Harakiri is one of my favourite films of all time! I hear many people go into it expecting a samurai movie and what they end up with is an anti-samurai movie! Beautiful B&W photography in this too. The shots of them walking through the graveyard and the fields towards the end are etched into my memory. Great review, my friend!

Thanks, Elliot, it was one of those films that really justifies being a collector. Buying films adding them to the collection and not watching them has been something I've been struggling with. Have I been wasting money on things I'll never get to or have I built up a wonderful collection of masterpieces waiting to be discovered? Harakiri leads me to validate my collection as it is such a beautiful and engaging masterpiece that makes me excited to watch more of my collection. Harakiri was so wonderful and surprising. Stunning imagery and a tale that fully engages. It made me question my preconceptions and think about how I treat other people. Always be aware you never know the full story. When a film can make me reassess my actions while entertaining me, that is something special.

Omg!!! This is such an amazing film. Its a beautifully told tale. I've just this moment finished watching it. This has had such a profound affect on me. It sounds a bit corny but some films affect you on a more spiritual way and this is one of those film. The acting is impeccable as is the Cinematography. I was emotionally attached to these characters so actually shed a tear as kingo and his mother dying. AMAZING Thankyou for putting me on to this

Hi Graham, hope you're well. I watched this this morning and I can't get it out of my head. I've watched 2 movies since but this keeps lurking into my thougths. I went on the trusty KZfaq to find other people's opinions and was delighted to see you there and holding it in equally high esteem. This movie is beautiful and moving all at once and arguably one of the finest performances I've ever seen. Who knew a man on a mat could be so captivating. I'm now going to delve back onto the Eureka website and get me some more Kobayashi. Cheers Graham, your channel comes up trumps once again.

Hey Roy. What a film! I think this is my favourite MOC. I literally had no idea where it would/could go! But it is absolutely captivating! So glad you loved it as well.

Such a powerful film, from the story, to the cinematography, to the director, and finally to the great actor Tatsuya Nakadai. The Kobayashi - Nakadai team made some of the greats of Japanese cinema. These two made seven films together (nine if you count The Human Condition as three films). I got to see the restored The Human Condition (all nine hours) on the big screen at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, NY with Tatsuya Nakadai in attendance (for all three movies over two days). Nakadai is funny, insightful, generous, and even threw in a little shade at Mifune, all in jest of course. With us all hunkered down, with time on our hands, I can not recommend more highly taking in all nine hours of The Human Condition and watch how a great director guides his actor not only through this character's evolution but more importantly the evolution of a great actor over the course of these three movies.

Nice review. Like you I had this one for a while before being pushed gently towards watching by others. Its stunning. So brutal and accumulating the horror note by note until your jaw is on the floor. My review is up somewhere on my channel. After Kwaidan (which is also amazing) there is always The Human Condition by the same durector. Its only 9 1/2 hours long and a masterpiece.

This is an awesome movie, my dad actually recommended this to me some years back and I'm glad he did. Kwaidan is also great and make sure to also watch his Human Condition trilogy which is an epic undertaking, but during this lockdown it's not terrible to have about 10 hours to spare to watch that.

Hi Erwan. I have the Human Condition sitting in the collection but I’ve heard it is pretty bleak so not sure if I want that emotional rollercoaster just yet. Kwaidan is something I’ve wanted to see for the longest while, can’t wait to watch it!

I hate spoilers. I’m a film fan and I want people to watch something like this and experience it for themselves. Plus this is an absolute masterpiece of a film, spoiling it is just not on.
