Would the anime/manga have been any better if it had started with Satou first meeting Shio? Satou sees a mother abandon her child telling her daughter she's not wanted anymore before leaving her behind. Instead of moving on and minding her own business Satou takes the girl to shelter and to the first adult she feels like she could trust that could help her sort out this problem. Upon Satou seeing the owner of the residence almost immediately strangle Shio, Satou attacks in self-defense of Shio, but the blunt force trauma causes the painter to die soon after. If she does the right thing of turning herself in, it's extremely likely she'll be found guilty of murder for killing a man in his own home and the story would end there. On the flipside, since Shio is still asleep, she could just abandon Shio somewhere like her mother did making Satou's life 1000 times easier in concealing the death of the man. Instead, she chooses to keep to herself and see how she could help the girl's situation on her own since she'd be more likely to be caught with murder if she sought further help. The next few episodes naturally show how Satou and Shio start off as strangers but slowly bond over a shared experience of growing up with neglectful parents/guardians. Shio is grateful to finally have someone in her life she can look up to that she feels like cares for her and Satou just having the company of Shio helps her cope with the sudden shock of her killing someone which makes her feel incredibly isolated - almost as much as Shio was feeling before meeting Satou. Shio's happiness reassures Satou she did the right thing in taking drastic measure to protect her, and she relies heavily on Shio to numb the paranoia that is constantly eating at her. Then episode 1 comes next with some slight alterations to make for a smooth transition to the rest of the story. Would this change be for the better or worse?

I think that would be much better! Obviously it's a very different story to the one we got, but just reading through your idea I felt more intrigued than I ever was watching the show. I feel like if the story went with that angle, it would not only be much less creepy, but also a much better psychological horror. Because it, ya know, has actual psychological elements.

I want to write a story that takes a more objective view of love rather than relying on pure subjectivity. This story aims to be clear and realistic, not leading readers to believe that all the characters are in love with each other. Instead, it will openly address manipulative behaviors within relationships. The story will switch perspectives to demonstrate how one character may manipulate another, rather than providing an omniscient third-person narrative. This approach will showcase the manipulation that often occurs in abusive relationships, shedding light on how people can be deceived into believing in a twisted false version of love. The narrative begins in the third person but eventually transitions to the first person through the perspective of the main character, Sierra. Sierra grew up in a severely abusive family, with her father, James, displaying manipulative behaviors throughout his relationship with her mother, Diana. James, who was financially disadvantaged, initially deceived Diana into thinking he loved her for her wealth. However, once they married, he began physically abusing her. James derived satisfaction from hurting women and relished the feeling of power and control it gave him. Diana's perception of love became deeply distorted over time, as she struggled to differentiate between genuine love and manipulation. She failed to realize that James did not truly love her, despite the obvious signs of abuse. The story serves as a cautionary tale about abusive relationships and the capacity for manipulation to skew one's understanding of love. The narrative also explores various forms of love and examines the irony of romantic love. In Sierra's case, her friend Carly, who is white, launches a physical attack on her out of jealousy. Sierra perceives this as an act of hatred and denounces Carly as a fake friend. Carly's jealousy stems from her belief that, as a white Muslim, she should be superior to Sierra, who is black and a Christian. Carly's racism and religious superiority complex strain their friendship. Despite Sierra's ongoing arguments with Carly, she maintains the friendship due to her troubled upbringing and struggles with understanding love. Carly's presence provides a sense of security for Sierra, but the attack causes Sierra to realize Carly's true intentions, leading to a devastating betrayal. At home, Sierra's father is emotionally distant, showing more affection toward Diana. However, James's actions are merely a form of manipulation called "love bombing." He lavishes Diana with gifts, dates, and kind gestures to prevent her from leaving him and taking her wealth with her. Diana hires a male nanny named Tyrone to provide Sierra with a father figure, as James neglects his parental responsibilities. Diana eventually recognizes that James does not truly love her and that he manipulates her to maintain control. She decides to file for divorce, mainly for Sierra's sake, as James had manipulated Diana into believing she could not survive without him. Diana gathers evidence of his abuse, such as recorded threats, and wins custody of Sierra. Tyrone, despite his good intentions, remains on the sidelines due to James's threats against Diana and Sierra. Sierra maintains her friendship with Tyrone, valuing his role as a father figure in her life, but their relationship never becomes romantic. This story aims to shed light on the complexities of love, manipulation, and abusive relationships while emphasizing the importance of recognizing and breaking free from toxic dynamics, even when love is involved.

