I just saw a TikTok of a girl that works in L&D and she started a jar and for every baby she helped bring into the world she put a bead, blue for boys, pink for girls, and white for babies born sleeping. I think you should start a jar so you can look back at all the babies you have helped!!!

Rachel I got into medical school!!! I’ve been watching your videos from the very beginning and they helped me through so much of the emotional roller coasters of being a pre med and applying/waiting and all that jazz. Im even more excited to follow you in your journey as an aspiring OBGYN because that is where my heart lies as well. I just wanted to give you the good news and let you know that you made a difference in my life❤️

Loved your last lil segment on inclusivity. As a queer person with vaginal/uterus/pelvic dysfunction it’s so frustrating to have everything compared to the heteronormative woman’s experience. I’m gay so there’s no chance I’m pregnant but the number of times I’ve had to really spell it out for doctors really amazes me in 2022. Glad to see the next gen of practitioners are embracing intersectionality 🏳️‍🌈

do you think it would be appropriate for a physician to ask about your sexual preference? Just wondering because having that bit of information could really change a differential diagnosis.

I say sexual&reproductive, or gynecological health! When working with gender hormone therapy, we refer to that as gender affirming care. Working at Planned Parenthood (where we have many diverse pts of all gender identities), these are all pretty standard terms to use (and the ones we were trained to use upon hiring ). Hope that helps!

I love how much you think about the feelings and perspectives of others when you talked about the best, most inclusive terminology for OB/GYN. I have met OB/GYNs who seem to treat women as human incubators and prioritize their ability to carry a fetus above who they are as a human being, and I love that you do not think that way at all. You will be a great OB/GYN!

Hi Rachel! I recently got my mcat score back after being a retaker and I'm so happy to finally apply for med school this year. Considering family medicine. Been working a lot on the ambulance and as a telemonitor technician. Thank you for your weekly videos. Take time for yourself ❤ only advice I have is to work out in the morning if you can. I notice that you seem stressed out about not going to the gym and it being too late. I find that getting the workout done early truly makes the day a whole lot better and I can get more done. I'm up at the gym as early as 5am sometimes and it honestly feels awesome but going to bed early is essential. Keep up the hard work girl!!

I LOVE that you’re talking about inclusive language in OB/GYN!! ik this video is like over a month old, im behind on youtube, but idc. my life has been crzay recently and ive been going through a lot and i also havent watched your videos in a while, so today i decided to catch up on your content and everytime i do, im reminded how much i admire you and how much comfort you and your videos bring me. i want to go into the medical field hen i graduate and i really really admire your drive, your passion, the way your eyes light up when you talk abt medicine, especially ob gyn, and when you give random med facts and explain stuff. i really really hope that some day, when i choose my specialty, i have that same drive towards it. i dont think you know how much i (and i know so many more feel the same way) admire and appreciate how real you are. i feel like a lot of people, content creators, tend to only show the good in their lifes. but thats not the case with you, you show us both sides, you talk abt mental health, youre helping break the stigma, you let us know we're not alone... and of course, we know you dont show us everything, but what you do show is worth a lot. so yeah, i just wanted to say thank you, thank you for being someone i can admire and look up to and make my days better and thank you for giving me a reaosn to stay.

Loved what you were saying at the end of the clip!! I’m a 3rd yr nursing/midwifery student and I just did a paper on PTSD surrounding childbirth. Excited to see how you tackle it because inclusiveness is a huge passion of mine too xx

Hi Rachel! I’m starting M3 with OB this month and your OB videos have made me SO excited for my first rotation!!! I love how you brought up inclusive language at the end. I think it depends on what we’re talking about and whom we’re talking to! “Reproductive health” can work if it’s relevant to pregnancy, “family planning” if you want to include abortion in the pregnancy umbrella, “sexual health” if you’re talking about anything sex-related, or even just the words “obstetrics” & “gynecology” if you have a more scientific audience! The “-ologies” and body parts themselves aren’t inherently gendered so sometimes it works to just say what you’re actually referring to (“people with vaginas”). I’ve heard OBs use “pregnant people,” “gestational parent,” “carrying parent,” and “people who can get pregnant” all in different contexts when relevant to include everyone with uteruses. I think Mama Dr. Jones has made some videos about inclusive OB language!

I love how you're taking everyone into consideration and working to be inclusive in your language. After thinking about it, I would probably suggest just saying "obstetric and gynecological health". It doesn't assume gender, reproductive status or ability, and is straight to the point. If you are a person who requires obstetric or gynecological services, you fall under that umbrella. Nice and inclusive. I'm interested to hear what you end up going with; it's a topic I haven't given as much thought to as I probably should. As always, great video! Can't wait to see what you're up to in next week's vlog!

