TMI but I just had a pap smear by a female practitioner and she was so nurturing I felt so comfortable, compared to my former OBGYN who didn’t say a word the entire time 😥 it makes a world of a difference having an empathetic, kind OBGYN and I’m sure you’d be the perfect example Rachel! :)

Rachel, please don’t push yourself too much to keep getting vlogs out. I LOVE your videos but I was so happy to hear that you took a break while you were busy. We see how hard you work in the vlogs but on top of that you still make time to edit the videos. We appreciate the vlogs but never be afraid to prioritize :)) we all support you more than anything.

I’m the last clip where you were describing what you do in a Pap smear reminded me of the doctor that did my first pap smear. I went a few months ago to get it done the first time and I let her know it was my first time. She did everything you were describing. She was sweet, cautious and so careful. She would describe everything she was doing as she was doing it and it made me feel a lot more comfortable and it wasn’t a bad experience. So I can just imagine how great of an experience you made it for your patient ❤️

I'm not even in the medical field but got excited when you said you used Davinci. And hello shortness of breath club. I'm pretty sure mine is because I've repeatedly had pleurisy. The why is a mystery because the last time I went to the doctor for it after ending up in the ER for it (the pain was so sudden and strong and I didn't know what it was) the doctor just said, "oh it will go away on its own" and didn't even care to try to figure out the why. Sometimes I'm out of breath just standing up and talking 😐 I see medical students like you and I have hope that more doctors will actually listen to a patient's concerns and not be dismissive.

I'll never forget at the time thinking "Nothing is worse in The world than a man Doctor telling me to turn my head and cough"....and then I heard about Pap Smears from hearing my older sister and mom "chat about it"...and I realized then what Mom always told us kids...."If you have to complain, do it under your breath as everyone has problems and MANY are worse off than you will ever be"! I experienced a different situation: the patient told me that she had a hysterectomy but she wasn't sure if it was partial or not because the doctor didn't tell her (????), but she thought she had it all removed. When I went to examine her and did the pap smear I found the cervix lol... She was so surprised (and I was so mad about the terrible communication of her previous gynaecologist)

have you ever worked with a midwife? i’ve been trying to go to nursing school to ultimately continue education and become a midwife, but so many people have been telling me to go to med school or PA school (this switch is so much easier said than done 😂 but not impossible (im a senior in college rn, so i would have to go back to school to get diff pre reqs & then take time to study for diff exams)) i just want to get a better idea of what to do & if ppl in med school have a diff opinion on midwives vs OBGYN

Hi Alejandra! I’m a Certified Nurse-Midwife! Midwifery is an incredible career and like OBGYN we provide prenatal care/labor/delivery/postpartum and GYN/well woman care/family planning. We’re independent providers in most states (meaning we can deliver babies/provide care independently in the hospital, birth center, or home) but also consult and collaborate w our OBGYN colleagues, as appropriate. I think the biggest things to consider is whether you’re interested in primarily healthy women/supporting normal birth as a midwife. Or if you’re also interested in complex cases, managing complications and, of course, doing surgery, as an OBGYN. Midwifery and obstetrics compliment each other and both are incredibly meaningful work. ☺️ Feel free to PM me w questions!

Now i am addicted to your videos like_ BENZODIAZIPINE, BARTBITURATES, ... every week i wait for your new video as like Alzheimer patient wait for drug. (HAHA)..... RESPECT FROM PAKISTAN ..

Hey Rachel, just out of curiosity: Are the third and fourth year only for rotations ? I recognized you still study a lot, but it seems like you do this all by yourself. Are there still lectures from your medical school provided? Or is there a certain curriculum which you follow ? Im not from the U.S so I’m not very familiar with your system.

Topics: IUD insertions, different types of cysts on ovaries. For me I go in for yearly check ups to get checked because I had a positive HPV pap. Anyways, I went to the ED in October for severe side pain. It ended up being kidney stones, when they did the CT scan, they also seen a huge cyst on left ovary. Which ended up being a dermoid cyst. I scheduled a surgery to get it removed. During surgery when they got to see it, there was no more ovarian tissue. They had to removed by left ovary plus a part of the Fallopian tube. I’m just a little frustrated because this was not caught during my check up, and a pelvic exam was done at the time. A pelvic exam was 4 months before the CT. The cyst ended up being 9cm by 10cm

Embarrassing yes. But I bet u will never do that again and it may have solved ur issue with locating the cervix. Those little embarrassing this happen but they r the best learning tools. Step by step communication during this embarrassing exam can put the patient completely at ease. Ur doin it right. I wish more people spoke up instead of staying silent. It would be nice to lose the stigma of a necessary exam.

Did you end up doing a vault smear instead for the patient who had a hysterectomy? As that is done in lieu of a Pap smear when no cervix is present. Vault smears should be done to track any neoplasia in the top vaginal wall.
