3 Days of Fly Fishing in California's backcountry for some of the most legendary native trout in the world!!
California is well known for the Golden trout, one of the coolest native species of trout in the world. But to catch these fish in their native range, which is what we wanted to do, you have to hike well over 20 miles one way to accomplish that task. So after planning the trip we were able to book a plane ticket and found ourselves deep in a California National Forest.
Day 1 in California's wilderness involved us hiking around 5 miles to catch the Little Kern Golden trout. This native trout is separated from the Kern River Rainbow by one set of falls on the lower end of the Little Kern River. These fish don't quite exhibit the same golden Hugh as the more famous California golden trout, but we were able to find some fish with yellow bellies which made for a cool experience. After catching and releasing our fair share of fish we hiked another 5 miles and set up camp.
Day 2 in California found us face to face with several black bears and rattlesnakes. We learned quickly that California's backcountry isn't a joke and that we needed to be on alert at all times. We hiked to our next locations and started fishing for the Kern River Rainbow trout, which was far more difficult to catch due to the high water levels. We did end up finding a few and then fished a little tributary to ensure we caught a good representative of the species before hiking to our camp site. While setting up camp we literally had snakes slithering around us... which was unsettling.
Day 3 involved a pretty strenuous hike up a mountain in search of the California golden trout. We blue lined a few creeks once we got above a set of falls separating the California golden trout from the kern river rainbow trout. We were able to hit 4 different creeks and catch the native California golden trout in them. One was an awesome spring creek, one ran through some awesome volcanic rock, and another was tannic with pine sap. It was truly one of the most incredible experiences I've ever had fly fishing. The trout were feeding with little regard for our presence, which is not a shock considering we were over 20 miles from the nearest road.
Overall this trip to the backcountry of California in search of the golden trout was one I'll never forget. It was the best camping, backpacking, and fishing experience of my life probably, and I'm not sure if I'll ever get to do it again or not. I truly hope you enjoyed watching Andrew and I fly fish these small streams for trout. Thanks for watching!

Not gold, it's a flaky silicate called mica that forms in sheets and can break down into those small bits that looked like gold. Love the video!

I've never been to the Sierra Nevada Range. To go up in the high Sierra was a definite bucket list item, but afraid time and resources have run out. That is fine. I've been blessed to fish other beautiful places with the best of friends. To remember the first species of trout caught, where I netted it and what it ate will remain with me. Now I'll experience The Sierra through your eyes, fishing and digital cameras which ain't too bad. Take care.

it is so tough to get into that area. I do it from the eastern side on week long trips. it's a little easier to access. my favorite ways to access the Kern are kearsarge pass, up bubbs Creek, over Forester pass, over to lake south america, down the upper Kern basin to the tyndell cutoff back over to the jmt, over Forester pass, bubbs Creek and out kearsarge pass. another is trail pass to golden trout creek, down to little Whitney meadow, down to the Kern, back up to volcano creek, over to golden trout creek and out trail pass. I've accessed it from the west side via the high sierra trail as well. much harder to hike in and out though.

Why are the fish so small? Is it Just because of the small stream?
@RadGhost-gt5sq
@RadGhost-gt5sq 13 күн бұрын
For the most part yes, from what I know it’s easier for the fish to get bigger the bigger the water. If the fish gets so big in that small stream it would get picked off really easily.

The fish up there are in the High Sierra. Winter is long and harsh. They are the right size to survive. You don't fish for them to catch big fish. You do it for their wild beauty.
@SDlobsterman
@SDlobsterman 8 күн бұрын
I've fished that area for 4 plus decades, they *do* get a lot bigger, even in the tiny creeks, BUT, it's quite uncommon because the conditions are harsh. Also, Goldens don't get particularly large to begin with. Anything over about 15" is a trophy size for most people.

@hardmanfishing
@hardmanfishing 10 күн бұрын
Not necessarily true... if you take care of the fish they almost always survive. Plus it's totally legal to keep and eat them as far as I can tell. So obviously the state of California does not deem the golden trout to be in bad shape. And stocked trout do nothing more than take the place of wild trout and arguably cause more harm... in fact the kern river rainbow is a species of concern BECAUSE of stocking. In other words this comment is totally backwards, you should stop supporting stocking these waters and instead fish for the native trout and show the state what value they bring. Thanks for watching.
