As a newly endorsed rider who hasn't bought her own bike yet - these videos are so important to me. I love your perspective because I've got the same inseam as you, so I know these bikes you try out, will fit me the same. The details of how you feel on the bikes is so helpful! Thank you Jess, and no worries about the tech issues - you're awesome to fill in the blanks!

Really hard to justify the price tag. There's a lot of competition in this category of standards/sport-cruisers with classic looks. Rebel 1100, Bonneville/Bobber/Speedmaster, Z900RS, Scout, etc. all sport better features, performance, handling, and/or price tags. The differences between the Nightster and the Rebel 1100 are so few, that you're essentially paying nearly 50% more just for it to say "Harley-Davidson" on the side.

There’s just one point I would like to make to the justification of paying more for a Harley. Resale and trade value. I’ve seen a lot of guys trade in their Metrik motorcycles within a year or two and lose half of their value while Harley doesn’t seem to lose near as much. So you may spend 15,000 on a bike like the nightster, in two years later be ready for something bigger and then your value is probably going to be somewhere around 12 to 13,000. You only lost two or $3000 of value whereas a metric bike that you spend $10,000 on is now only worth $5000. So at the end of two years which one really cost more? I still see 20 year old Harley’s worth more than a five year old metric in the same class.
@parsivalshorse
@parsivalshorse 2 жыл бұрын
@@dawsonccfc It will be interesting to see if that holds true for the rev max bikes. The street 500 and street 750's didn't hold their value well and the new powerplant is a bit of an unknown quantity in terms of longevity. It's also fair to point out that many metric bikes devalue at much lower rates than 50% in two years.
@oknevals
@oknevals 2 жыл бұрын
@@dawsonccfc I see two of my metric bikes 4 and 5 years old listed at dealer for higher price than what I put them on the road for. Of course, they would totally try to rip me off on trade in. I think expectation of resale value is just consolation and justification for paying premium. If you ride a lot and ding it lil here and there, you can't expect much. But, I can see Harley being more emotional purchase than say Honda or Kawasaki. Now, if you want to pile up miles, there is not much to think about which one is more likely to get you there.

Been following your channel for quite a while. What great adventures you have had! Your reviews are frank and honest and that's much appreciated. I'm not in the market presently for a new motorcycle. I went from Yamaha to Harley and presently in my retirement I ride a GL1800 Goldwing. However with this review that you just posted, you were quite literally in my back yard. I'm glad you got to experience the back roads around Santa Barbara. I never take what we have here for granted. Hwy 33 is one we can ride from sunny to snow in the winter! In fact we can ride all the way up to San Francisco on back roads like Hwy 33 and never hit a freeway. I'm so happy you got to enjoy our back yard. Keep up the great posts on your channel. I haven't owned a motorcycle in 40 years (Honda 350), but as I look to retirement I'm seriously thinking about riding again and this bike looks perfect. I went to my local HD dealer and sat on it and it feels perfect for my frame. Since I'm not an old Harley Hog owner I don't care about the sound. I'm going to take the HD riding course next and then probably grab this thing. Thanks for the review!

As a headbanging metalhead motorcyclist, you absolutely NAILED that intro and have me wanting to try something like that now haha! I'm a bit biased for this platform since I'm a very outspoken V-Rod lover/owner, which was more or less the predecessor to the Revolution Max, but this particular machine looks sweet! The Sportster S has impressive specs and all, but the Nightster is badass with the aesthetics! I could see one of these next to my Night Rod Special in the garage for sure.

Some reviewers aren't lying when they say the 2022 Nightster is all plastic. I was checking mine out be of the common Revo electrical issues the PanAm/Nightster/Sportster S seem to be facing. I almost cried because I felt like I was taking apart an instrument cluster of a car. Im already not happy with how my dealership dealing with it, if I don't like how they approach if the a check up, I may return it for another bike. Though it's under a 3 year warranty, I got the bike @36Miles Odo. I might end up fixing the issue myself (it's just a missing tube line and missing fluids but still)

You are correct--the Nightster was not designed for me. But Harley-Davidson is competing in a global market, and it would surprise me not at all to find there are more takers for this than the conventional big Harley. @@Shastar271828 , back in the day industrial control software had a "function generator" feature in the blockware. It was an "X (input)=Y(output)" that was based on percentage, and the steps were typically 10 percent. If you were controlling a valve, the position feedback from the valve was one term in the PID (proportional, integral, derivative) control. Getting the valve to control properly during the initial 10% of travel is much more difficult than the remaining 90%. I agree that whoever "tuned" the software has more work to do, maybe actually riding the bike to observe the effects of tuning instead of downloading their latest guess based upon what the test riders tell them?

