I have a Question. Could you put a layer of a soft gel over the natural nail before you use hard gel to build an extension? I ask b/c I’ve heard people talk about doing this so that during removal you can file down to the soft gel layer & then soak off the rest...to protect the natural nail from over filing. I hope I’m making sense. 😆 I don’t know if the soft gel layer would be strong enough though to support an extension though...so I’d love your thought. Thanks so much!

I love this topic so much! When I went to school they taught us both acrylic and gel. Unfortunately I still struggle with acrylic but I am a gel master. I use both hard gel and soft gel for my clients. I am one of two nail techs in town that works with gel. I am constantly having to explain to clients the difference between soft gel, hard gel and acrylic.

Just a note for anyone not familiar w/ Japanese or Korean products: The japanese soft gels (kokoist, leafgel, vetro, etc) used to sculpt extensions are actually known as “semi-hard” & still require that you use an efile or @ least hand file off the top layer before soaking.

I use YN Builder gel on short and active length nails all the time. I love the strength and also love that they never have to get soaked off. I also do a lot of gel polish manicures using two coats of base so that I can e-file it off, but every once in a while they still need to get soaked off, and for whatever reason, some clients like knowing that soaking off is an option. I am grateful for gels because I work in a salon that doesn't allow acrylic because of the odor. Love my Young Nails products!

I've actually used builder soft gel to build extensions and with proper structure they didnt break. I have also built the tip extension with hard gel and the body of the nail with builder soft gel. I think with soft gels it also depends on the brand and quality of the products. I did enjoy this video because many dont know the difference between hard and soft gels. Can you also do a video just on hard gels and the different products within it? For example some use light elegance and it's a "hard gel" but not one you would really use to build extensions. I find that there is also some confusion in the world of hard gels between builder, sculptor, and colored hard gels.

Not sure where you got your info but I have 3XL sculpted extensions using Light Elegance and I pinch them too. LE is perfect for extensions. I’ve used 1 Step, Fibre and builder with no issues. I would not however use a soft gel for the body of the nail. That’s just asking for trouble if any length is involved. I’ve been doing nails full time for 30 years and gel is way.....better now than in 1991 when I first used it in my course. I just laughed when Tracey described the way gel used to be. I cringed at the thought 😂

@@rachnailedit I clearly did not mention any of their builder or sculptor gels. I mentioned specifically their color hard gel, which is a completely different product they offer to illustrate the confusion some have with distinguishing the different types of hard gel and how they should be used. If you have been able to use their colored hard gel to build a nail extension, which again was the only product of theirs I mentioned, then that is great but not my experience. In addition they were provided as an example to help YN understand my request. This was not meant to become a discussion about another brand on their video because their products should be the focus.

Incredibly helpful! I’m a DIYer, and during lockdown, have been doing my sister’s nails. She keeps them short, but her nail tech was doing acrylic overlays. I did a gel overlay, and had trouble with it chipping. Small chips, only in the outer corners at the free edge, but it was getting frustrating. Now I realize I should be doing a soft gel overlay to accommodate her extremely thin, soft nails. She needs more flexibility in the gel rather than a “harder” overlay. I need to get your ManiQ in a pot and I’ll bet it’ll solve the problem. I always remind her that I’m not licensed and am only You Tube self-taught, and she should go back to her pro nail tech as soon as they are safely open for business. But I believe this video has helped me to understand what’s going on. I always do really careful nail prep, so I know the prep is correct. But her natural nails are really soft so I think I’ve been using the wrong product for her overlay. Thanks so much!

Young Nails is so helpful to educate us! I have been doing my own gel nail extensions for 9 months. I didn't know polygel had soak-able and file only versions, until I couldn't soak it away! And then I also realized I needed tradicional hard gel to build extensions, not the softer polygels I've been using. And now I've been in love with YN and all the content they share. 💚

@@kusumweb the jar, or tube of polygel should have written on the label somewhere "soak off ". You need to search for the brands, and then read reviews from others to know if it will truly soak off. I have not been able to soak off any of the brands I've purchased, though the tubes do not have soak off on their labels. You will need to file the polygel, probably will be faster than soaking. Because you will have to file the bulk of the nail Anyways, just to soak off the thin layer on nail.

