn't been the same ever since.

The lead singer of The Platters was Tony Williams, a tremendous voice of the pop era and then the rock and roll era. Find more of their songs, sit back and enjoy.

This was one of my mom's favorite groups from back in the day. I grew up listening to their records in her collection as a kid in the 1970s. A couple of my faves from them include "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" and "The Great Pretender". You can't go wrong with those. It was great growing up in the household that I did because of the wide variety of music that was being played on records and on the radio from my grandmother who lived with us who was born in 1907, my parents who were born in the 1927 and 1933 along with my siblings who were born in the 1950s. Being born in the late 1960s , I was exposed to just about every different genre and artist that came before me and since.

I am 82 and remember dancing with a girl in my arms when we weren't rocking. Only You, The Great Pretender, The Magic Touch, My Prayer, I'm Sorry, Heaven On Earth, Twilight Time, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, Harbor Lights, and more by the Platters were songs that got the gym floor (school dances after football and basketball games were there) filled with dancers.

Hope you do some more of them sometime ,they had so many hits . Great Pretender was a big one for them . There are so many great groups and musicians 50s 60s 70s and right up to this day . Glad you go back into the past though Jasmine .

So my grandfather was an illusionist from Mexico in the 40s and 50s. He came to the states and at one point, as the story goes, he gad the platters sleep in his house because they couldn't find a hotel that would take them. My grandfather was a great man. R.I.P. to him. Not exactly sure how true that story is but we always held it as a high regard for the compassion between minorities even back then. Much love from downey ca.

Kathy here - just found your channel. If you want to discover some "older" music, then here goes - Martha Reeves and the Vandella's - Kool and the Gang - Fontella Bass - Chubby Checker - Lou Rawls - Patsy Cline - Loretta Lynn - You will find a lot of great music from these artists. This brought back so many memories. The Platters was my father's favorite group. When my parents had parties, he would put on this album, let me stand on his feet and slow dance once song before we were put to bed. Great reaction as it evoked memories for me.

Along the same lines you should check out The Flamingos - I Only Have Eyes For You. You absolutely need to check out Nina Simone. I particularly like I Put A Spell On You. Her personal story is both sad (abused, discriminated against, bi-polar) and uplifting (classically trained pianist, singer, songwriter, civil rights activist) at the same time. She exposed her soul in everything she sang from blues to jazz to gospel to R&B to pop. Can you tell I'm a fan 😂? I enjoy your music reactions.

First, this is 1955 before Elvis. Elvis was deeply influenced by the Black musicians and artists of the 1950s. So, you can't say it's an 'Elvis style'. It's not 'Hawaiian' rhythm either. The Platters were an amazing group that crossed over between Black soul and R&B radio to White radio at a time when Jim Crow and segregation were still a problem in this country--when there was 'Black' music and 'White' music played on their respective 'Black' stations and 'White' stations. The Platters were one of the first popular groups to be played on 'White' radio. Individual artists like Nat King Cole also made the cross-over. I was in elementary school then, but I got a transistor radio for Christmas in 1955 and I listened to the 'Black' stations at night when my parents were asleep. I have been a life long fan of blues, R&B, soul, doowop, et al, ever since. The Platters have always been a favorite group of mine.

Many couples danced to this song back in "the day". I was only 6 yrs old in 1955 so I grew up with the greats of the mid 50s to the mid 70s. Even today, I prefer the "oldies but goodies" to what is played now. In fact, Jasmine you should to react to the song those Oldies but Goodies (Remind Me Of You) by Little Caesar and the Romans. Here's another oldie In The Still of The Night by Fred Parris and The Satins. This type of music was called Doo Wop. Doo Wop started by young black kids singing on their tenement steps and/or the neighborhood street corners. Throwing in the Coasters and Drifters in this Doo Wop category as well. Wikipedia has a great definition of what Doo Wop singers and music style is.

I was born in 72 and my parents were big fans of groups such as this so I learned to appreciate the groups of the 50s/60s. I think it's important that today's generation of musicians learn from the generations of yesteryear's musicians. Not taking away from today's generation by any means, but, those who aspire to be a musician/singer should be able to learn from those who have paved the way for the musicians of today. Just my worthless .02 .

I've said before if you take the 1950s and add complete equality. Take away every bit of bigotry. But still have the style, morals and music. It would be paradise. I love everything from the 40s, 50's and 60's. Don't get me wrong I still love my 90's music but older stuff is definitely my favorite.

New subscriber - really enjoy your appreciation for & sharing some older music when music seemed to be more heartfelt and "real". I highly recommend a new artist for your channel - Angelina Jordan. She is definitely an old soul in a young girl's body. In order to really appreciate her raw talent, you need to watch her black & white performance of I Put A Spell On You (which she also arranged) - at age 9. And may GOD continue to watch over & bless Angelina Jordan.

Also, listen to Ben E King and the Drifters do "Spanish Harlem" or "Stand By Me" or "This Magic Moment" or "There Goes My Baby." How about Jimmy Ruffin singing "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted." There's Roy Orbison doing "Crying" or "Running Scared" or "Only The Lonely." Do yourself a favor. You deserve it!

Jasmine, I am so proud of you seeking diversification of historical knowledge of African American success! Black music was stolen and plagiarized by many white artists who became great in the music world. Later, if Black artists were able to cut a record deal, the record producers got the major share and royalties.
