How to change engine oil and filter, transmission, and primary oil in Harley Davidson Sportster models built between 1957 and 1978. Plug locations and how to replace fluids in all 3 systems.
Find the Primary access plug removal tool here:
amzn.to/3JigkHC
Find the engine and primary oil I use here:
amzn.to/3PY50m6
Here is the integrated Filter and canister with spring, like I use in the video:
amzn.to/3zHQg5G
Find the original "drop in" Oil Filter here:
amzn.to/3cNG9TP
You can help me earn from qualifying purchases.
If you use the information in this video to service your own bike, you will save $300 to $500 each time you service your Harley as compared to expensive dealership service fees.
In this video i cover the procedure i use to drain and replace the engine oil, transmission gear fluid, and primary fluid as well as the process to remove and install a new engine oil filter. I show the drain plug locations and the fluid fill and dipstick locations.
Always remember, to start your bike and let it run for at least 5 minutes before you change the oil. Warm oil drains better, pulls out sediment better, and with "Dry Sump" engines like in our Harley Davidson motorcycles, the oil tends to "sump" down into the engine case over time which will prevent you from draining all the oil from the bike during this procedure. This creates a problem because when you start the engine after a cold oil change, the oil pump will pump all the oil that has settled into your engine cases back up into the already full oil tank, causing it to overflow all over your bike and floor and driveway.
This process will be basically the same for all Harley Davidson Iron head Sportster motorcycles built from 1957 to 1978 and can be used as a reference for 1979 to 1985 Sportsters also.

The fact that this man's hardwood floor is spotless at the end despite working on a fossil designed to drain oil on the exhaust pipe, frame, and concrete, tells me he's done it a time or two. Excellent content, informational and I would recommend you watch his HD filter cutting video if you haven't already!!

Brother, your faith in your ability to do an oil change in your residence (on a hardwood floor - DAMN!) is clear evidence that you really know your Harley. I particulary liked your adaptation of plastic bottles to id drainig the oil from the tank and as an unusual funnel for filling the transmission. Many thanks for the interesting demo.

Brings back some memories. Greetings from Australia. My first bike was an ironhead but it looked a little crazier than this one. I think it was a 74 and had the factory right side shift. I recall riding with my buddies and just to be extra annoying I'd make sure to wear my 'Ironheads - blowing away big twins since 1957' t-shirt.. I ride a springer now and have no idea where that shirt is today.

Very nice video. I had a 1974 XLCH (kick start only, and right side shifter). I seem to remember a different oil tank, and an oil filter in front of the crankcase, instead of inside the tank. In the early days of electric starters on Sportsters, Harley Davidson made Sportsters that had both electric and kick starters in case the electric starter did not work. Charging systems were not the same as they are today, and the batteries for the electric starters were much larger than on the kickers. That meant that XLH (electric) and XLCH (kicker) Sportsters had different oil tanks and filters. Your video brought back old memories. I still have a set of points and a clear plug for the timing inspection hole. Keep the videos coming.

Thanks for the video. I have a 71xlh 900. I did not know that the oil in the primary should be the same weight as the engine oil. I use straight 60 weight in NC. Looking for a video that shows, from start to finish, how to change front rocker box cover gasket. No shops near me will touch an Ironhead!
@Keepitmooving
@Keepitmooving 10 ай бұрын
It should be engine oil 50w, 60w or 70w depending in the weather even the shop manual says this, especially since they didn't have valve seals so they won't burn oil as much then thinner would more likely should be for older bikes thicker they need newer harleys are different. 80w or maxima vtwin gear & case oil is good, and rocker boxes bro just take it apart there's no many videos especially the guy @tatromachine he shows everything 🤟

Hey! Greetings to you in Northern Europe, and thanks for the comment. Yes, it is an oil cooler on the front. It was an add-on. They did not come with oil coolers. The Ironhead sportster is not a hard bike to find for sale here in the states, and they are often surprisingly cheap! Best of luck!

I was trying to work out what year that bike is when it occured to me that it doesn't matter as they hardly changed in the twenty-one year period you cover in the headline. My guess is late seventies going on the front brake calipers which were used from about 1978 I think - and don't get on my case here folks, I have a Sporty ('06) and a Dyna ('10) and I love 'em both !

Well 69 back had left side break pedal right side shift. But yes AMF used the same engine design. Personally, I am glad to have a 69 in the garage. Before cats and unleaded gas, just an air pump with magnets and wires. Can be bored out so many times a guy could probably skip oil and get a decade out of her (joke). No need for battery or computer, just mechanical power. A record setter and a great apocalypse bike.

We're in a similar situation. Priority 1. Flush out anything needed, kerosene through the oil bag with return line removed. Priority 2. Time it, the retard it just a bit for this first start. Priority 3. Adjust carb to known good settings or make damb sure no ones touched it. Then kick the daylights out of her. Those old dry clutches are weird. My advice is to go ahead and try to bump start BUT DONT FREAK IF CLUTCH SLIPS. Just go back to kicking, enrich or use starter fluid as needed. This is my boys account so Idk, but I will let you know how it goes. I AM FLUSHING WITH KE0ROSENE TONIGHT, then I am going to inspect check valve as it was a suggested issue before crash and blow out oil lines. To head as they are easy to remove. Then I will flush it a0gain with kerosene, then open the drain ports and oil bag and maybe blow some air around and let it sit for a day. Tomorrow I will keep adding oil to maintain 1/2 the bag in between trying to kick start. . Goal is to have it running by 2022 and rideable by March. MAIN FOCUS IS GETTING IT RUNNING, I flush so I know there's no harmful debris first, but f the clutch, f the brakes, f the linkage, f everything not needed to safely start and idle your bike. THIS INCREASES YOUR DIAGNOSIS POWER AND SHT WORKS DIFFERENTLY AT ~1000rpm

@@westonmalone3205 mmo is marvels mystery oil or something right? Some new fangled stuff? Couldn't speak to on it myself, My iron-head gets 4 fluids Oxygen Leaded gas (or synthetic alternatives when needed) Kendall Sae-50 And grease. Some kerosene for flushes once in a blue moon and that's it. Everything else for me comes down to tuning, fitment, gaskets, elbow grease, a shop manual, and critical thought. I don't trust mechanics so it goes slow and steady, but I know exactly whats been done and why. EDIT Also, I've come to the conclusion not to use starting fluid on Harleys (as wasted spark occurs during intake on the front) I don't know for sure, but it seems to me it would could light up the carb. (Did that long ago by timing the wrong cylinder, easy to put out but no fun)