Studio Ezola (絵空) is Diomedea. They used this brand for anime they produced in cooperation with Studio Blanc (スタジオブラン), which until early 2021 was exclusively a subcontractor/cooperation company, but has produced a few titles as a main studio since then. Also, Sounan desu ka was a pretty bonkers island survival comedy. Not bad, but full of specifically gross humor, given its survival theme (though... rather educational, were you to find yourself in the same very unlikely situation). Very "manga humor", too, given that it's an adaptation.

I really wanted this show to be a subversion of the old fucked up "cute loli romance" trope. I really wanted it to show how disgusting and vile Satou truly is, and not give her any leeway. But ultimately I was disappointed by just how much it fetishized the relationship between Shio and Satou. There were elements of the show that I felt were done well, but overall I am deeply disappointed in the ways the show justified Satou's actions and went out of it's way to make her and Shio's relationship "cute" and "wholesome".

I've watched this anime like 3 years ago and its ending has been haunting me ever since. I have to admit, I was and still am a teenage boy that gets impressed by many things. But this anime's story, character relations, tension and the ending... It creates a bold and unique piece of work that is unique and doesn't look nor feel like anything else. I know Satou is a psycho who loves a little girl she kidnapped, but I accept it because it gives her a flaw. I won't say this anime has a perfect pacing or character growth. I love Satou as a character, really fun. Nothing gets me going like a good completely unapologetic immoral character, and it's doubly fun because I see a bit of myself in her. The anime is pretty low quality, I'll agree, but I think that a lot of your criticisms about the story beats are off base. Specifically: Shouko dying felt right to me, she had no way to see it coming, but we as the audience know exactly who Satou is - nothing about her death should have come to anyone's particular surprise or upset. At the end of the day, Shouko had to leave the story to set the stage for the predetermined ending, because it seems as though this story was planned out from the beginning to be a short one. I agree that a more interesting story could have potentially been told sans Shouko's death, but I also doubt that was ever an option. This series seems like it was constrained from the start by something behind the scenes.
@CakeoftheMews
@CakeoftheMews Жыл бұрын
Fair point. Realistically, I knew Shouko was going to die. But not in the "this is what the story is leading up to" kind of way and more of a "that's what happens in these sort of stories" way. I think because she was the most interesting part of the story for me is why it upset me so greatly. I also agree that Satou is a fun character, or at least her concept is interesting. In practice, I feel as if she isn't explored properly to keep that interest in her character to anyone who doesn't immediately click with her. I'm sure there was some kind of complications behind the scenes, but as for the story we ended up getting, I found it frustrating and generally not great.

Ahaha, your criticisms are well justified. I still can't help but love her though. The common ground I shared with Satou far outmatched all the concerns I had. How we view happiness. Our reaction to the choice between what touches our heart most vs someone who has been there for us. That one relative who had a few too many years in our head. And much more. I never thought it'd be a p*dobear who would show me more understanding than anyone has before or after her, and I acknowledge that it would've been better if someone else had. Perhaps Satou herself may've thought once that, on a logical level, it would be more convenient if one of the boys she was with gave her what Shio did. Like Satou though, I've no regrets :')

