Happiness is a 1998 American black comedy film written and directed by Todd Solondz, that portrays the lives of three sisters, their families, and those around them. The film was awarded the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival for "its bold tracking of controversial contemporary themes, richly-layered subtext, and remarkable fluidity of visual style," and the cast received the National Board of Review award for best ensemble performance.

Nate! Im soo happy to see how much you loved this piece of work.... you are absolutely right - its an incredible accomplishment to be able to bring all of these difficult and strange elements together and still have these hilarious awkward moments. Please do consider covering Solondz's Welcome To The Dolls House (1995).

I plan on watching much more of Solondz's work! I can't wait to pick up a physical copy of this movie now that it is going to be available in the Criterion Collection. Thanks so much for watching the review and the comment!

I loved this movie when I saw it back in 1998. Where I come from no-one in the audience ever speaks - it's always really quiet. The only time it has ever happened was a scene in this movie where we already know that Dylan Baker's character is a paedophile. His son has asked one of his friends round to stay over and we can see Dylan Baker's character has put something in the sandwich which he gives to his friend's son in order to knock him out so he can rape him. A woman in the audience instinctively cried out 'Oh No' in a really caring compassionate voice. I can still hear her now. I think everyone in the cinema felt so drawn into the movie. I'm always surprised Dylan Baker's career didn't take off after this. I've hardly seen him in anything since. He's fantastic in this movie.

My favorite theater experiences are when I've watched a movie that is so compelling it has caused an audience member to loudly react. The best art should illicit a strong reaction. I havent stopped thinking about this movie since I watched it. Thank you for your comment!

Such a wonderful film. And one of the most jawdropping opening scenes and title introductions I've ever seen.
