Set after Metroid Fusion (2002), players control bounty hunter Samus Aran as she faces a robotic enemy on the planet ZDR. It retains the side-scrolling gameplay of previous 2D Metroid games and adds stealth elements.

This game took me back to the 90s gaming. Currently I’m 42 years old, and I haven’t felt like this in a long time. When I started playing this game last night I felt like a teenager again I can’t explain it. To me it’s one of the best games ever made.

Breath of the Wild made me feel that way too. While so much the rest of the industry insists on making games less gamey, Nintendos design philosophy keeps it traditional.

@@trenken might I ask in what ways? I found Dread to be not only a more fluid game to play but a more traditional style metroid game in general, the use of the scan visor especially in S R was a bit... "cheaty"? it felt like i had x-ray visor but cranked to 11 right from the get go. while Dread saves that till you're fairly far in the game, giving you the opportunity to look for secrets yourself and get that dopamine when you succeed.

Played it for about 5 hours today and I'm very happy with it. Like you said, it's both completely new, but also feels right at home. The leveldesign is amazing, even the backtracking is done in such an efficient way. And Samus controls better than ever! It's wonderfull to finally have a brand new Metroid again after all those years!

I'm not a Metroid "fan" and have hardly played any of the other games in the series, but I still preordered this one and, WOW, such a fun game. I'm really enjoying, but you're 100% right...it is a challenge, but in a fun way. I'm looking forward to getting further in and seeing what awaits!

@Lydia I have tried to get through Super Metroid on four separate occasions over the years. It just isn't a fun game, in my opinion. It sucks because I have always WANTED to like it, but every time I play it, it's just a bore to keep retracing my steps over and over again. To me, it is by far the most overrated Super Nintendo game.

@@Fast_Travel_Gamer It's definitely not overrated lol some people get it and some people just don't. It's simply not for everyone but the small few who have played and actually completed it generally understand why it's a masterpiece. Greatest game ever made as far as I'm concerned.

Question does it have that exploring feel to it? Like which block is breakable. Because super metriod was my favorite game to. That was my favorite part of it finding secret path ways.

@@Whoareyoupeople900 This game is an evolution of many of the concepts set up in fusion. If you like dread it’s an easy recommendation. Also what if I told you there was a game in the series that was interesting and foreboding on a causal playthrough, but has masterful map design that allows skilled player to outsmart the developers and bend the game to their will, collecting items and fight bosses in almost any order they please, as long as the player is skilled enough. If any of that masterful game design interests you, I recommend you check what is my and many others favorite game of all time, Super Metroid

I’ve got to say I wasn’t hyped at all about the game. I bought it as an impulse buy and boy is this game fun so far! It really reminds me of the good old days. It’s beautiful to behold. Love it!

@@westibbs it really isnt hard to pump out 8 straight hours into this game lol. Id say he is close to finishing it after 8 hours. This was my first metroid and i clocked 11:15:58. Loved every second of it.

I’m absolutley in love with this game. It feels like it’s a mix between retro and modern styles of gameplay. The music, the atmosphere, the controls, everything is just so immersive and stunning. I just love it.

I wish I could have gotten the Special Edition + Amiibo's. This game is 100% worth the extra $. Good for you!! Hoping I can find the Amiibo set in the wild. Hopefully like Zelda SS they do a 2nd Amiibo run. I preordered the standard copy from Gamestop with free pins. Seriously thinking of buying the SE from Ebay while its still semi- reasonable. This game is absolutely worth it even having to line some POS scalpers pockets. Oh well....

I missed out on the pre-order and went into GameStop to pick up my preorder for just the standard game and the guy said the company shipped him a few extra special editions. They were sitting on the counter. He’s like “you want one? We can upgrade?” Yeah, It was just dumb luck. I never get that lucky lol! I hope you find yours!!

I had no expectations for this game and I've been playing it for hours, it's an incredible experience so far. I played Super Metroid, Metroid Fusión and a little bit of Zero Mission this one may be on the same level as super Metroid.

For me this game is amazing, I’m a relatively new fan to the series but I played through all of Metroid, SM, and Fusion, about a year back, the pacing is super good as well as the flow between combat and navigation (something that’s improved with each new entry)

@@BryanX64 yea, im not too far yet. The graphics are nice but I kind of miss the 2d art style in Fusion. The gameplay is pretty much the same as Samus returns on the 3ds with the parry mechanic making a return as well as the free aim. To be fair though I wasn't too fond of Resident evil 4 on my 1st run now it's one of my favorite games.

As a massive fan of difficult survival horror games.. I never knew that type of gameplay is what Metroid needed, but it’s a match made in heaven. If the whole game stays this good or gets better this is the best Metroid game ever. Not sure if that’s true yet, but this could take the crown from Super.

I am loving this game. It's my first Metroid game. I am dying alot but I'm learning. Graphics and story are awesome. Love to see you and Rob stream this game just to see your reactions. I'm on the edge but in a good way. Laughing at my jumping skills.