I offer sculpted hard gel extensions and soft gel! Different clients have different needs and preferences. I have never learned acrylic because the odour gives me migraines and I find it hard to file. In my town (Montreal) most salons are doing cheap dips, MMA acrylic, "shellac" it's almost never actually CND shellac) and "bio gel" (which I just assume means hard gel overlay using Bio Sculpture gel or whatever knockoff version of that). It's always a nightmare trying to figure out what a client has on their nails because of all the different types and the wrong terms being used. I don't blame the clients of course, but at the same time I wish they would pay attention to what they are paying for.

I used to be so afraid of flex because it moves so fast but now I love it! Also, you can totally use soft gel to extend. Lots of Japanese soft gels can be used for extending just like hard gels. I use Kokoist Excel Build over Mega Stick Base. If not that, Presto Sculpting Gel over Presto clear gel. Itś great, you can get the length you want and its so easy to soak off if need be. No matter what, my prep is ALWAYS the same. I use Young Nails Protein Bond after prep/before any enhancement!

Extension refers to extending the length of your nails. Without knowing what they used it sounds like they did give you extensions. If there is a certain kind you want you may need to be more specific in saying what that is or ask the salon if they do that service prior to making an appointment. Are you wanting the extensions with hard gel or acrylic? With tips or using forms? Are you okay with full cover tips instead? Questions like that. When I make appointments I think of it as a starbucks order. You need to give them all the information to get exactly what you want. If they don't offer the service you want, you may need to keep looking for a place or tech that does.

And if yes how can I colour hard gel iv got clear and nude. I know you can mix glitter in so can I mix gel polish in so we get a colour but strength against her being so rough on them. Thank you 😊

You can mix gel polish with your hard gel a well to get colors or even apply the gel polish on top. If you finish file with a 150 file, cleanse with swipe and add a coat of protein bond before the gel polish color that will help prevent chipping and peeling.

On a press on nail would it be better to use a hard gel or soft gel?
@sarahfaith2417
@sarahfaith2417 3 жыл бұрын
Soft gel. Now some people use xxl in length and will as hard gel for structure or support. It if you’re just doing a medium length then just gel polish for color. Also soft gel is just a fancy term for gel polish. Hope this helps!

How do you minimize the heat spike when curing gel, builder gel? I felt so bad for my client it looked very unpleasant.
@youngnailsinc
@youngnailsinc 11 ай бұрын
If you are feeling those heat spikes, it may be that you are using thicker layers of product, which can produce more heat. Try applying less product or using the “low heat” mode on our lamp. In this mode, it will begin curing slower & then the power of the lamp will increase to fully cure. You can also start by curing the nails just outside the light for 20-30 seconds & then place them fully under the light to complete the cure without the heat spikes. www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8Frfkn7/

I’m a nail tech and builder gel and gel is so confusing. Is BIAB hard or soft? Is builder gel hard or soft
@youngnailsinc
@youngnailsinc 2 жыл бұрын
It really is going to depend on what brand you are using. Different product lines refer to their products in a different way, but if you are using YN products, our soft gels include our gel polishes (ManiQ Color and Go Time), ManiQ in the pot, ManiQ Fiber Gel. Our hard gels are any of our Synergy line (Base, Flex, Build, Build Pink, White Sculpture, Precision Tubes). Soft gels are designed to be more flexible, so they are not recommended to build length, but you can use them to create a little more structure over a natural nail. They can be removed by filing or soaking off with acetone. Hard gels are designed to build structure or sculpt extensions. They become non porous when cured, so they must be filed off to remove as solvents cannot break them down.

What is the difference between builder gel and hard gel?
@youngnailsinc
@youngnailsinc Жыл бұрын
It depends on the company or technician as to how they are using the terms. A "builder gel" can be describing a hard or soft gel but it is for creating structure. For example, a "build in a bottle" is generally a soft gel whereas our YN Build is a hard gel but they can both be used to build the arch of a nail. A soft gel generally works best just over a natural nail, can be soaked off with acetone or filed off. A hard gel is designed to build an extension over a tip or with a form. Once cured, it becomes non-porous and cannot be dissolved or soaked off, so it would need to be filed off.

Is builder get the same as hard gel?
@youngnailsinc
@youngnailsinc Жыл бұрын
A building gel is basically a gel that is use to build structure and depending on the product line, may be a hard or soft gel. In our Synergy Gel system, we have gels that are called Build and Build Pink. These are both hard gels used to build and sculpt the nails. In our line, we also have Sculptor and Concealer gels that are also hard gels and can be used for building structure to the nails.

