Everyone has a Harley parts list and one of the most important parts is always somewhere near the bottom. Suspension isn't flashy or cool but it does control everything from braking, to acceleration and overall handling. Expensive, absolutely. Worth it? Every penny. Convincing yourself or someone else to spend that money on suspension is tough if you haven't experienced a bike with a fully upgraded suspension. Harley hasn't always been know for top tier factory suspension but they've gotten a lot better after 2016 for the Sportster and 2017 for all other models. While the factory suspension is leaps and bounds above the past it still isn't anywhere close to a performance suspension upgrade.

I am happy with my 1988 Electra Glide Classic air suspension front and back. I did need to get the forks rebuild but they were 30+ years old. No service has been done on the back that I know of. I check the air pressure every couple of months and notice no air leakage. My ride is smooth and stable.

That's really impressive that the air suspension is still holding on a 88 model, well they used to build them better in that time period too. I would pull them forks down and just go through them with new seals and bushings. That front end will be night and day after a good service!

100% agreement. I made myself a believer by just putting a set of Legends on my 2015 Limited a few years before I traded it off. That is the one "part" that I REALLY wish I would have taken off and put on the replacement 2009 Ultra with factory suspension. Everything else on the Limited was mostly factory, save the slip ons, and that money was the best investment I made on a 2 up touring bike.

Harley-Davidson used to use the fvq paid very quickly shocks at Honda used because they were cheap and they hold the seat and the tire away from each other and then you go by a new set of shocks when you bought a try if you had a good set of Girling shock absorbers and good tires and a good chain and a good battery not just cheap stuff in order to make the price low and make the customer pay for it later on to change the inadequate part.

I've installed several sets of lower shocks on others FLT bikes so that I have a few sets of almost new HD factory take-off shocks. They work fine for me. I did remove the plastic air lines and installed individual Schraeder valves on each shock. Progressive Suspension cartridge fork inserts replaced the original innards.

I spent a lot of money on Progressive Suspension top of the line shocks and spring combinations with assistance from Progressive. No matter what I tried I could get a good ride, this was with my 2013 CVO Road King. What I wound up with was a Chrome 12" air shock Brand X that cost $112.00 with shipping. With 5 psig setting not only is it a comfortable ride but the bike sits nice and low. When I bought and build my 2015 St Glide with the 120St motor I automatically installed those shocks. I found it to be an even better ride due to the 16" rear tire higher profile than the 18" CVO tire. I've always said the price is not always the answer to a problem. It's been 8 years for the CVO and 7 years with the St Glide with no problems and no leaking oil or air on both.

Hello, I realize this is off topic, but I was wondering what is your opinion on Amsoil transmission fluid? First time servicing my2013 Road King classic at home. Is trans fluid ok as opposed to regular oil, or gear oil? Also wondering which is the best way to check the trans fluid level? Manual says on level ground on jiffy stand, threads not screwed in. Apparently many people check it in different ways, so was wondering how you do it? Any help is appreciated. Thanks
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 2 жыл бұрын
I always check mine by what the manual recommends when it comes to the primary and transmission. Now for the oil I don't fill it all the way to the top, just 3/4 below full when the bike is fully hot. When it comes to dedicated fluids in the transmission and primary it's really down to personal preference. I run Amsoil 20w50 for engine, transmission and primary, it works great and I don't have to buy separate products. Some will argue about that, but the Vrod and every other motorcycle out there shares oil with the engine, transmission and primary and they have for years and years. It comes down to how your clutch and transmission feel to you, it might feel better with dedicated products or 20w50 full synthetic. Either way it won't hurt anything it's just personal preference.

Yes, yes, yes ! Out of all things you can do to your bike; Suspension really is the beginning of it all! GixxerFoo is so right about that ! I can attest to this! I bought a 2007 Sportster Custom, getting it for a great price. First ride I hated it, with the suspension being the culprit. I went with Progressive front and rear. Completely different bike. I honestly never ridden a Harley so smooth. No more bottoming out the rear going over tracks or having a pogo stick up front when braking/acceleration. Still have the OEM upfront on the Street Glide Special, but went with Legend in the rear. Once again, game changer.