Recently bought a bagger after years of more "sports" driven riding and I am enjoying the relaxed stature of my bagger, however I also still have my 15 yr old sportsbike w 24cc's more of displacement than this bike that puts out almost twice as much hp w 15 more ft/lbs of torque (as listed) ..... and that's the crux of the Harley situation, until they can technologically move forward they will remain "THE OLD GUYS" bike brand. I am happy to be a part of that group as I am learning the charm Harley brings to the riding experience for sure, Prices for these bikes also trend more towards established (older) customers as comparable bikes from other brands will be (as stated elsewhere in the comments) 4 - 5K less for a MORE capable bike unfortunately. I am hopeful for them to continue taking steps towards catching up w the market because we the riders still need them in the bike mix ! Enjoying your take on riding and your experience as I am suggesting your videos to new riders and more importantly female riders that are thinking about trying a motorcycle for the first time - keep up the great work Jess !!

I've always liked the Sportster, regardless of what model. You have to go into the Sportster knowing it is a raw machine, meant to be that little monster that can do things you didn't think it could and will do it with an attitude. I haven't ridden the new Sporty yet, but if the throttle is as twitchy as you say then I'm sure it will be like the Pan America, which I thought was twitchy. I'm with you, Jess. The old Sportster is a dinosaur! Over 50 years old with not a lot of changes. Harley, much to their credit, is trying to move into the 21st century. My Son who is 28 and owns a hot rodded FXR just rolls his eyes at how yesteryear Harley and many of its riders are. He is kinda done with Harley because of this and is talking about getting a Yamaha and just riding it instead of working on it all the time. But he rally likes the Pan America! So maybe there is still hope. I think Harley is on the right track with the Rev Max engine and I hope they sell a ton of 'em. But the Indian Scout Rogue is a comparable bike at about $3000 less, so we'll see, right?

I think that harley could have taken the Moto Guzzi way to modernise itself, and it would be way easier given the larger fanbase the motor company has. It should have kept updating the engine, so it would have been able to keep the air-cooled engines, thus not throwing away ther "heritage". Check the v7 850: while not being a performance bike, it has a good, light, emission regulation compliant engine.

Back when I was serious about getting one, other riders would say to make sure it was a "2nd" bike as they have problems and take a while to get fixed. I didn't notice the brake pedal issue, but I've been told I have big feet, so, dooh! Any way, I'm trying not to get to emotional about this, but it's been 5 years since I've ridden, having sacrificed my '07 Electra Glide for a car for my PhD student; it felt like HEAVEN! I've owned the touring bike and two Sportys; one was technically my wife. I loved my 1200 Custom, but did NOT love the forward pegs because I found it hard to stand that way. I miss that bike, oh hell, I missed BOTH those bikes. I'm working out a deal with an HD Dealership for a USED 2023 NIghtster with S&S Pipes so it sounds like a Harley and not like it needs oil. It also has a USB/Bluetooth Sound Bar to sweeten the deal, and only 1,018 miles on it with FULL FACTORY WARRANTY through May '25. How can I say no? I LOVED the torque! It felt like a tall bike to me, but oh man, was it stable! I started in Rain mode and within about 30 seconds was in Sport mode. I think that this bike is EXACTLY what the 1957 Sportster was meant to be, a FUN SPORT BIKE! So yes, IT. IS. A. HARLEY. You adapt or die. Kudos to Harley for giving us the PERFECT Transition Machine! Roll it on, Rock it out, JB.

Just came across your video and thanks to it I see the motorcycle in a different cool way. By having the top tank just for looks it’ll make it easier to switch and customize it and have aftermarket tanks to put on. This sounds like an awesome fun bike to have for going to work on the back roads. Didn’t like the looks of the motorcycle at first but now it seems like a fun nice motorcycle to have and customize

I LOVE the added theatrical footage they took for you, it looks beautiful. It bothers be a little when people say bikes "aren't Harley Davidson". Yes, yes they are because Harley MADE them. Just because they're not exactly what you have known from them, doesn't mean they're not HD brand. In my opinion, Harley Davidson has been doing an amazing job over the last decade or so of making bikes that tailor to all different kinds of riders. They honestly have a bike for every kind of rider. The Nightster looks like a lot of fun to hop onto for a little city riding or shorter rides. I'd love to hop on one to see how different it is from my old 2011 Nighster. Thanks as always for the informative video!

Thank you for the review! Yep that gas tank will be an issue. First impression when you pulled back the seat to fill it was… uh oh. Exposed electronics. Did anyone think about if gas dripped on the exposed wires and inside? Or if the gas handle malfunctioned and you had over flow? Hmm. It would make sense if they did that, fuel under the seat, it would be all sealed off. Did anyone mention that at the event?

Yup, you said. Those few video frames set off alarm bells in my head. You have to be super careful filling up, but also, just accessing is hard enough. Key on the left, flip up from the right.. def not a one-handed thing. It also makes it harder to fill up at whichever side of the pump you liked...

Regarding the fuel tank lock, shouldn’t the seat at least hinge away from the key lock when accessing the fuel tank? It looks like you’d have to unlock the seat and then walk around to the other side to comfortably fuel the bike.

