Today we are comparing two amps in the same price range; the Harley Benton Tube 15 and the Marshall Origin 5. The Marshall is a 5 watt amplifier, with a power scaling option from 5/0.5 watts, an Fx Loop, volume/boost, tilt EQ and the typical three band EQ.
The Harley Benton comes with built-in reverb, power scaling from 15/1 watt, three band EQ and a presence knob, master volume and gain. It also has an Fx Loop. Considering the price point of each, the features but especially the tones you can squeeze out of both amps, we'll try and determine which amp is right for you.

I really wanted to love that Origin. I had it in mind that I could break the proverbial "code" and make it sound killer. Alas, I could not find it, the trick to making it sound huge. Perhaps someone will come along and demystify it, but I could not do it. For that amount of cash, the HB is hard to beat. Cheers

I've have had a Monoprice 15 ($200.00 delivered on sale, identical to the HB, just, different silk screening on faceplates) for about 18 months now and have never had a single moment of buyers remorse. This video make me even happier. The Marshall just seemed anemic to me compared to the HB, especially for more classic rock type tones. Mine has the speaker well broken in at this point. I have tried other speakers in it and at this point I admit that while the speaker changes have a tremendous affect on the tone of the amp it doesn't necessarily translate to saying it made it sound better, just different. That is purely a subjective distinction. I think breaking in the speaker over these 18 months has also made a big difference. I have many amps of different sizes (including Marshalls and Fenders), but for just breaking out some blues riffs around my studio, this has become my go to amp. One caveat, I also changed the stock tubes at some point with some JJ's I had lying around. I also ordered an Accutronics 3 spring reverb replacement tank but I have not had the opportunity to swap it yet. Should make a big difference I think, much more Fenderish I am guessing. Thanks for the review.
@TheToneLounge
@TheToneLounge 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bruce, I'm glad that the video has helped cement your choice of the Monoprice. You are right, a well broken in speaker will always sound better than anew one. Changing the speaker is a great thing to do if you are really not happy with certain aspects of your tone. If you love everything you hear in the Seventy-80, then no need swapping it out. It's always, as you stated, subjective. If it's inspires you to play, then why the heck not?! I'm all for affordable gear, and if it comes out stock with all the right ingredients for a killer tone, all the better.

Hi Bruce. I just bought the Monoprice 5 days ago. Of course the 70/80 still requires that :Break in: period...How many hours do you feel that it took for that break-in period?
@bsbrooks455
@bsbrooks455 3 жыл бұрын
@@Trailer_Sailor It's hard to say for sure because the change is subtle spread out over a long period of time. I would guess, however, that I played that amp (I have several amps that I switch between) at moderate volume for about 4-5 hours a week and it seemed to stabilize after about 5 - 6 months.

I feel like it's pretty unfair comparing a 8" to a 12" speaker. The Harley IS the better option. the origin 5 has been (too) simplified from the Origin20/50. but it IS in need of a real speaker. there should've been ONE cabinet for all 3 origin amps. a 1x12. period. Or maybe 1x12 on the origin 5 and 20. and a 2x12 for the 50 with V30's for 800 bucks.
@TheToneLounge
@TheToneLounge 3 жыл бұрын
I agree, they all should have had a 1x12 speaker in there. It was a bit silly to make different size speakers depending on the model. It can't of forces people to buy the Origin 50 as it sounds better. If they had put the same speaker for all three models, they might have sold more 5 and 20.

HB wins this hands down. Very helpful video! What I want to know is, how well does it take a distortion pedal? I know it's not built for metal of course, but keep in mind that I don't mean "modern" metal - I don't care if it "chugs", and I'm not looking for a tight sound, I like my metal old school and filthy, and just need something to play at home. This amp + a good distortion pedal is about the same as a used EVH 5150 Iconic 40W combo, specifically, so 🤷‍♂ But I imagine the HB would deliver better overall tone at low volume when scaled down to 1 watt, as opposed to the minimum 10 watts of the EVH...

I had an Origin 20 head, which I liked, clean tones were wonderful. I just played it through a cheap 1x12 cab that I dropped a Greenback into. So why did I get rid of it? The gain knob did nothing until you pushed the power tubes hard enough, and then, even on low output it was so freaking LOUD. Even tried a speaker soak and it just got muddy. I just couldn’t get that mid gain blues and classic rock sound I wanted at basement volume. Now I have the Monoprice version of the Tube15 and it has been great. First thing I did was throw that Greenback I had into it and I love it. On the one watt setting and volume around 3 I can get the sound and the volume level I want……because the gain knob actually does something. I only dial it up to 4 or 5. Cleans are not quite as pristine as those from the Marshall, but it’s a fine trade off for being able to get the greenie to break up and bark like it was made to do.