Harley-Davidson encourages neglectful changing of fork oil because the forks on a Harley do not have drain plugs making you disassemble the fork s which is time consuming and expansion. Changing the fork oil on my 650 Triumph my 1965 TR6 takes all of 15 minutes you take the bike outside you take the plug out you pump the front end you plug it up you put the recommended amount of oil in it you screw the plug back in and you do the same for the other side and you are done.

Great video. Engine then suspension. But really A and 1A. To get the engine running at peak performance and upgrade the suspension, that makes Harley's come alive. I went with Terry Cable shocks. Night and day between those and the stock air shock. On the front forks, all I had to do was change the damper. Springs were fine. Took out the mushy ride and that fork dive on braking. None of that. Now it tracks like a Ferrari in the twisties. Yet super comfortable running down the road. Cost was pretty amazing. Shocks ran around 650 and the front fork damper is right around 100 bucks or so. Or was. Just another cost of having a Harley. Yea, it's worth it.

Honestly short shot look great, they are loud, but they will kill your power. They are not the best performance exhaust out there, the big shot with the X pipe is the way to go. You might see how you like the standard baffle they come with and the baffle is removable on those. What a lot of people don’t realize is that shocks and suspension that is un-equal to the overall load including gear and passengers, it can be seriously detrimental to one’s health. My wife and I were riding on our 2015 Yamaha Road Star, not realizing that the stock suspension was built for a small Chinese man. That bike was so under sprung that every time we leaned over at all we were hitting frame with pavement. Unfortunately my ignorance of that situation peaked when my wife and I were on a scenic piece of pavement out in the middle of nowhere and hit a bump causing the frame to come in direct contact with the road causing the shock to go up through my back and fracture my tail bone. Needless to say, my wife held my head as I stood there on the side of the road and cried. I swore up-and-down that I would never own another motorcycle with a softail suspension or mono shock again. Thinking that Harley upped their game and improved the suspension on the new 2017 models I was excited to purchase my new Road King…. Needless to say, the new suspension front and rear were seriously lacking and now My Road King now sports a full legend front and rear suspension upgrades the very best thing I could ever purchase for my bike.

That's scary! Glad you kept it up though! It really takes some time to dial in a suspension right or your every day. Best thing you can do is when you get it setup the way you like is record those setting to make sure you get it back exactly the way you had it. But with the legends you have on there it will handle a lot and very well too. My experience with Legends is you don't have to be as perfect with it as you would with just getting a good preload setting with the stock suspension.

I got a remote oil filter set up from DK and had a major oil leak and when I questioned DK about their install instructions they got vague and evasive. I won’t get anything else from them. They’re just a couple of guys working out of a small shop .

You would think with the Ridiculously Over Priced bikes harley would have built the bike with the Best suspension systems!

They really should, to me it's pretty bad when Indian comes with Fox suspension and Harley uses Showa and not even high dollar Showa.

Harley uses weak fork springs with less progressive winding to give a plush ride. The factory fork oil is garbage!! Rear shocks suffer from the same thin oil for dampening and bad internal valving to control compression and rebound. Factory air shocks are not very good either. Bigger maintence issue is servicing the fork oil and rebuilding the forks and rear shocks. Fork and shock oil becomes contaminated and breaks down. The 41mm touring forks with Progressive springs are a great improvement with upping the fork oil weight to 15w. New fork bushings are required. Rear shocks and air shocks need the oil changed more frequently they have less fluid and become contaminated quicker. Just saying!!

Since you said it I'll just say all Harley fluid is junk in my opinion. I've found quite a bit of difference in just changing fork oil out to a high performance and quality aftermarket fork oil. What you choose to use is personal but I really like Amsoil Shock Therapy, that was a inexpensive solution for better performance.
