First round of hard rubbish picking took 1.5 hours mostly due to being in the wrong area to where the main scrap was.
Turned out ok steel wise, lot's of small scrap bits and some e-waste.
next pick up will give us a better idea on what can be found in two quick trips.
Hard rubbish season goes through winter, so about 3 months of constant picking, enough scrap for all year if you have the room.
Keep scrapping & have fun!

Just retired from police work. I'm also somewhat disabled now. I started watching your videos a few months ago and the scrapping bug bit me. Even with this disability I think I can scrap on a small scale. Thanks Ben.

Awesome Gamers Hi, I'm in the same position you are. I started in Sept 2017! I owned my own business for 25 years, I mostly retired about 3 or 4 years ago. Ben's videos has been a big inspiration for me! There is a couple of things that back fired a couple of days ago. Comment back and I'll let you know more of what to look out for. Especially since you sound like you and I have a lot in commend, with our disability!!!

Just random information here. That plastic device with the key is an airlock, it's used to allow gases to escape during the fermentation process without allowing outside air from entering. You half will it with water and as the pressure inside the key builds up it will bubble through, but the outside air can't force it's way in.

Great episode. I’m just sorry he left out that TV with all that juicy. copper . I love when Ben says about how much an item is worth. I didn’t know for ex. that a cooking pit was worth a dollar.

Another great video Ben, just remember if you are going after cast iron from the BBQ take the burners too, they are usually easily removable and cast as well.

Hey Ben, on the exhaust those are actually the mufflers(close to the rear of the car), the cat conv. is further on up towards the engine(for most vehicles, it may or may not be different depending on the model it is)....could also be different here in the US vs. Australia too I guess. Either way I enjoy watching your videos.

Ben, take care some very expensive stainless steel is magnetic, i.e. tools and rifle barrels, there are two types, austenitic stainless (sinks etc non mag), Ferritic and martensitic stainless, (tools etc).

the keg was from a home beer brewer. the plastic thing on top was an air lock - when filled with water it would allow the CO2 from the fermentation to escape without allowing air back in to contaminate the brew. good find - might be stainless.

Glad to see your going at it Ben!, I'm back into that stuff tomorrow haha. The reason why some streets haven't got much hard waste, is because some households just don't have much to throw out. Considering that areas like Moonee Valley, Moreland, Darebin and Brimbank have annual hard waste collection each year, many residents simply have nothing to put out for hard waste some years, because they've already thrown stuff out in the previous years hard waste
@eWasteBen
@eWasteBen 7 жыл бұрын
yeah true, today was better. I like the Moreland area, good for the more quirky & retro stuff. was going to do a little Brimbank tomorrow, it's probably the heaviest scrap area of the lot.

I see so much scrap metal laying around! I txt my scrap metal guy - he helped me out with other projects I've got going at home. Also, he gets whatever I pick-up while I'm at work, as I walk streets on my job. I throw it in a bucket for him, everything from car parts, to bolts/screws that will kill my or someone else's tires, to heavy steel things lying in the road, that I don't even know what they are from - just that they are steel. If its too much for me to deal with while I'm working, I txt him the address/location. He's working hard to make ends meet & raise a family; I appreciate him.

Do you strip smaller wire, or just sell it as coated wire? I've got some that is such a pain in the a$$ to strip -- it is bundles of fine wires, as in , think a lamp. It doesn't want to be skinned & holds me up!
@eWasteBen
@eWasteBen 6 жыл бұрын
Nope, never. all low & mid grade wire is sold as is, you don't get anymore value from stripping it. I only strip thick copper wire, usually comes from industrial machinery, not general electronics

Only thing that annoys me is when you destroy things that others could have used. When I used to look through hard rubbish collection it was frustrating to see cool things that I could have used or easily repaired but destroyed for a few cents of scrap value (power cords cut off working items, grill taken from a good BBQ ;) ). Yeah I know, first come etc... :p the things people throw out :)
@eWasteBen
@eWasteBen 7 жыл бұрын
over the next 2 months there will be many hundreds of bbq's left out, remember there is only 24 hours until everything goes to landfill, so isn't it better to take some value then to let it rot in the dump?
@Andrew_Sparrow
