Opening the bushings up with an adjustable reamer is not a bad idea. New fork tubes seen to be a few thousands larger diameter. There is a guy in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania that redid my tube assemblies. The guy is Bills Custom Cycle. I bought new chromed 33.4 tubes from him. I brought my 1968-69 lower legs with the new fork tubes to him. He pulled the old bushings out, sent lower legs out to be rechromed, installed new bushings, reamed to fit fork tubes, and shipped them back to me. He has a Harley Museum, and he has bought out many Harley dealerships. He is the only one that I know that has the factory tools for the 33.4 forks. On adjustable reamers, they should not be turned backwards. Those are two good looking Sportsters you have there. The Gold one looks to be a 1970 XLH. 1972 and older are my favorite Sportsters. Good to see them stock. I'm looking forward to more videos from you.

In regards to your question about the progressive rear shocks, yes they do make a difference and are to a degree better then the original shocks. They are built a little heavier when you compare them side by side with the original shock and they give you a softer ride. Sure, there are better much more expensive shocks out there, but in keeping with the original look, these progressive shocks fit the bill. In, combination with the upgraded dampers in my stock front end I have to say, this is the best riding and handling iron head I ever owned. The new Avon’s helped as well. I have some videos coming out with this particular build.

Great vid and nice work. My '69 XLCH needs front end work, forks are rusty and the cow bells are pretty nasty. And even though the forks go up and down I'm sure the action is nothing like it was in 1969. Forking By Frank's website is up. Phone call went to voicemail so I submitted for a quote on the site for a set of tubes. Waiting for a response. Nice bikes and thanks for putting in the time and work. Subscribed.

Thank you for your feedback, I didn’t know forking by frank was still in business? If you can get a set grab them because they are ground to the proper O.D dimension WITH the chrome tubes if you go that route. This way you won’t need those rusty cow bells. If I knew they where in business I would have bought a set and would have avoided having to ream out my good brass bushings to make the new ones fit because they where not ground under size for the chrome plating thickness. The O.D should measure 3.111 to 3.112 just like the stock 33.4 front tubes. I hope you can score a set of forking by frank tubes, they are made right! I appreciate this particular comment!

Thank you, I really appreciate it! I haven’t featured the 70 XLH on my channel yet but that project will definitely be coming. It’s one of my favorite restorations. Stay tuned and I will do a video series on this particular bike. Thank you for watching and your kind comment? Take care my friend.

The chrome tube sliders you see on my black stock 1968 XLCH are from “forking by frank”. A American company that machined them properly. They grounded the O.D. Under size to about 1.307 so the chrome plating thickness would bring them up to the correct factory specs of 1.310 to 1.311 this way their would be no need to ream out these lower leg bushings which really takes unnecessary bushing material out of a all ready thin brass bushing wall. I would have gladly bought a new set from “forking by Frank” but I couldn’t find them, they may have went out of business a while back. So, like you I was stuck buying a non spec tube that was chromed over without being ground first! I am a precision machinist and mechanical engineer by trade so making my own brass bushings and specialty tools are no problem. Actually I could easily machine the whole tube set from scratch to factory spec very easily and use the OD grinder to finish the proper factory size and send them out for chrome. But, for the price of these it wasn’t worth it because of the high cost of chrome plating these days not to mention material and my machine time. Yes, the Gold XLH is indeed a 1970 I restored. I have more content coming related to these vintage iron heads so stay tuned! I definitely appreciate you watching and leaving your comments. I hope you subscribe and leave a thumbs up as well! Take care and have a great New year!

I have bought a few sets of fork tubes from "forking by frank" over the years myself. I don't know if they are still in business either.

I hope you saved the chrome upper tube covers and any other parts you replaced to stay with the bike. It is very original and a shame to change it!

@@jerryjackson5939 actually I always save the stock parts and yes I saved these chrome cowbells. If I never mentioned it you would have never noticed them absent. The ONLY reason Harley put these on was to cover the ugly hard chrome tubes between the lower and upper trees. Other than that, they serve no function, just covers. I guarantee if Harley had chrome plated the upper portion of the fork tubes They wouldn’t have used these. In my particular case, it was actually cheaper to buy a brand new set of chrome plated fork tubes than send the cow bells out for re chroming. Since forking by frank is out of business, and they used to ground the O.D of the tubes to 1.308 and then add the chroming process which brought them to the proper 1.311 to 1.312 O.D that would have been perfect for the brass bushings I.D of the lower leg brass bushings, so the tubes have a nice slip fit sliding up and down with no binding. However the chrome aftermarket tubes I bought were not properly ground under size. Therefore the chrome plating they applied made the tubes 1.315 to 1.316. Which is oversized. That is why I was forced to ream out the lower leg bushings for a proper fit. Looking back. It’s a shame forking by frank went out of business because I would have avoided all of this… next time I will simply bite the bullet and pay the cost to re chrome my old pitted cow bells. As it is, everything worked out, but I’m not happy about taking so much meat out of my lower legs brass bushings. That is the lesson! Two ways to skin a cat I guess. The good thing I now have a nice adjustable reamer to rebuild my other lower legs with new brass bushings.

@@Michael-st1hl oh, I would notice it ;). Stock Harley tubes in the 1950's and 1960's had no chrome on them. The tubes you took off your bike were newer than 1968. In the 50's/60's they had a coating on the steel tubes, kind of like parkerizing but not exactly. Anyway, you are correct that is the reason for the upper tube covers....to cover the dull finish.