I feel you start to root satoru after a bit of time, like you sometimes root for cartman in South Park It's because the characters tell the story directly to you. (Satoru more), some episodes that centre in on cartman make me sometimes feel good emotions for him and even root for him. It's because i see only him on the screen and see him winning, achieving his little goal. (Its very important that its a little one like scamming someone and not a big one. Because i hate heidi. Its like a doubleo cartman that had the ability to follow through. As the PC primcipal stated "damn dude" its theclittle crines that are happy but child pedofilia is horrific for me) And why does everyone in the show hate cartman? He's a bad person. But the episode being centred around him makes me root for his cause. (Maybe it's just me, but i loved the moment scott realised the chilli was the Mr. and mrs. tennorman Chilli) And this is the same. I love the brother character, but i also kinda like sato. But she's worse. Because in South Park, everyone is kinda crazy but this girl with a bunch of other bad adults is just another example of suchlike sad inhumane exeptions. I love my parents, im 15, and i never thought i could have it in me to groom a 7-year-old. But, welp sweet sugar life, you have me in your cluches. Not because of romance, because there is none, but because i feel like i make the right choice and can still distinguish romance from pedophilia Like good from evil 1 Kings 3:1 15. I feel good i have this wisdom and can still see that sato is bad and cartman is bad, but funny.

As someone who purchased the first volume of the manga, read a good portion of it online, and watched a few episodes...I feel like the story is so lackluster And don't get me wrong, I don't think an anime has to be squeaky clean with its themes to be good. I think the reason why you disliked this anime so much is that you actually connected and sympathized with 2 characters that are pretty trash themselves. No one in this show is redeemable, except for Shio, the one true victim (until the end, that is). Asahi only sees Shio as an object needed to complete the task of being a happy family with his mom, it's pretty obvious that even if he finds her and brings her home to their mom, this won't happen. Instead of trying to find help for her mom, himself and then Shio, he just tries to get her back as if she was just a quest in a game. Shouko was only friends with Sato because she was the one who introduced her into the slutty life she lives and likes. She only wants Sato so that she doesn't feel like she is the only one sleeping around. When she is confronted with the reality that Sato has a much harsher life than herself, she understandably rejects being friends like they were before. She does care for Sato, but she cares more about herself. Instead of confronting Sato about Shio and telling her that Asahi is looking for his sister, she takes a picture and texts it to him behind her back. Sato is the worst, but like a true protagonist, she thinks that her view is the only correct one. We are not supposed to root for her, although at times we feel like she'd the good one due to others being worse. But this is why she dies at the end, her character is irredeemable. I do agree that it is not the best adaptation of the manga, it has production issues, but for being the first solo project for this studio, it's about as good as you can expect. Thanks for making this video, really liked your own production, narration and writing. Sorry that KZfaq-kun hid it from me for so long!

I definitely don’t agree with your interpretations of Asahi and Shouko. I can see where people get the idea of Asahi only wanting to find Shio for his own happiness, but at the same time I really don’t think that’s it. It’s natural for a brother to worry about his little sister. He literally did not know where Shio was or even if she was alive until the very end. Not to mention some of his behaviors feel less like character traits and more like the author just sorta wrote it that way, which isn’t exactly a quantifiable property. It’s literally just how I personally feel. As for Shouko, I straight up don’t know where you’re getting that idea. Sato was her friend she felt she could be herself around. Sleeping around isn’t really brought up after the first couple of episodes. It just seemed like she was worried. Regardless, I appreciate you watching and commenting a whole lot! And I’m glad people are still enjoying my work even if we don’t come to the same conclusions:3

I love your takes on this! I only read the manga and that was enough for me, no way I am ever going to see the anime (but I am curious). I hated Sato and the whole take of "pure true love" and how the big brother didn't get the happy ending while Sato and Shio's "love" was basically romanticised. If it wasn't for that and the story would have ended with Sato just being plain wrong while her trauma is still valid and Shio finally getting back to Asahi.... I would have liked it. But the author has some weird fetish for tragic yandere girls and ofcourse Sato NEEDS to be the tragic heroine who the poor groomed Shio worships even after her death. Ugh. This story had so much potential and it fell down on it's cute fluffy face. I honestly kinda liked it until I realised it wasn't going to be "deranged girl kidnaps a child and her brother needs to rescue her" but instead it was "a tragic yandere doesn't know what love is until she finds a sad child who looks for any validation a kid can to feel loved, oh wow! Truest love!!" So many characters to explore and use in clever ways to make the plot much more horrifying and interesting, and yet it was just a fluffy loli plot in the end.... And I only found this story because I was looking for horror manga to read which was not Junji Ito because I have already read all of that.

