Good Video! Even though it's a bit dated (the "store brand" the saw sells under is no longer "Chicago Electric" -- it is now "Portland"), you still provided great info! Here's a couple of things to consider: 1. Don't tie your cords in a knot. With this saw (and its successor) that is not necessary. The strange little "hook" inside of the hand guard is sized to snap around most 12 gauge extension cords. Do that and the extension cord will be anchored to the saw, then swing the pigtail cord around and plug it into the extension cord. That works really well -- no need to damage your cord by tying it in a knot, then pulling on it! 2. This is a good saw that can be made into a GREAT saw by installing a longer bar and chain. At least with the newer version, there is plenty of torque to pull the chain. I put a 12-inch bar and chain on mine (same gauge and pitch) and it works like a champ! Do I now cut larger branches and logs? Well that happens very seldom. What does happen is that I can now reach those branches that were impossible with the shorter blade. I don't just mean because I have another 4 inches of bar -- that helps, but the head on this saw is bulky and doesn't work terribly well for reaching between two branches to cut a third. Well, with the longer blade, the bulk of the head is no longer a major factor because I don't need to get it as close to the branch in question to make the cut. Oh, and I have cut full length on the 12-inch bar -- through a large and hard maple branch. The saw had NO problems!

Great comment and added info - Thanks. To add, Tony did not detail on which direction the chain should be facing, nor did he mention tension - He just tightened as far as he could go. an over tightened chain is as bad as a lose one - will wear down and eventually burn out the motor...

Works well, the higher the branches the more cumbersome it becomes. kzfaq.infoUgkxHMc_g3gGUpXsBlcRniL7qDnlxwo192gi It’s very top heavy. Better have some spare batteries near by. Worked very well for the job I had

This saw's chain/bar oil reservoir holds 110 milliliters of oil, which is 3.7 fluid ounces (slightly less than 1/2 cup). Considering how small the oil filler port is (and thus difficult to observe what's happening while refilling it), and how little the reservoir holds, I found it useful to have a plastic 1/2-cup kitchen measuring cup on hand to simplify the process by premeasuring out that amount, knowing it's the maximum amount the saw can accept. I owned one of these saws, and was impressed with its performance, but eventually had to scrap it when the chain oil system suffered a dramatic leak. I see that some other owners complain about oil leaks as well, and many complain that it leaks while not in use; I suggest draining the oil before storing it for any length of time. In the video, the need to grease the sprocket at the tip of the bar is not mentioned. It is crucial to have an appropriate grease gun available to grease the sprocket, and to do it whenever you refill the oil reservoir. (That's a good rule of thumb for any chain saw.) Another common complaint is that Harbor Freight doesn't sell replacement chains and bars. I bent the bar on mine (my fault; a poorly planned cut), and found replacements made by Oregon: the Oregon replacement chain's part number is S33; the Oregon replacement bar's part number is 080SDEA041.

The knot in the cord is stupid as F$$K. The hole in the back in the handle enables you to shove in a loop of the extension cord and hook it, THEN plug in the saw. The instructions would have taught this dork how to do that. The way he did it allows direct strain on the saw's power cord. Use the hole and hook and you completely prevent cord damage.

@@yordya3210 - did you put the chain on correctly and is it in the groove of the bar? If not sure, watch this video from 2:10-2:30 which details the installation of the chain. If you fail to do that, you will not get much if any cutting to take place. I am guessing you put the chain on backwards and if so, you will not be operating the saw as intended. Otherwise, if you have followed the directions and there is chain oil in the unit and you are still not getting the saw to cut, then call Harbor Freight customer support at 800-444-3353. That number is Pacific Standard Time. Have the model and maybe even serial number handy.

Grease the Bar Sprocket: The video neglected to mention this, but it is in the manual. The grease gun requires a special metal cone-shaped tip, which is not common for most machinery, but is common for chainsaw bar sprockets. Around here, Harbor Freight doesn't have them, but Lowe's usually stocks Oregon part number 26365. (Read the instructions. It won't work until you purge the air first.) Clean any residual junk out of the little lube holes on each side of the bar with a toothbrush before greasing. Stop when you will see the grease come out by the chain. (usually one squirt) They recommend lubricating the sprocket every 10 uses. Closely monitor the oil level: Start with a full reservoir because it goes through oil pretty quickly, and the reservoir is small. If you believe you won't go through the oil in hours worth of trimming, you will be wrong. You'll need a small funnel and it will accept oil slowly. Bar oil is usually cheaper than motor oil. If you happen to have a TSC store close by, their prices are hard to beat. Otherwise a quart of STP 30W non-detergent is $3.99 at Autozone. Unlike an engine, oil is a one-way trip with a chainsaw, so how well the oil handles contaminates and heat over time is not relevant. Other: I noticed some posts where people substitute transmission fluid. These are my thoughts. With modern engines without graphite seals, the seals are not the issue when you run transmission fluid in an engine. The major difference is in the fluid design requirements. A transmission relies on friction for clutch packs to operate as intended, which in turn are designed to wear and compensate. Most of the rest is roller or ball bearings, or pressurized lubrication across sleeves. The reason we use transmission fluid with engines in the lab is they wear much faster without other ill effects, which makes research more efficient. An engine has rings sliding on cylinders, and other sliding components. There is no downside for eliminating friction in an engine. The lubrication requirements of a chain sliding in a groove on a chainsaw are more like internal combustion engine requirements than transmission requirements. Additionally, the red dye in the transmission fluid might stain the oil reservoir sight glass.

