A satisfyingly precise repair - at one point, whilst you were soldering the wire links onto the PCB I found myself blowing at the screen to cool down the solder! Thanks for your efforts and the handy tip regarding flattening the wire before soldering and using dissection needles.

Thanks for the diode part number smbj12a-tr. I found two mail order sources at .38c plus 5 bucks shipping. I violated the first rule. Got a backup 1TB drive in a couple of years ago and just put the sealed static bag on the shelf. Now that I need to use it, it is deader than a mackerel. Does not spin up. So, I will take a look at the pcb and see if the diode is shorted out. I have long since forgotten which seller on Amazon pawned off a dead drive in a bag. So, I will have to take the lumps and hope it can be glossed over.To see if there was someone with a local supply of bits and pieces to fill the gap now that Radio Shack is dusty history.Just to be complete the drive is a Samsung HD103SJ P/N:A7053-C541-A1S73 And again, I forgot which Amazon seller sent this as a new drive in a sealed static bag. I put it on a shelf and forgot about it. Thanks for the tips.

I agree, a diode like this takes 5 seconds to replace. But not everyone knows how to do it, or has the appropriate equipment etc, so I take my time so that others can see clearly what's happening. If I'd used my Metcal hot air station that diode would have been off 1 second :) Drive would not spin up with TVS diode failed. Drives were dead originally before I got them. This diode can be checked with a simple multimeter diode test (I normally lift a leg for testing) Diode failure may have been caused by drive being removed whilst plugged in, OR due to screw damage on main PCB.

Or poor air circulation and heat build up due to faulty design. A video card with a large heat dissipate-or can raise the internal temperature of isolated parts to well over 150 degrees Fahrenheit. My chinese built power supply melted in 2018 due to this issue.

Smashing recovery ;-D Those small tracks can be a bloody pain, but im just an antex 17 watt man, and a jewlers x10 eye peice lol :-D I did spoil myself with a small reel of solder braid, ooow that made special jobs so so much easyer, instant solder vanish, loverly lol. Meths is good enough for my bodging, and conformal coating ......hmm nail varnish would do. I did do a simple repair on a ssd drive, the owner was rough with the sata/pwr connector and it stopped working, when i removed the pcb the connector just rattled around with no actual connection to the pcb (i wonder why it didnt work :-D ). Pins and pads cleanup with fresh solder, plop the socket on and heat each pin, oops solder bridge... ahh solder wick. Back together and all is happyness, but i was disgusted by the lack of socket support, just the solder only.
@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 7 жыл бұрын
Hi zx.. Good to see you :) Nothing wrong with the Antex irons.. I used one of those for ages, in fact I still have it somewhere for emergencies. It came in handy too when my Pace pcb blew an inductor.. Or rather I made my Pace pcb blow an inductor :) Yes it seems weird sometimes at the lack of thought that goes into pcb mountings.. Relying on the joints alone is not good at all especially on a device that will no doubt be moved around, & in some cases regularly like @ LAN events etc. Cheers mate John

Honestly i dont know, this was a loooooong time ago so they must have improved there products (if it is the same company), old pace satalite boxes blew up, every one did, usually when someome unplugged it when they went on holiday, and when they got back they plugged it in and "BANG!!" LOL. I had nightmares about them LOL :-D. A "Repair kit" was the fix (most of the time), you had to check everything in the psu, if you didnt then BANG!!, buy yet another repair kit. And to think that i was just a c.b radio repairer at the time, pace boxes made cheap c.b's look really reliable LOL :-D. Yes mr rossmann is funny, but he did used to be too arrogant for my taste, he is great now :-D

Your investigative intuition as to the scuffing up of board on the 2nd drive is, embarrassingly, point on as far as what has lead me to your site to begin with...clumsy, incorrect tool for the job use :( Any how, great video especially since I knew nothing about HDD repair and will admit to having a box full of non working drives. Who know, perhaps one or two will have a visually diagnosable Diode problem like you have shown. I'd venture that perhaps. The others, I'm still saving my pennies to rescue. Oh, and while I've no clue that it mattered in the end, it did appear to me that you did apply the boards in a switched fashion as #2 PCB went on disk one, etc. Only realized by virtue of factory inscription within grooves on black siding. Regardless, so much learned from you ..thank you, thumbs up and subscription buttons hit.

