For some children, socializing and learning are being cruelly complicated by homelessness, as Scott Pelley reports from Florida, where school buses now stop at motels for children who've lost their homes.

Your heart goes out to the kids, but you also feel embarrassed for them, especially those who are in their teens. It's awkward enough adjusting to growing up, but having to do so in a neighbor's home, or some motel, and then to have your story told on the news for the world to see., there's no way I could do it.

I have been there. It was only a week but it was the longest week of my life in a motel with my husband, daughter, dog and two cats. I had an ectopic pregnancy and needed emergency surgery. My landlord threw me out because I was 3 days late on the rent. I had been unable to work for 3 weeks and was extremely weak. I had lost half my blood. Luckily I was able to become roommates with another family in financial troubles and we were able to get on our feet. I hope the best for all of these families. I hope they are okay now.

It's a shame, really. The thing is that there is no food shortage in this country. What there is, is a food distribution problem. Go look at all of the dumpsters behind grocery stores, and look to see what restaurants throw out every day. There is no need for this terrible amount of waste to be happening.

Joshua Smith I do agree , as I worked many of fast food joints, I have seen tons of food going to waste , even like when I used to work at McDonalds all the leftover meat what the manahers didn't want after the waste count would get all thrown in the trash . whole trays of nuggets , chicken patties . all in the trash to be smashed at the dumpster . Pizza places now if no one claims any mistake pizza , or leftover i seen stacks go pile up in the back to be thrown out next day . I would take my mistakes , or claim the leftovers to feed homeless folks .

The current definition of poverty is ridiculous. The current definition is $23,040 for a family of four. In 1971, the definition of poverty was equivalent to $31,680 today, adjusted for inflation: the govt is skewing the stats to make us believe that fewer are in poverty.

I can relate to these kids more then anyone can imagine and it breaks my heart, my family didnt even reach the poverty level. By 15 I had a job and hardly went to school and yet somehow managed to graduate, I'd rather have my kid stay with family or friends then have my kid worry or grow up homeless, I'd rather be homeless and have my kids with a roof over their head. No one ever thinks they'll be that "guy" but you can always be that "guy".

zombie slayer 22 Going hungry for days on end when there was literally nothing in the house and when there was it would be two loafs of bread to feed three people or a couple weeks, not knowing if I was going to have a home after school, in the winter it would warmer outside then inside (-15 degrees), not knowing if there would be enough money for clothing when mine was so worn I couldn’t wear them anymore, sadly the list just continues. As bad as it was it has in many ways made me more tougher, resilient and resourceful but it’s no way to live ether however it’s prepared me for if the worst of anything to come.

KiloByte -- you can blame globalization! Before free trade started things were good. Once the greedy companies and the corrupt government agree to take the jobs out of the country, that’s when everything stared to go downhill. We need to take care of American families first. I’m not saying we shouldn’t help others, but at this moment families here are going homeless and hungry too. We are at the point where we have to decide between; BIG GOVERNMENT OR BIG BUSINESS!! They both want to enslave us. Look at agenda 20-30 or the CLOWARD-PIVEN STRATEGY. You’ll be surprised!!

Whatever you do, do not go to a shelter with an intact family. Mom and young kids will get a place, but Dad, forget it. He can sleep under a bridge. Same for older teen boys. Better to live in a vehicle, or a tent in a secluded place. Tell the school you're moving and study wherever you are, whenever you can. Expect no help from CPS, only to lose your kids and probably your marriage.

I personally can say that the tiptoeing around because you’re afraid of being kicked out is such a real and strong fear. No kid should have to carry that weight on their shoulders.

What is really needed not only in America but in many countries, is teaching financial literacy at school: how to budget expenses and develop the habit of saving.

I recently watched the 2005 movie 'AMERICAN JOBS'. In 2004 a teacher had student go to store & see where items were made. . In 2004 the students were STUNNED to see so little is made in America. We have been exporting our jobs for years. This problem has been brewing for years. . From 2000 to 2007 we lost 39,000 factories in the US.

As far as I am concern i think it's good to through difficult situations in life as this will enlighten us that life is not a bed of roses especially for those who are lucky to born in the first nations of the world. Hard times discipline us and make us wise and careful.

This makes me so sad.... really.... I just want to cheer them up, tell them everything will be alright, which would unfortunately be a big bad lie.... still, I want to make the smile :(

I am a school bus driver for a large district and we send passenger van sometimes 50 miles one way to pick up homeless kids who once lived within our district boundaries.

One of the things that really gets to me is I've watched the movie The Big Short which caused all of these kids to be homeless because of the faulty loans in there show me people that should be in prison right now not bailed out and it's causing a lot of problems for these kids.

@DenTimesTwo Im not surprised. Your comment speaks volumes about the attitudes/reasons WHY no one gets any "help".....it all comes with a price. HELP comes with a price. You should give 20 dollars to a random homeless family IF YOU ARE ABLE TO ANYWAY!!

Poor children. The hard part is not to live like they've been living but it's to remenber how they used to live and can't do anything to return. Children don't understand how things works and they don't have to. I think they don't have to face how hard the world it is because they'll have enough time to find out. But believe me, the north-america poverty is not even close of the real poverty like in third world. They are lucky and they don't even know.