I have used canola oil for bar oil many years and it works very well. And it doesn't get too thick in the winter under cold temps.
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 4 жыл бұрын
DO NOT use engine oil, that's how you destroy your bar & chain. engine oil just gets thrown all over and doesn't stick to the bar and chain like actual bar & chain oil does, which is why its called bar and chain oil. Use the proper oil and this saw will last a long time. I cut down 3/4 of my walnut tree with my pole saw last fall, that is a very hard wood to cut when its dead and dry, I went through a lot of bar and chain oil, and my chain is still sharp.
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 4 жыл бұрын
@@rockinghorselivestock2491 Bar & Chain oil works just fine in these saws regardless of temperature. Canola oil gels up in cold temperatures which is why it doesn't work, it also doesn't stick to the bar and chain as well either which causes excessive heat, and wear of the bar and chain...use bar and chain oil like its supposed to be used and you won't have any problems.

I purchased one of these and used it to chop down sumac trees and two feld trees in my front yard. I like because its easy to use and runs quiet. As for adding oil, I tilt the head at an angle because there are two areas where the oil flows into the reservoir. If you tilt it the oil goes in one side and the air comes out the other. Also I use a large syringe. I think it's 50 cc. Fill it with oil and it dispenses easily and slowly into the reservoir. Very Good Video.

This is a great instructions !!!! Its a great Chainsaw, but of all videos & instructions fail to mention how to replace chainsaw chain. Its the Oregon S33. Lowes/Home Depot has them. Found out by calling Harbor Freight phone rep. But here how to measure for the correct chain size: #1 measure bar from front of chainsaw to the tip of the bar/chain (for this chainsaw is 8'') #2 measure the pitch by measuring three consecutive rivets on chain and dividing that by 2. On this saw its 3/4 divided by 2= 3/8 this is the pitch. #3 is the Gauge of the bar, its the channel on the bar that chain travels thru. With chain off the bar stick a penny, dime, or quarter in the channel (clean it first) do not force it in. If its a quarter it is .063 Gauge, a penny its .058 Gauge, a dime its .050 Gauge, for this saw its.050 Gauge. #4 check the number links on the old chain, for this saw its 33 drive links. Armed with that info you will be able to find your new chain to any chainsaw !!!!

Bought today & it worked great. Well worth it: I'm new at this & immediately felt this is much safer than standing on a ladder with a regular chain saw (duh :) Instructions say soak the chain in oil (but why overnight?) I soaked it briefly, which made assembly messy but it ran well. May I suggest comparing saw weight; while this saw worked well, it would be more comfortable to hold one that's lighter, &/or, as someone mentioned below, has the motor in the back end. Consider spending more for that.

The biggest problem with pole saws is that most have the motor on the same end as the chain which makes them really heavy and hard to use. The better ones have the motor on the end where the handle is and power is transmitted through a shaft or cable in the pole to the bar and chain.

Oregon chain is what it comes with so if its not staying sharp check what you are cutting, and make sure you are using actual bar and chain oil, not regular 30 weight as it doesn't stick to the chain/bar. As far as using a longer bar, I wouldn't recommend it, the gear train is plastic. I'm sure if you cross referenced the current bar size and pitch you could certainly find a longer bar that would work, but given the gear train being plastic I wouldn't want to try it.

To the guy who posted about HF not honoring the guarantee because there was no lube on the chain bar. ... It pays to read the instructions ... They clearly tell you you must use a lube oil and they also show where to put the oil ( for Real mooks )

I went through three of these saws in two weeks. The first two had non-functioning oilers. The last one just burned up as soon as I pulled the trigger the first time.

+mpslabman1 I've seen two other KZfaqrs whose HF chain saws failed to oil. But I have a slightly bigger problem with the design. The chain bar is in a straight line with the handle. That's why I didn't buy one. I bought one where the bar (and chain) are at about 20 deg tiled down so that when I cut, I'm cutting from the top side of the branch - helps to keep the bar from being pinched as the tree branch starts to bend down before you can cut all the way through. You'd almost need another chain saw to free up the pinched one.

Hey Tony, price aside, would you rather use a jaw saw?

I bought one, got it out of box and when I saw the instruction for the tension pin, there was no tension pin and there was no tension screw with it. I called the 800 number and they tell me they don't have the parts. Can it still be used? i

D. E. Hewlett1 second agoI have watched several videos on this pole saw. No one has shown the inside of the cover. Where does the rubber seal go. It fell out when I took the cover off and diagram doesn't help to show where is goes. Can anybody help? Thanks, Dan

+mike97525 very tiny oil pump. There is a repair video floating around that shows the internals and the repair of the pump.
