The Hardy Ultralite MTX-S is Hardy's further development of their first fly reel featuring a hybrid carbon fibre / alloy main frame construction - the MTX. The MTX-S has improved structural rigidity, stunning cosmetics and most importnaly adds a sealed drag system making it saltwater proof. In this video Peter McLeod gives his thoughts and then puts it through its paces using his specially designed "Lab Test"....

It's been out for a while now, and still the most stunning reel on the market. I bought the Ultralight ASR 7000 which is a fantastic reel, and has changed the way I play and fight fish. I'm currently saving for an MTXS for my river trout fishing.

Great review. Just picked up a brand new Hardy Zephrus 5wt 9' rod. I've been scouring the internet trying to pick a reel to pair with the Zephrus. Looks like I've found a winner with the MTX-S.

When it hit me the "Lab" test was your dog...I laughed out loud! But it makes perfect sense. The only "big" saltwater fish I ever caught was a 10lb snook and it was super fast right out the gate and ran fairly long (burnt my fingers until I got it on the reel). Now I know how to test a new reel...my daughter has a Corgi and that dog can get up to speed in the blink of an eye. My neighbors are going know I'm really insane instead of suspecting. Your test is perfect on dry land. Again, I laughed out loud. I'm still chuckling.

By the way, I am in the middle of “GT: A Fly Fisher’s Guide..” and thoroughly enjoy it. Nice way to spend the days on quarantine.

Hi Peter How is the backing capacity on 7000 and 5000 with braided? I just set up my 7000 aiming for two-hand 6/7wt application perfectly fit with 30lb Dacron x 100m, but it actually feels more for two-hand 8/9wt or single hand 10wt for the centre of balance. Wonder how you set up one.

I think from memory I got about 200 yards of 50lbs braid on the 7/8/9 on the line winder... I would imagine the 7000 would take about 150 yards..

@@AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing Thank you very much for sharing the figure:) That's roughly +35% line capacity with 50lb replacing 30lb Dacron, so assuming +60% with 30lb braid allowing 160m on MTX-S 7000. I measured the max drag was 1.9kg. Not that strong compared with Ross Evolution-R, but palming the reel will add plenty of power to stop bonefish or regular salmon, but not for offshore or chinook. If that's the case, MTX-S 5000 can take up to about 100m of 30lb braid based on this estimation. Max drag probably the same, I think 5000 is better choice on single hand 8wt or two-hand 6wt (when not needing additional winding speed) doing contemporary finesse tactics on presentation.