The difference between a character being manipulative and just "girlbossing her way out of a situation because the story said so" is within the quality of the writing. And I really don't feel like the story did enough to justify all the stuff Satou got away with. I truly don't mind little plot holes if the rest of the story makes up for it, but I didn't like the story. So those plot holes bothered me.

This anime highlights a crucial aspect of human emotions: our often complicated understanding of romantic love. While people tend to grasp the concepts of parental love and friendship quite easily, romantic love remains elusive to many. The reason behind this disparity lies in the nature of these different forms of affection. Parental love and friendship are relatively straightforward to comprehend. From early childhood, individuals experience the love of their parents and form bonds of friendship. These relationships serve as foundational experiences that help people recognize and appreciate parental love and friendship. Moreover, the intensity of parental love and the lack of complete blindness in friendship love make them easier to understand. On the other hand, romantic love typically emerges later in a person's development, often during the teenage years or adulthood. Unlike the familiarity of parental love or the clarity of friendship, romantic love can be more elusive. Individuals may have witnessed romantic love in movies or formed close bonds with others, but fully grasping the depth and complexity of this kind of love can prove challenging. Moreover, those who haven't grown up in households with healthy two-parent relationships may struggle even more to understand romantic love. A healthy example of a two-parent household can provide children with a valuable perspective on what romantic love should look like, helping them navigate this intricate form of affection as they grow older. As a Christian, I've found that the Bible contains verses that provide a profound understanding of love. In these verses, it becomes apparent that God intended for a two-parent marriage. This design is rooted in the practicality of raising children, where the responsibility is shared between two parents. This way, when one parent is at work, the other can be present at home, providing guidance and support to the children. It alleviates the burden that a single parent might face, ensuring that children are not left to fend for themselves. A two-parent household, particularly in a romantic relationship, holds significant value for children. You might question why these two individuals must be in a romantic relationship, and why marriage seems to intertwine with romance. It's possible that God intended romance to be a genuine part of human life because it is a beautiful and meaningful aspect of our existence. However, He wanted to ensure that there was a healthy portrayal of romance, especially for the sake of children. In ancient times, there were no TVs, video games, computers, or even written language to provide examples of romantic love. The primary models children had were their parents. As societies developed and people began writing and creating visual depictions of romance, these representations weren't always healthy. Unhealthy romantic relationships and cultural structures existed, and children needed better examples. Enter the idea of a loving, romantically involved parental unit. The purpose of this concept was for two parents to genuinely love each other, not just marry for convenience or financial gain. Their love for each other would be evident through their care, selflessness, and willingness to sacrifice for one another. This would create a healthy, non-toxic environment. The underlying message for children would be clear: This is what parents do, this is what romantic partners do, this is what love looks like, and this is what a healthy romantic relationship looks like. It would serve as an example for children, showing them the potential for love and demonstrating that they can aspire to have a loving spouse and enjoy the beauty of a healthy romance.

I don’t agree. Happy Sugar Life was a mess. A beautiful mess….An Imperfect Masterpiece. It was twisted, but a great anime.

Masterpiece? I think you should try consuming more media if this is your standard of a masterpiece😭😭

Dude touch grass it’s out there I promise. Watch shows of actual 3D people instead of rotting your brains on romanticized pedophilia cartoons all the time.

I did read the manga, actually, and I find it to be much better than the anime. Mainly because the art is better lol

She keeps saying when describing some of the female characters and she couldn't be more. These insane woke Modern day girl bosses are the perfect example of what girl bosses are really like.😂 The majority of them are sickeningly crazy like this.

Sorry but this video made me realize 6 things things that made me fully disagree with you 1* i loved all the characters except you who criticized them 2* your a based character irl yourself if ur favorite character was the tragic romeo and Juliette couple 3* you sound like a snorting nerd when you talk which makes it hard to take ur opinion as valid 4*👉 its anime and most anime is ment to make you escape reality not replicate reality👈 5* it's a bunch of f###ed up desire's/fantasy's that should stay in an anime which is expectable BECAUSE IT'S NOT REAL😱 6* the quality of the art of the anime was fine, ya'll just got o.c.d. and are to picky😂
