💭 With the core of the bike mostly done, I needed to do something about this gas tank. Previously, I painted a few parts for Sportster and they came out like hot garbage. Learning from some of my mistakes, I went back and fixed most of it. In theory, I should have a better start this time, right? Less mistakes, more forward progress. Yes.. and no. While this would turn out better than the first time around, still some questions on how I could better this. More lessons here, but the tank will turn out better than before. One step closer.

Appreciate everyone being supportive! Definitely want to get bettter. I really like spraying with the cans despite them costing more compared to a gun.

Ausgezeichnete Arbeit. Vielen Dank, Herr Branden Bicasso. Mit professionellen Grüßen, Michael Frithjof Müller

hi,nice job considering its made with cans. very difficult to have perfect surface with it. few advices for future paint job. after the tank come back with bondo repairs, apply a good coat of primer.then wet sand it. find the spots with imperfections ,spray very light touches of black paint on it to see them. and on that ,you add another coat of primer. wet sand it again, more where black paint is. time for last coat of primer. wet sand it with your finest sand paper. clean it with soft wet rag. first light coat of paint, cross the sprays to be even, not straight lines, more like a grid. wet sand it with 2000 or 3000 sand paper . second coat of paint, let dry a little, and last coat . then,it's time for the clear coats . first light coat ,to see if there is any reaction withe previous coats. small waiting time to let it dry a little. then start the other coats of clear ,crossing the "passes "(not sure of this word in english...) until you get that professionnal finish. remember that you can always fix any bad spot by wet sanding with high grain ,and cover with a new coat.

A lot of great tips. I wanted to finish it all that day. I realize now a major difference in spray cans and guns is needing to do post work to get the proper finish. I'm learning though!

Primer should be done a day or two before. You can spot any imperfections in the tank and correct them before you lay down your base. Looks like you're applying the clear coat too slow and a tad too close in some areas. This is what's leading to the non-mirror like finish and the runs. The trash and the dust can be prevented by buying a small harbor freight tent and wetting the floor to keep the dust from flying around. Hope this helps. Patience is key.

2 other suggestions: (1) Grab some metal coat hangers instead of zip ties. If the hanger slides along your fence pole, try and make it level. If not, place a layer of blue tape on the fence pole to prevent the metal coat hanger from sliding. (2) I use 0000 steel wool in between coats to smooth out the heavy spots. Just make sure you blow off or use a tack cloth to remove any loose steel wool fibers.

I'm thinking next time I'll do that. Prime everything one day, check how everything laid and wet sand it. I did that the first time around and got really good results. Didn't do any wet sanding this time so hey, lessons learned from both situations!

Like others have said, spend more time on the prep before the color coat. After the primer dries spray a contrasting guide coat and sand it back to the primer, this will reveal any low spots or scratches. Repeat the process until your prime coat is even. The more time you spend on prepping the better your final finish will be. Pretty good job otherwise.

The only experience I have in painting is on guitars. And wet sanding is a big part of getting that mirror finish. Well sanding lots of sanding. I like this channel because I’m not a professional. I’m just a regular dude. That wants to learn how to do things.

Patience and preparation is key to getting a show finish, lightly Misting a guide coat (contrasting color)over primer and sanding the guide coat with 400 grit and then 600 grit will show and remove all of the imperfections and orange peel in the primer before base coat this will insure your base is as smooth as possible before clear coating. Use the 400 to smooth the surface and then the 600 to remove the 400 scratches, these can be done either wet or dry sanding. These steps seem to take a lot of time but the finish you will achieve will more than make up for the time spent. You can do some research on guide coating here on youtube to see how it's done if you have questions on it. There are a lot of informative videos out on it.

You can salvage it by 3000 wet sand, then wheel it out with a fine polish.

Right. There's another video coming where I fix the clear. I'm pretty decent at polishing so it will look better.

Painting with rattle cans is a game of patience. You definitely did a good job, but that probably should’ve taken more like a week rather than one day

I think the problem was not letting the primer dry enough. Maybe 30 minutes to an hour to let the primer dry completely. Learned a lot, though!

Remember that in a professional paint booth, the conditions are controlled. Some paint booths use heat lamps to bake the paint on. Keep up the great work.

It's not perfect but no paint jobs are! I hate to paint. When I do I like to shoot the edges and details 1st, then blend the large areas into them. A final heavy coat usually works for me. Wet sanding the primer can help, and now, wet sanding should remove the orange peel. Most body shops do a lot of that.

Considering everything you did okay. You’re right, it would have been cheaper to have bought a different gas tank after tabulating everything.

We both just have to practice more. I honestly like the cans more than a gun. Less clean up and it's just fun imo.

You gotta move your hands a lot faster when painting. Also, you can't start or end the spray stream OVER the object you are painting. You have to start and end your pass OFF of the object you are painting. Do MORE passes, not SLOW passes. ;)

Great video and the other comments have covered most of what i was thinking while watching your video. i am by no means an expert. prep and wet sanding will help to catch/ correct imperfections. another youtuber that is pretty good at cans is Classic Octane, specifically his painting video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bdx0ebik1s_GgoE.html).

Sorry, one more thing. You should wet sand by hand the tank (all painted parts) after priming. ♟️ test spray on cardboard before starting. Just advice from an old school race/custom car builder with no tools. 🤣 ✌️

Get a four person portable tent as a home paint both. ♟️ Always use the same stroke when painting. Wax on or wax off all in the same direction.