I know polygel is a hybrid, but would that be considered in the category of soft gel as well? Or just another category on its own..?
@youngnailsinc
@youngnailsinc 2 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking, if a gel product can be soaked off, it would be considered a soft gel. Since polygel is combination of acrylic and hard gel, it really is in a category of its own. However, if you are wanting to categorize it, it would be in the category of building or sculpting products rather than gel polishes.

Hi YN have loved your product and only used your product for the past 5 years. I wasn't acrylic girl until 2 weeks ago. I absolutely love your gel beginner kit. It should include a brush. Besides that it's so durable I've had no lifting and it's extremely easy to fill. My question though..... I used the "fill a whole well tip" method for my own hands and have a ledge underneath and I'm scared to file it out because I'm afraid that's my structure.... How do I avoid that. My nails are amazing. I'll send you a pic via insta

If you apply a hard gel or soft gel over natural nail first, is it best to apply gel color on the sticky layer directly out of light or is it better to wipe sticky layer, buff it up and then apply gel color?
@alinacornejo6950
@alinacornejo6950 3 жыл бұрын
I use both hard and soft gels. I typically wipe off the sticky layer because some gel polish brands don’t like the gel used to build the overlay. I also lightly rough up the surface with a medium grit sanding band. It promotes extra adhesion and prevents chipping of the gel polish.

I have had two people reach out to me and they ask for hard gel because they use to use dip. I want to know if they should use hard gel or soft gel going forward?
@youngnailsinc
@youngnailsinc 8 ай бұрын
It would really depend on the client, how they want to wear their nails as well as what their lifestyle is. If they just want their natural nails with an overlay or very short extensions, the Fiber Gel will work well since it is flexible but durable. If they want longer extensions or are harder on their nails or have their hands in water or other chemicals on a regular basis (ex. hairdressers, bartenders, house cleaners, etc), hard gel may be a better option for them.

I've never used any of the products soft or hard gel so I'd like to find out if can one file the soft gel builder to get the fine finish look so I can apply gel polish over? I'm confused really or you can only file the hard gel builder since it's almost like acrylic?
@youngnailsinc
@youngnailsinc 2 жыл бұрын
Soft gel is referring to gel polish mainly. You wouldn't need to file it to be smooth. You would file the natural nail or enhancement before applying the gel polish. Hard gel you would hand file/ electric file in to shape and remove bulk and then apply a gel top coat or gel polish on top.

I feel like this was kinda condescending. I'm a huge fan of you guys, Greg, Young Nails, and your protein bond. I feel like this was mostly a dig at the ABS Plastic tips vs the Soft Gel tips. Can you e-file on plastic full cover tips? I'm talking about cuticle work, sidewalls, the whole 9 yds? No. The quote unquote soft gel nails? Absolutely! And you DO have to cure them on, they have a porous surface that allows other gels to adhere PERMANENTLY without having to file scratches because, like you said, gel sticks to gel AND it soaks off, plastic does too, but I don't get how you guys are bashing methods you've never used. We all know that you are better at nails than us; that's why we are watching you and not vice versa. I don't see why that means we have to walk around with busted up sets until we can begin to be comparable to yalls talent. I mean, we found methods that work for us and give us GORGEOUS nails THAT DON'T LIFT (thanks to very thorough prep and of course, protein bond: nothing can beat it!) But I'm pretty sure y'all have gone over this several times, especially since releasing your new tips. With abs plastic tips, the gel separates from the tips and it's just a mess. You can etch the inside with the e-file and add primer inside, for MAYBE a LITTLE MORE longevity. And I'm pretty sure that no one is ever going into a salon saying that they got gel nails if they only got gel top coat, ya know? The reason I and likely everyone else is subscribed to your channel is because we LOVE NAILS AND HAVE A THIRST FOR KNOWLEDGE, ya know, and , again, that protein bond 🤘; another difference is that you can bend soft gel tips and they maintain their shape, plastic does not. Please just do me, well us, a favor, on Suzie's Career Nail Academy channel, I'm sure you know who I'm talking about, search in her videos just type "next level press on nails" and I'm sure you'll see where the great debate is coming from. Just please check it out. Along with lazy girl method by slay by Jay and femibeauty method by Femi Beauty. You'll get where I'm coming from and thati mean NO DISRESPECT AT ALL. Just please, see where we're coming from 💖 thank you!🤗