I own the Nightster, I started on the 883, and the difference in agility was huge. The 883 is so stiff and the Nightster is very nimble. The tiny shifter peg and break was something I thought would be an issue but I adjusted to it quickly. I’m not a fan of the whining exhaust, and I intend to fix that eventually, but my problem is the handle bars and the grips. I’m 5’6” and I have to lean into the bars. The bars are so aggressive and straight that I have to lean a decent amount into it and it’s extremely uncomfortable. Short term it’s okay, but my palms and hands start to hurt so badly within 30 minutes. The grips are too small so I have to have a tighter grip that wears my hands down and then with the forward lean my palms are on fire. We did an3 hour ride and that is the last time I will do that . My husband has ordered new bars and grips, thankfully, because it’s such a fun bike to grip it and rip it. Sport mode really kicks it up beautifully. I’m just really surprised she didn’t have the pain I did, we look to be about the same size and build.

What a great review. I just bought one of these yesterday, identical to the black one seen in the presentation. My first Harley-Davidson. The sales guy - who was an older, lifetime Harley guy - and I were talking about the modern, fuel-injected, liquid-cooled engine with very different ignition timing that no longer produces that trademark Harley shake and rumble (but does produce a good bit more power). I said "I wonder what the old-school Harley guys think about it." Without hesitation, he said "F*** 'em. They don't buy anything." It seems like a very smart and ultimately probably very necessary move for HD to move forward to attract a new group of riders that appreciate this kind of modern engine technology. Like me.

Enjoyed this layout of video the music over riding kept me more captivated, obviously love some riding with the sound of the engine also but the change was good and for me personally the music choices were pritty cool. As for the bike it's not my thing I own a yam xv1600 big vtwin similar to appa but can appreciate where HD is going and that bike will help the people wanting that kind of bike some with hate but such is life.

I had an opportunity to test ride the Nightster this weekend. I found the engine and responsiveness to be great. I also own a BMW F900R and it felt a little like the BMW. I am only 5'3" and what I did not like about the Nightster was the ergonomics. I was stretched a little too far forward and it felt like a sport bike on the my upper body and a standard bike on the lower half. I wonder what the accessory reach bar would do for the ergos on me. As you said, great bike, but maybe not for everyone. Definitely worth a test ride.

I was just talking to a friend about brake pedal/shifter ergonomics on new motorcycles; when a person buys a new high end bicycle, most shops set the bikes up so the riders ergonomics are taken into consideration. When I buy new running shoes at the running stores they go to great lengths to make sure I am fit properly, and knowing ergonomics on a motorcycle is a princess and the pea moment for most riders, I can't for the life of me figure out why the Factory doesn't take that into consideration. I believe that's why there are so many low mileage motorcycles traded in or for sale because riders have no infrastructure to make a motorcycle more comfortable...as I go out into the garage and try to readjust my brake lever on my Dyna for the tenth time at least. Thank you for addressing the people who won't like the new models no matter what; I'm hoping the people who claim that Harley never builds anything for them will get past their biases to try the new models. I thought I was the only one experiencing gopro issues. I literally quit using my 8 for the exact same reason you experienced and when I sent it in for warranty, Gopro said there was nothing wrong with it. It still will not record audio thru an external mic thru the media mod. I bought a 9 at that time and it has it's own problems, turns on and off randomly while recording, takes pictures instead of video randomly and since the latest update turns itself on and off while sitting on my desk in the middle of the night. The battery is always dead in it. I'm very hesitant about buying a 10 thinking that will resolve the issues or move to another brand...and I didn't even address the audio quality issues with the Gopro.

I don’t know honestly. It looks nice but you can get the Softail standard for the same price and it has 40 more ft lbs of torque stock. I know I know, two totally different motors but still. I think the nightster is good for either a starter bike or for someone who wants to turn it into a chopper. I would love to see a chopper with that new motor in it.

The on off switch thing is something common with new bikes due to new emissions regulations that require there to be zero fuel flowing when there is 0% throttle which is why you get that on off thing you can find it in many different brands and it’s mostly due to the new Euro five compliance where is normally they would allow fuel to keep flowing so it would be smooth and not so on and off but that can all be cured with a tune. But it is something you’ll find in those newer bikes that also sell in Europe

Your reviews are honest and fair. That said I don’t see anything about this bike I like and I am a fan of rubber mount sportsters. That exhaust looks like a leaf blower. The covers on the cylinders look ridiculous. Idk if they’re plastic but they look weird. The bike reminds me of something from Star Wars. Def not a fan of the look and the fake fuel tank. Nope. I think they’re going to have a hard time getting buyers at the price point.

Maybe it's a difference in where we live. But I like that the seat locks and blocks access to the fuel tank. It's a built-in locking gas cap that should prevent anyone from stealing your gas. Unlike a normal Sportster that has the gas tank easily accessible, and a gas cap that just opens up as long as you know your left from your right.
