In this video I build up a layer of hardfacing on the axe head to determine its suitability so obviously i then had to test it to destruction, I was also curious as to what would happen to iroko if used on the haft, it has very good weather resistance as well as being quite atractive!

Super interesting. Preheating does help, but hardfacing rod and wire have a definite learning curve. Certainly I haven't mastered it yet! Another way to get around it is just weld it and finish it. Then when it breaks, weld that bit again. With each repair you should end up with less and less weak spots from porosity, etc.

I clicked on the like button as soon as i heard the phrase "greasy as a girl you meat in a nightclub" I used the this old tony method of TIG welding high strength tool steel filler rod onto the edge of my axe head.

interesting. turbo conquering result friend. I would like to see you cut an axe in half, and make a two-headed axe and then apply this welding technique in the cut.

Interesting idea, not a fan of double bit axes, I hate straight handles and I'm always scared of splitting my face in half!

Perhaps try to heat the head up as you lay the bead down, like you said. If you had your mate using a torch to heat it up and you follow right behind the torch flame laying your bead, it may well work. Couldn’t hurt!

+Ray McConnell mine came from a supermarket in England, you will find them on eBay though, search belt grinder and you should have plenty of options, hope this helps.

Would you want a hardened edge on an axe, if you hit something in the wood like a nail or stone wont it shatter and throw hardened steel shards everywhere at high speed?
@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006
@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 6 жыл бұрын
Beach&BoardFan it depends completely on what you are doing with it, the longer I spend using an axe in the shed for shaping and carving, the the sharper and finer I want my axes, obviously if I'm digging up a tree stump it calls for a more robust set up.

+Beach&BoardFan depends completely what you are doing with the axe, definitely with a pack axe you want to keep the weight down and let the edge do the work, splitting maul... Not so much.

I feel you forgot to put a shroud and use gas in this video. Hence the small bubbles in your welds aka porosity

Hop on the Miller or weldingweb forums for better advice than mine, , but that weld was ghastly and a good preheat then slow cool should reduce or eliminate the "hot shorting" cracks. The idea is sound. I'm sure that wire wasn't cheap, but if it was, good for you scoring a large roll!. Post the maker and alloy and other welders with more time hardfacing may chime in.

Did you start that video with a burp? Know what you mean about the smell from a cheap Chinese axe head. Smells lovely but in a bad way. Shared to the Axe Junkies Facebook group. God knows what the Americans will make of it........ 👍👍

Егор Михайлов science! I like fine edge axes, these cheap axes won't hold a fine edge so I experiment to try and make a £5 axe as good as a £100, the last video i made like this was a lot more successful, I think I'll be able to hardfacing this axe better with my tig then I will have an axe that can chop a brick then shave my face, who doesn't want an axe like that?
@user-px2iu2pu5t
@user-px2iu2pu5t 6 жыл бұрын
but a good carpenter ax should not shave, it is not a battle ax ... or, perhaps, you want to do
@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006
@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 6 жыл бұрын
Егор Михайлов i agree, carpentry axes are sold blunt, as are most factory axes, I don't know any carpenters that use axes but if you want any control across the grain you need a good sharp edge. I'd be interested to know what a battle axe edge looked like, I tried building an executioner's axe and all the research said that in England they were normally pretty blunt and made from wrought iron using their massive weight to smash through a neck rather than slicing as Hollywood would have us believe, there could be some similar discrepancy with battle axes?
@user-px2iu2pu5t
@user-px2iu2pu5t 6 жыл бұрын
I did not say that the ax should be blunt, I meant that with the right hardening you will not be able to sharpen it to the point of shaving
@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006
@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 6 жыл бұрын
Егор Михайлов mate I'm not correcting you, sorry if it sounded like I was, axes are all about personal preference! However hard I get it, I'll always find a way to get it sharp, I've got a shitty set of diamond files if nothing else works, I did struggle with this stuff though, toughest steel I've ever come across, I'm really just experimenting, and you know people used to make axes by forge welding expensive steel edge into a cheap steel head, this was kind of a modern version I suppose plus no one else has tried it so I thought I'd better give it a go just to see.