Jeannie Furey.. Hi Jeannie.. Firstly thank you for the kind comments, they're much appreciated. Regarding the PCBs being refited to the opposite drive, you're right, however to be quite honest I cant remember what I was doing at the time, although If i remember correctly I was aware of a very faint click or suspect sound from one drive, so perhaps I was testing to see if the pcb would work on the other drive. And as these drives were identical.. as in they were from the same batch etc and used the same chipset it did work👍. I now have one of the drivess here for myself, as the guy who's drives these were told me to keep the one that I suspected of having mechanical issues, which I did after cloning his data for him, and the drive is still working as a test drive today, and used to swap over any none critical data from drive to drive. Cheers, John

how did you find out the diode was hot if the diode is placed under the board when it`s screwed to the hdd shell? I`m asking because I was thinking about connecting the pcb to the PSU without the hdd shell connected to it, but then it comes to my mind that the motor( in this case the load ) wouldn`t be consuming much charge.. so for many experiments it wouldnt work... I`m still to go buy a laser thermometer so for me, finding out what`s heating is like touching the component with bare hands and sometimes it`s not advisable... ( not to say wrong)

oh, that`s awesome. thanks for the reply.. I`m poor so I will have to stick to the laser thermometer. this camera is probably very expensive here in Brazil.. and I cant wait 4 months to have it shipped from china to brazil. anyway, I suspected you had found it through its heat signature somehow, either touching it or measuring it with an instrument of some sort.

i made accidental hole onto HDD PCB board, what kind of chances i got? How i know PCB got 6-7 layer so just repairing face tracks won't help, will it?
@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay in responding.. If you have managed to avoid any internal layers your chances of repair are good. If you're not sure about damaged internal layers perhaps have the PCB XRay'd if possible to help you determine its condition. If any internal layers are damaged though the PCB is likely destroyed, and your best best would then be to either buy another identical PCB to see if you can make it work.. Or as a last resort data recovery will be the only option if its valuable to you. Cheers John

Can u tell me what it means when I turn on my power Mac g4 and the hard drive only spin if I take the ribbon off
@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry but.. The system as a whole will need looking at to test properly for such a problem. Doesn't sound like a drive problem though if it powers up ok with just the 4 pin molex connector. You can check that the ribbon cable itself is ok, and that all the motherboard and hard drive ribbon cable connector pins are good and straight. As connecting the ribbon cable is stops the drive there may possibly be a short etc somewhere on the mainboard. It needs investigation though.

@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics Жыл бұрын
Hello Danny.. I wouldn't like to recommend you attempt to fix your own PCB as it could be literally anything that has failed. And SMD soldering is not easy if you've not done it before. Only with proper circuit/component testing might you get more of an idea of the failure point. Saying that I have posted a link here to what was shown to be the same numbered board, and circled a couple of diodes that would be worth checking. Caps in that area could also be tested. I can't see any part numbers on these diodes so you'd have to check for part numbers on your components for that. Then head over to the likes of Mouser.com or Farnell.com for spares (You may even find them on Ebay although quality can't be guaranteed there.) www.mediafire.com/view/6wz5vt5pmyiqjxl/Seagate_100710248_Rev_C.jpg/file

@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 3 жыл бұрын
If the new pcb is different or has different firmware, then the drive will not be accessible at all. Data will likely still be present. To avoid loosing data or to aid in recovery you must have a PCB that is exactly the same model, and it MUST have EXACTLY the same firmware version. If your data is important please have the drive repaired/recovered professionally.

@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 5 жыл бұрын
@@andisadler2897 HI Andi.. I'm not a specialist in HDD repair by any means. Damaged track and chip replacements yes.. but not the rest of it. IMO.. If the data on the drive is worth a lot to you, then a data recovery company is your best bet to get it back. If on the other had you just want to try & get the drive working again.. Then.. Before you do anything, if you haven't already.. Check online for your model of drive and the exact problem your having just to see if anyone else has successfully sorted the issue out. Then try the drive in another system with a different data cable just to rule out anything else. It sometimes works. If all else fails... You can try swapping the PCB over. Especially as you have another PCB with the exact same details, it's worth a go. However a PCB swap only works in a small percentage of cases, as the controller and firmware must be the same. If you can do SMD rework then yes swapping the BIOS IC over may work also. But in the end only a hard drive recovery firm would have all the tools, spares, donor parts as well as the likes of MRT Data recovery software etc It might be worth taking a look at this channel for some better pointers kzfaq.infovideos Best of luck with it mate John

If the drive does not even spin up check that you first have the 12v and 5v at it's Molex connector. Yellow +12v , Red +5V, Black Ground. If voltages are all present, drive may have either failed mechanically or PCB component has failed. Perhaps check diode as in this video. If there is important info on the drive seek the help of a recovery company. Warning..They are expensive.

Unless there's been some sort of power surge it's unlikely that the drives have all failed at the same time. I would firstly be checking the power supply. Check that you have 12v and 5v outputs from your power supply to the hard drives.
