Thanks man! Really appreciate the information about it may take multiple after market pumps and to exchange it if it doesn’t fix it. And the line at the end that “it’s the only thing you have ever seen cause hard steering in a Honda really helped” really put my mind at ease! I wasn’t sure if possibly the rack was part of the problem. Thanks man!

The internal pump problem is usually a binding "flow control valve"(pressure valve) which is binding in it's bore. you will see minor scuffing/abrasion marks on the valve and the valve bore walls.

This wasn't in a Honda but in my Holden VY SS Commodore where the genuine GM power steering reservoir cap which was ordered from Holden in Australia to replace the leaky cap caused it even after I rebuilt the leaky power steering rack and pump,I also freed up as stuck bypass valve inside the pump as well. The new OEM cap didn't have a vent check valve in it which should've been underneath the dipstick part which just snaps out & clicks back into place. So,I got a 2 millimetre (3/32" drill bit) & drilled a hole into the cap which fixed the problem. What was happening is that when the aerated fluid made it back to the reservoir from the power steering rack the air had nowhere to go so the reservoir was getting pressurized & the aerated fluid was just getting circulated back into the power steering pump & rack. The hole allows air to bleed off rather than be trapped inside the power steering system !

Hey NoNonsense! Love your videos, been following along for a little bit now. Have finally acquired an Acura TL, but the steering gets very hard to turn at only LOW RPM. Would this indicate a new pump should be installed? I've read something about a PSS30 part and just changing the O-rings have also helped others, but I figured I'd ask a pro!
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Beattie Thanks, I really appreciate that. Yes it's probably a worn-out pump but if you read to try replacing just the orings first I would certainly try that. Is it whining?
@TekNeekify
@TekNeekify 4 жыл бұрын
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow It's been in a shop getting some work done to pass a safety inspection and isn't plated yet, but from what I notice, there is no whining from the pump while I have it idling in the driveway and the shop also didn't notice it. (I move the vehicle to get access to the garage, so turning at low RPM and reverse parking are definitely something I need to do with ease and not fight the wheel!) I had it looked at QUICKLY by a friend who is a mechanic and they said they didn't notice anything wrong with it either, but that doesn't always mean anything, as I said, it was a quick inspection off the clock.
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 4 жыл бұрын
@@TekNeekify I see. Well yes if there is any air in the system that could cause hard steering as well. Or if the power steering fluid is low. But a lot of time these Honda pumps just get worn out and cause hard steering at idle. Next time it's hard to steer, try giving it some gas while the car is in park or neutral and see if it gets easier to turn. If it does then it's probably the pump

My mother in law is having an issue with her Odyssey's steering. I'm not convinced it's the pump since its fine when the car is cold. When it warms up is when it becomes stiff. Ever heard of that happening on these cars or in general?
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 4 жыл бұрын
I haven't personally seen that exact scenario. But I suppose I could see that happening. The fluid becomes thinner when it gets hot so maybe that is affecting the flow rate if the pump is worn out. Also clearances inside the pump are changing when it gets hot.
@David-qu3ro
@David-qu3ro 4 жыл бұрын
NoNonsenseKnowHow thanks for the reply! I was actually on my way over when I commented...it's the pump. She also ended up telling me it was hit and miss. So then I took it out and it didn't matter if it was cold or not. It was hard to turn until I pumped the throttle, and then it was easy. Whats crazy is, this pump was replaced under warranty at 53k miles. The van now has 140k. The warranty wording is kind of vague as it says it's extended to 7 years/100k from original purchase. I'm hoping it means from when that pump was installed, but I'm afraid it's just the purchase of the vehicle...