Yeah, my experience with the Origin amps, both the 5 and 20 watt versions, was lukewarm at best. I love the Marshall sound, and really wanted these amps to be stellar for that kind of money. Sadly for me, it did not cut it. The Tube15, for roughly the same price was the better amp in all aspects. @@TheToneLoungeYes, I do. HB has an OK cost so it's not much of a risk even if it turns out to be bad. Since I'm new to the channel, allow me to add some info about me and some concerns/ideas in general. I'm totally confused with amps and tone in general. I found the channel recently and I hope you help me on this. Guitars are my hobby, I don't gig so I don't care about volume. Yet, I want a decent tone. Playing mostly blues at the time and hard rock all the time. In February I was thinking of buying a tube amp but I feared that I would have to turn it really loud to get that decent tone (then my wife would kill me, the neighbors would call the police, etc) so I bought a Katana 50 (my 4th amp 1st : Fender 10G - Crap, 2nd Blackstar ID Code 40 - Crap, 3rd Roland MicroCube - Great). I'm happy with it but still I'm curious about the tube experience. I live in Greece, it's not easy to test any gear so I'm trying to find reliable youtube videos to decide. I still have some reservations : 1. Will I have to wait for the tubes to warm up? 2. Many say tube amps need to be cranked to get decent tones, is that true? 3. How often should I change tubes? 4. What is the role of tubes (brand) in the tone of the amp? Will I have to spend a small fortune to get decent tone? How vulnerable are these amps to conditions (humidity, dry, etc)? I still have these questions and these are the reasons I got the Katana. I think I will give the Tube 15 a chance. I will use your link when it comes to getting this amp. If you made it this far :), sorry for the lengthy reply. Thanks!

Hey Maybe it's the mic, but Marshall sound similiar to a Fender Frontman, and it's not a good thing ;) narrow, too punchy imo, but low/high setting on Marshall works very well, does not lose any crunch of the valve at all. HB got 12" speaker, so the sound is fuller and wider, obvs. Crunch is just better, nicer. Tones are more pleasant. The amount of the sound goodness is overwhelming in comparison to this Marshall. And You are right, Fuzz did reveal both amps potencial. Marshall sound like Overdrive or Distortion or Chorus or Valve crunch ....... well ... I don't know, and that's the point. I can't tell which effect is beeing used, and that is not a good thing. HB sound nice and Fuzzy, just like 60's amp should sounds like with a Fuzz. I know it's i Fuzz and I like how it sounds. I'm shocked at how bad the Origin sounds! I had the 50 watt head and returned it after a week. It just sounded harsh and fizzy to me. I tried it into a Marshall 212 and 412 cabinet. Terrible with each cabinet. The Hartley Benton looks exactly like the Monoprice amp, hmmm.

The clean channel on the Origin is okay. I almost thought of keeping mine and run an amp modeling pedal into the effects return to just use the power tube section, lol. But I have a Blackstar and a Bugera that both cost less but sound better without the need of any pedals, so I returned the Origin after a week of trying to get it to not sound like a cheap transistor radio.

I'm a lifelong Marshall fan but there's no way around it, the Origin sounds incredibly cheap and bad. My DSL1 has a great crunch sound but that's all it does, the clean channel sounds shrill and there's no useable edge-of-breakup tone. I'm ordering a Stage Right today, thanks for the help!

My pleasure. I really wanted to love that little Origin 5. My deal has always been to find the best in a piece of gear and show it's potential to other guitarists. @@TheToneLounge You might get a kick out of this, my Stage Right arrived today packed in three boxes. When I pulled the amp out of the third box I could see something was very wrong; the speaker was at a 45-degree angle, it had been dropped so hard that the mounting-board was ripped out of the enclosure. I took pictures, tried to contact Amazon, became very depressed lol, then I figured "why not?" and plugged it in . . . works fine. I'll leave any detailed comments about the tone for another time but my initial reaction was positive, IMO it's a good amp. Thanks for posting, much appreciated.

I would say the opposite - in most other videos I have seen, Origin sounded worse than here. I actually would prefer something between Origin and Tube 15. If this Tube 15 is similar to Laney Cub 12R, then you can back up the lows, and push some mids and tone, and will be much closer to real Marshall tone than this small origin has. But I have Greenback in my Cub, it also makes a big difference.
@TheToneLounge

@@TheToneLounge I suspected that from the design and functions. BTW, I think you also know, but for other readers - preamp section of Cub 12 is based on Marshall JCM800, and I can get very Marshally tones from that one, with Greenbacks, much more Marshally than Marshall Origin 5 has in stock. My god that Origin 5 sounded awful I'm sorry to say. At first I thought "well that's just gotta be the speaker" but then you hooked them up to the same cabinet and for some unexplicable reason the Marshall even sounded worse?! Then again, in your other video the Vox AC15C1 definitely sounded better than the HB Tube 15, especially when it comes to how it takes pedals. I was mostly just appalled at how genuinely bad the Origin 5 sounded all across the board. Did you really EQ them fairly? As in, not just set everything at noon on both amps and call it equal but really get in there and tweak the eq to make them sound as close as possible?