If you dont die a lot in this game on your first run your a godsend. This game is brutal but fun. Once you figure out the patterns of the enemies its pretty fair but still difficult, reminds me of a souls game. Dieing is apart of the fun lol.

The EMMI zones give me a Dark Aether vibe. So far I'm having a blast with this game just started the second map. One area that is still an issue for me is the free aim controls, they just feel a bit unwieldy.

The best thing i can recommend is finding a controller that fits your hand style, i use an 8Bitdo pro2 controller so the control stick layout is similar to playstation.

I just beat a certain boss and got the dash ability. So far this is not only my GOTY for 2021, but easily in my top 5 switch games, especially as someone who has played every other 2D Metroid since the 80s. It's impressive that not only does it hold up against the other 4 mainline Metroid games, but that it stands out in a crowded genre.

i was worried the emmi's would stress me out too much as i was all about the exploration and upgrades but it feels so satisfying to clear an area of its emmi and it makes exploring that area rewarding after.

@@ESPirits87 if i remember correctly one of the metroid dread reports had explained that samus's suit was self repairing/regenerating back its original form(before the x parasite incident in fusion), i don't know if this will get changed in a future metroid game but thats how it was said.

I love this game so far! Honestly giving Fusion vibes with the EMMI. 2D Metroid is always the preferred one for me. I will get Prime 4 but this was the game I wanted most :D

I wish there was an option for right stick aiming. And different control options. Like I keep going down to D Pad to run, but its unused minus 1 button making map temporarily bigger. So different controller options would be appreciated. Besides that a 10/10 experience.

Great game so far, I think I'm nearing the end. Only gripes I have with it is the lack of great music and the difficulty is a little on the higher side for a Metroid game.

Love it so far, played for 6 hours straight and stopped only because had to go to sleep. But I wish the vision wasn't so obscured in emmi zones because sometimes when you are running away the platforms blend with the background and have a hard time seeing what's where.

It’s cool and her suits are awesome and seeing her move is Samus and Metroid and why I think prime series should have a 3rd person implemented and build up really good for exploring and switch between 1st and 3rd and yes it could be done in awesome way

Absolutely love this. The visuals, music, atmosphere, world building, movement, action, suspense, intense, story.. so so good I have my copy, even though standard edition, it is a marvel, I love it The amount of details, from Samus's visor, to the world, and atmosphere constantly shifting. Btw nice you noticed the nods to Prime as well. Gameplay run with Rob?! Cannot wait!!

I have 2 hours in and so far your right, it is exactly like coming home. If, when you got home, there was a giant chandelier in yours 550 sqft apartment and a bottle of 2004 Tuscan Brunello that had been decanted for 45 minutes.

Retro Metriod gamer here. I was looking for that modern day retro feel and this is TOTALLY IT! The title is perfect...Dread. Those EMMI's are total Dread in a perfect way!

So far, I've played it for two hours now and can't put it down. What a stellar game with equally stellar graphics and control. I love the block features! Oh awesome I spoke too son, but YRS ROBMAN is gonna join, sweet!

This is my very first ever metroid game and so far I love the game. It can be a bit frustrating at first but once you start unlocking things then it feels soo rewarding!

I played up until the second area last night and this game rules. Fusion was my entry point to the series - I was 12 at the time - and I loved how that game so effectively used atmosphere and mood. The EMMI are basically the SA-X, but more frequent and more unpredictable. I love it, and I don’t think there’s another metroidvania that does what Dread does. The Queen is back!

The fluid movement really is good. First game to do that since Strider (2014) to feel so fluid. Absolutely love this game. The 19ys wait has been worth it!

I am loving seeing a Metroid planet realized in 3D. I’ve never played the Prime games, but I am a huge fan of the 2D games. This is like truly bringing these characters to life! Samus is such a badass. I am overwhelmed with feelings of awe and admiration for the series, the creators, the characters and this incredible experience that Nintendo has created! I will need to reevaluate again when I finish the game and come down off of cloud nine, but I’m in no hurry.

I really want to love it, and really I do, but those EMMI sections drive me nuts. I was always horrible at this kind of aggressively chasing enemy like Mr. X. I feel it keeps me from fully enjoying the exploration aspect. That said, the animation is crazy awesome and beautifully fluid, even in handheld mode. Also, where's the OST? Where's a Brinstar or a Torvus bog? Even though it's far from my favorite Metroid, it's still a great game and deserves the praise and attention.

Keep with it! I typically hate the chase enemy kind of mechanics too but you do eventually find a way to destroy them. Don’t give up!

@@BloodyFinger1661630 Thanks, dude. Finally got past the second EMMI... this little nifty familiar thing it gives you will make traversal so much easier. I still don't like the EMMI sections but admittedly, the game's awesome. I just miss a good score. That ambient music is way too muted. I'd like to have something like Brinstar that made you want to come back to that area just for the music, lol.

I picked it up last night and played for a while. I love the graphics and the controls technically it's a great game so far. However, unlike other Metroid games this one is really hard right from the start.