Having a roller coaster of a day but your vlogs always make me feel better!!! Even though I’m from NZ which has only 2 medical schools within the entire country and the way our system works towards becoming a MD is a bit different, I love watching your videos and getting excited for what the possible future may include 🥰 watching your passion of OBGYN makes me tear up a little, as it’s great to see someone just enjoy something to the fullest. I… actually failed my last year of high school because of mental health related and (at the time) undiagnosed ADHD related problems. It’s only when my mum encouraged me to take a health science course after hs that I realised I truly wanted to go to medical school, but I never thought I’d be capable enough to. I got my first test result back and I got a mark of 100%!!! So I am extremely happy with that, but also extremely scared that despite this course being a course you take to get into uni that when the University sees my application for pre-med that they’ll just see my last year high school results and I won’t get in. But I will keep on trying! I hope you have a wonderful day - you deserve it! :)

in my program we use terms like 'pregnant people' 'mestruating people', 'people with uteruses', 'birthing persons' and terms like this! It felt awkward changing language at first but now it comes naturally to me and it is so important! We always use the term 'catch' babies instead of 'deliver' since that is more empowering to the birthing individual who did all the work!
@RachelSouthard
@RachelSouthard 2 жыл бұрын
Yay!! Thanks for mentioning all this!!:) Personally, I don’t like the word “catching” and probably will never use that. It sounds really chaotic and barbaric, and as if there’s no skill involved with delivering. Complete personal opinion, but yeah. 😁

Always love your videos! But to answer your question, I remember talking about this in my maternal and child’s health class. A lot of our language was addressing the current anatomy that a person has. So…“people assigned female” or even saying “person who has a cervix”. “Well-woman exams” would be “sexual health screening” or “cervical screening.” And even saying, pregnant person instead of pregnant woman. Language is important- im glad you’re paying attn to it :) wish you the best!

Great vlog! We are absolutely in a transition of how we talk about OB/gyn. More inclusive language could include things like birthing people/person, talking about systems like calling it gynecology and obstetrics instead of women's health. I'm so glad that we are thinking about how we can make sure our patients (or, for me, future patients) can feel most comfortable with our language. Mama doctor jones and Dr. Jennifer Lincoln have some good Tik toks on the subject, but I don't know if they have whole videos on the topic.

Hey Rachel! I'm on my ObGyn rotation in New Zealand at the moment, we get formal teaching about inclusive language which I think is really important. The Doctors and Midwives that take it say things like "pregnant person", "parenthood", "anyone with a cervix" during their talks. I think it's easy to copy what we hear often, practice is the best way I've found to incorporate inclusive language. There are a few papers with specific examples, but if I can't think of one in the moment I'll revert to direct "you" language ie. "you might experience cramping, it's quite common" over "most women experience cramping."

I also had planes going to ice-skating ( today was the last day of opening so yeah I've to wait until November 🤭) or gym but pharmacology today wines the battle. The third year MD is not easy omg I'm starting surgery rotation soon. Your attitude and vlogs help me survive my studies 🥰 so many times it was so hard and thanks to you and my mom 🥰I'm still studying 📖 . Greetings form POLAND 🇵🇱 ❤ GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR NEXT ROTATIONS 🤞 BTW you are my first medical/vlog channel that I've subscribed 😆🥰

Been good. Planning on doing Prerequisite classes in the Fall possibly. My goal is to someday get my MS in Genetics Counseling so I can work with families that are going through Genetics Issues. I have an AMAZING doctor that encouraged me. She also told me about it in October when I had an Appointment with her. I have to take Chem, BIochem, and Genetics.

Rachel these videos are gold. So many negative videos out on KZfaq about medical school and residency and after. It’s important that people see your enthusiasm and love for medicine. Physicians deserve to be treated with respect and be well compensated but you also are a good example of WHY medicine is the best profession. It’s the blessing and privilege to take care the sick and vulnerable. Your videos are a service to those who are in or considering medicine. I’ve been an attending for over 20 years and your videos are refreshing to me as well. I really hope that you work at a teaching hospital and get to teach residents and medical students. Things will get difficult at times. You will have patients and babies die. You will have failures. You may even be sued. But keep carrying on and let it not stop you. Maintain your humanity and love for medicine. Best of luck to you.

Hi rachel :) I’ve spent my gap year working in labor & delivery as a newborn hearing screener & I’m starting medical school this fall! I just wanted you to know that almost everyday at work I think “…do I wanna be an OB/GYN??? Or do I just wanna be Rachel Southard” 🤔 Hahahaha love your videos!

as a female presenting nonbinary person thats premed, idk it made me tear up hearing someone thinking about language and what that affect can have on inclusivity! in my day to day life, Ill say people with vaginas or people with a penis, but I know that isnt the most professional sounding phrase. I wish more folks thought about this, and id be so interested to know what language people use in OBGYN to be more inclusive.

I’m a PT and we just refer to it as pelvic health…I know it’s not the same thing as OB/GYN but maybe it could work ….? Everyone seeking your services has a pelvis so it’s very inclusive that way 🤗
