Wow. I sounded out of breath during the entire video! Holy Cow! Hmmm... maybe I need to get another one of these hatchets and show the modification process and then repeat the overview, now that I'm better at doing videos and have some better equipment... What do YOU think?

I bought one a few months back for around $20.00. It paid for itself immediately. I dismantled a porch at my dad's house. When I got home, I dismantled two old couches I had lying out in my yard. With a two-pound head, it made short work out of the items listed. It is worth every penny spent.

Other than removing the spike (which I'd keep for hooking on and dragging logs and the such) I love the modifications! I'd never think of adding inch marks on the handle but it was a great idea

The mods turned out pretty sweet. The after look is Hultafors/Wetterlings or other Swedish style. Now it looks like a cool, old school bushcraft hand axe. I stop in the Harbor Freight in Canton every so often, but I've never noticed this fireman's hatchet. I'll have to keep my eyes open the next time.

Although the axe looks better modified, i would have sharpened the spike and left it on. It would come in handy for dragging logs around (like a picaroon?).

You can’t get rid of the spike! That makes it a fireman’s axe! That and some red paint. Which makes me wonder if Cerakote could be used? Dude, great looking axe, but I feel cheated not watching how you did that. That mirror edge was worthy of Krom. Again, amazing, and great job.

That’s the problem with Harbor Freight. You never know what you are going to get at any given point. I have a splitting axe that I sharpened and it is one of my favorites, I have a small boys Forrest type axe and it cant hold an edge at all. A fine file takes of more material than a grinding wheel. Same store, same Chinese Harbor Freight manufacturer, absolutely no consistency, looks like you picked the good one out of the pile.

Careful using that axe, just the right length that a mistrike will go right into your shin! Its got good weight too so yeah a glancing blow with that kinda momentum is gonna be hard to stop and might just pass right through a shin bone lol. Looks great though!

I went the other way with the spike and sharpened it too. It's been good for dragging rounds or moving pcs around. Yours looks like a genuine hickory handle, the one I got was some sort of Asian hardwood or something, very strange grain and it had a roll pin installed. It is loose now after some splitting and chopping. Think I am going to re-hang it eventually on a quality handle and do away with the roll pin. That head design is great for splitting. The bluing with super glue thing is interesting, i'll have to look in to that. Thanks for the vid!

thanks for the reply, i mis-heard you on the super Blue, my bad. thanks for the clarification, and the link. I've been in contact with a couple of aftermarket handle manufacturers, the eye on that thing is an odd size, nobody has a pre-made handle for it. looks like either make my own, or order one special that does not have the eye-end formed and do that part myself.

Removing the spike runed the balance and lessened the weight.....
@BudgetGunsandGearReviews
@BudgetGunsandGearReviews 6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say it "ruined" the balance, though it absolutely shifted it and certainly removed some weight. FOR ME, the thing works well. I think that's what modifying gear is about- taking something that works ok and making it into something that better suits your own needs and works better for you. Thanks for watching, and thanks for your observation!

Cool video👍 thanks for sharing. At first I was like, if you didn’t want the pick then why didn’t you just get the hatchet? But after seeing what you did to it I noticed it has a larger cutting edge and it is a few inches longer than the hatchet, plus this video is 5 years old and they might not have had the hatchet. Anyway did you end up making the video of your modifications?

Dude, Why not leave it original? I get that you "saw" it in its final form, but it was manufactured as a fireman's axe (small) did it not have any use as such? Did you make something out of the spare steel?
@BudgetGunsandGearReviews
@BudgetGunsandGearReviews 7 жыл бұрын

That is a GREAT question! It isn't high-dollar steel for sure, but it doesn't do too bad. It's pretty easy to sharpen again, too. Remember, it's a Harbor Freight hatchet, not a Wetterlings or a Hults-Bruks. If you keep realistic expectations you won't be disappointed.
