I have never ever commented on a video but I feel for this video I really have to! I was in my shop at work today and could not get a boring tool off a mini metal lathe spindle. I was smashing the boring tool for the better part of an hour before I thought to check KZfaq and came across your video. I put the spindle into a vice and used a pipe wrench like you showed, one turn and the boring tool was off. I am very grateful -- Thank-you sir!

Awesome video, was about to buy the littlemachineshop but the deflection on the HF chuck was only 5 thousandths. The chunkyness is annoying still. I think the tap and rotating the chuck really helped with deflection. Maybe I got lucky. Major issue was squaring front and back, added a shim I sacrificed from feeler gauge. Thanks!
@JoediyLab Жыл бұрын
I had the same issue with mine, also had to waste a few feeler gauges.
@felixf52114 жыл бұрын
You'd get a more accurate measurement is you rotated the rear pulley, in lieu of turning the chuck with your hand. Don't tap the jaws of the chuck. Bad idea. You may want to indicate the arbor, then the chuck, and install it as to counteract the runout in the press. I'm pretty sure the HFT machine includes a drift, so rotating the arbor in the quill (2 positions) - if you have to - is not a problem. Good luck.

Can you go with a keyless chuck and make it bigger for quick easy use.I have one with a useless stripped key thats unusable and I’ll be using it a lot starting this spring?just 5/8’s,to make it bigger and easier to grab and loosen and tighten and thanks for being good enough to share this info
@JoediyLab2 жыл бұрын
Sure, try it, but that drill press is very small, the extra torque with the larger chuck might cause the drill press to move around, Try bolting the drill press down. Watch for twisting.

What a great video! Thank you. I was looking to buy a press that’s missing the chuck and now I know it’s possible to upgrade the press with a new and even better chuck. I live in SoCali near Pasadena can you share the shop info that you bought your chuck from?

good lesson on the chuck replacement. I have the 10" 12 speed version of the Central Machinery bench press but the belts that came with it ( I bought it at a small business closing sale) don't fit the machine. It's a 3 pulley machine and the central connecting pulley has no resistance on it and can swivel about it's post freely. I guess I expected it to have some restraint on it to keep it taunt but that does not appear to be the case. I measured the 2 pulleys in a detent position for the best accuracy using a string on the lowest speed gear setting for drilling some metal pieces and the 2 lengths were barely 2/16ths difference in length. That leads me to believe perhaps the intent is they are supposed to be exactly the same. These machines have very low specs for accuracy in the build so anything is possible. Can you tell me if there is a reliable belt replacement for these machines? Thanks. It's a real cheapy but it spins and all I want is some simple holes drill for a forge burner.
@JoediyLab3 жыл бұрын
I could not find any, My next step is to check the auto parts stores for belts or Mcmaster-Carr. Thanks for the question

@@JoediyLab thanks. I'm not one to give up on a repairable tool but,,,, Central Machinery seems best suited to become an ugly paper weight or mail box art.
@JoediyLab3 жыл бұрын
@@mark-ze4en yes Mark, in many cases you are correct. I could not find a belt for my first drill press, so I purchased another. Might not be the best way, but still was cheaper than a better drill press. I may regret my decision, as I am getting tired of garage tools as well. I started purchasing Husky and Kobalt tools. Even Ryobi are not that bad

Is it possible to install a chuck that will accept larger diameters? I have thus model be work like to have it open larger diameters.Thanks for any help you can provide.
@JoediyLab9 ай бұрын
As long as your taper matches the chuck adapter you should be ok. Check the tapper on your HF drill press, HF sometimes uses different chuck tapers. Also do not go too large as the chuck spindle on HF drill presses are quite cheap. Good Luck
@Kadensi223 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe, I have a 3/4 inch MT2 chuck. Would that fit this press? And if not, can you advise anything comparable that would accept that chuck? Thanks in advance.
@JoediyLab3 жыл бұрын
Hey G RL, There is an adapter that will convert a MT2 check to a J33 taper. But pull your check on the HF drill and make sure your Drill press is a J33. HF changes the spindle taper a lot.
@JoediyLab3 жыл бұрын
Do a search on Amazon for a MT2 to J33 adapter

@JoediyLab3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, I have never tried, but If you can find a 5/8" chuck with a J33 taper it should work. Also check your drill press, Sometime HF ships Drill Presses with different tapers. Thanks for the great question.

Is there anyway to also replace the spindle in this model? The spindle in mine is also running out of true. Thanks,
@JoediyLab Жыл бұрын
That would be tough, Contact Harbor Freight and see if they will replace the unit for you. If you are within the warranty period they usually will without question.
@drums5434 Жыл бұрын
@@JoediyLab I actually was able to remove the spindle today. After I saw the length of it I knew there was nothing available online to replace it with. When I reinstalled it I was surprised that it ran much truer than it originally did. Although it was out of warranty customer service at Harbor Freight was no help whatsoever. I doubt if I’ll buy any major tools there again from this experience. I’ve been checking out a new bandsaw and Bauer table sander at Harbor Freight and after this episode there’s no way I’ll be buying them. Thanks,

@JoediyLab5 ай бұрын
Remove the chuck, make sure both the female and male surfaces are clean and re-install. If still a wobble, get yourself a new chuck or exchange to a new one at HF. HF uses different tapers so make sure you get a chuck with the correct taper

I just bought a brand new drill press which is probably a clone of a Harbor Freight. First hole I drilled in steel didn't impress me at all (LOTS of runout). You can SEE the drill bit isn't true as it spins. I'm going to try tapping the chuck from a few different positions as you did. If that doesn't do much, I'm going to swap it out for a better chuck, seeing as they're not too expensive. I realize it's a pretty cheap drill press but it can't be THIS bad. Of course, The return policy allows me to bring it back if I'm not happy, so there's that...
@JoediyLab3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback Rob, Yes make sure the taper is clean,, Also many of the clone drill presses use different chuck tapers. Make sure you check before you purchase a new chuck
