Getting back to you. Did what you showed on your video. Drilled to 1/8" hole in the back of speedometer. Had to remove glass ,fog left a film, so had to let it soak in vinegar for about half hour. And got it cleaned. Rode to work then home at 2:30 pm that is when it would fog up the worst. And no fog at all can see everything now!! Thanks again for the video. Ride safe and enjoy.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I would liked to have seen where you placed the holes. I believe it’s critical to not hit the circuit board, so some precision drilling, and not too deep is needed.

With respect to your video, if this two holes should fix the problem, I wonder why HD did not bring out a service bulletin to all HD dealers world wide, to drill two little holes in the speedometer housing. Done in 15 minutes. This problem exists since years. Many customers are claiming it. HD can't find a solution, because it is to complex. There is the heat from the engine, the sun thats heats up the speedo, if you ride and the cold air cools the speedo, moisture will be inside. And there are also some important points that have to considered. The electronic inside the speedo housing has to be protected agains water, that might flow into the speedo housing. Many owners clean the bike with water or even worth with a steam gun riding in the rain. The electronic has to be protected. I worked as a bike technician and owned a Road King and now a Softail. Both bikes had/have this problem with the moisture in the speedo. I do not think that two holes are the solution. It might work if you ride your bike only in dry conditions, but including all circumstances it will fail and you might risk a even worth damage on the speedo than the moisture.
@RidersUnited
@RidersUnited Жыл бұрын
Solution is not complex. Speedo should be sealed in dry (not moist) conditions to prevent condensation due to change of temperature - like watches they are exposed to all kind of temperatures and conditions and don’t fog because air sealed inside is dry. Read all comments under my video and you will see yourself what people say after drilling the holes. Touring models have holes in gauges by the way straight from factory. Hope that helps. It is easy solution that works. If water flows into speedo housing it means whole motorcycle is underwater and I will worry about many other things than speedo at such point. Speedo is protected by housing so no water from riding in the rain will get in. I rode thousand of miles in all kind of condition and never had a problem.

Rode my 2019 FLHCS over 200 miles today in South Florida during high heat and humidity which included two downpours! Performed the modification as suggested and my speedometer did not fog up at all!!!!! When doing the modification, I wrapped several layers of duct tape around the 1/8 inch drill bit to limit the drill bit travel instead of using a dowel rod to control drilling depth. The speedometer can now breath without fogging! Thank you for a great fix!!!!

Just watched your video and had a go on my 2018fatboy. The only thing I did different was unplug my speedo from behind the speedo itself this way it made it a very quick way of removing the whole unit. This way you can turn it over which made it very easy to work on . Thankyou heaps as this has fixed my speedo. No fogging at all any more even after a long day in the hot sun . Thanks again Ray.

My Heritage here in Ireland has this issue. I will give it a try. I would recommend using a drill stop attached to the drill bit. A stop is commonly provided with dowel joint kits and prevents the drill from going too deep by clamping a stop on the bit, as I fear that an unfortunate slip could damage the speedo. I like your video - but try talking less and ‘getting down to business’ faster - I fast forwarded. Maybe rather than talk about the problem on camera show photos/videos of the issue and voice over.... just a thought. Liked & subscribed 👍

I like the idea of venting the area that contains the moist air. BUT, the drilling operation is extremely dodgy. The assembly of the units can be different for different bikes. The microprocessors can located differently increasing the chance of damage from the drill or plastic swarf getting into the unit.

Yes I do my best to be more concise lately as it is part of learning for me as well. Location of the holes doesn’t matter much as long as you allow moisture to escape. In the video you will see where I drilled mine it is described @ 8:58 min mark. Just go slow as plastic is soft and you dont want to hit internals with sharp drill

This video was to long with many unnecessary explaining. Off with the speedometer, drill a hole, make sure not to hit something inside and that's it. Personally I would contact the Harley dealer and address the issue, I'm sure they have a solution for this, and you don't need to worry about the warranty on your bike when you do modifications yourself.

Thank you for watching. I am still learning how to do that whole YT. Unfortunately HD do not have solution for this issue and even if they replace the speedo it will fog again. As far as length some people prefer extra info if not it is possible to skip to part that is of the interest. Hope this helps.
