I've found I can use quite the variety of food plastics, from cookies to brownies, my personal favorite is a Safeway single serve cake dish. About 3 cubic inches of individual terrariums. I also love take out containers from red Robin, those work too! As for cups I collect a bunch from my family's Starbucks habit, including the lids from waters, I have a good system going! Also as a safer alternative to burning holes in cups, I recommend using an ice pick, scissors, or any blade to poke, or manually drill holes. Much less toxic but a little more time consuming!

Also, you can save fast food plastic drink cups! I have a number of tomato plants that love being in Taco Bell cups haha. And a good succulent propagation tray could be Tupperware's that you can't find the tops to or the little container a set of 12 Cinnabon's from Taco Bell come in (which is also oddly cute). I also use the container strawberries come in, but so much dirt falls out of the big side holes. I started saving anything that could be used to grow plants in, and not only did I realize how much plastic I was going through, but it's also nice to have anything I want on hand when I have a crazy idea for plants!

Agree! It's great to keep in mind that plastic isn't actually recycled. For my prop boxes, I use plastic containers from all around that I get from other purposes -- mostly my meal boxes (I wish they had a reuse program..)

Just dropping in to say Jeremiah from roots and refuge had a great method for putting holes in plastic cups. They leave them stacked and get a long drill bit and just drill a hole in all the cups in one go. Quick, easy, no fumes! Idk if you’ve tried that already but I just wanted to share for anyone else reading the comments

Yeah, cutting off "garbage pieces" from the stems will definitely slow down development. Energy is stored in leaves as well as stems and will be drawn out from them for growing new roots and leaves.

I am having an issue where every time I create one of these boxes with the moss, my plants mold. can you advise on this?

@@jillianh4624 Harli has a lot a lot plants and she propagates several of one plant so many times some plant will rot, but if you want to prevent rot you can let the cuttings dry out and callus over, maybe for 1-2 hours, you can put the plant in front of a fan so it can dry faster, when the open cuts are dry you can mix horticultural lime with water, form a paste, and use that paste to rub it on the wounds, it prevents rot and nasty fungus and bacteria getting into the plant, you can also squeeze out the sphagnum moss more if it’s too damp, aerate the bin more often as well, maybe every other day, for safety, hope this helps!

@@jillianh4624 no prob! If you have rare plants, try air layering them! 100% success rate! It’s basically encouraging roots before even cutting the plants, when it has roots, all you have to do is put it in a pot with soil and acclimate it to its new pot, voila! You have a new plant! Hehe

Moss propagation was kinda a topic for mainly last (or like 10 months ago) year and I'm so happy seeing that people still use it, maybe even more than when everyone was buzzing about it.

Thanks so much for sharing your prop box tips Harli! I started some and have sold rooted cuttings and now trade plants for store credit at the local plant store. I've gotten over $600 in store credit from just 2 big storage bins! That's a great return for about $75 of mostly re-usable materials. Removing the leaves means the cutting only has the energy in the stem to fuel growth. Cuttings with leaves can photosynthesize to produce energy to fuel new growth. It would be interesting to compare how long cuttings take to produce new growth with and without leaves. It seems it would be safer to leave a longer stem for the node to draw energy from if you remove the leaf. Clearly this is working for Harli so its not wrong! Her setup is pretty plush and she may be ok with it taking longer since she has so much going on and is going for the max # of plants for sale. I want things to be ready for sale quickly so I can have fewer boxes taking up space. My wet stick props take much much longer to push out new growth than nodes with leaves and the new growth is much smaller. I don't use Liquidirt though! I just bought some and am going to start using it like you Harli! Your plants are all just so deep green. My plants grow but tend to be lighter green than I would like. I'll let you know the difference.

Thank you. Last year I saw your propagation by box and tried it on some rose cuttings in a small food container. I put them under a tree outside on the north side of the house. 4 weeks later one cutting had roots and I planted it into a a well established rich mulch bed. and it flowered first year. Can't wait to see if it survived the hard north winter. Thank you for this easy method.

Prop boxes are my fav way to prop. I get Hoya to root in 2 weeks in there and takes 6 months in a glass of water!! Love your videos and always enjoy you potting vids. Hugs!!

Last time you propagated a scindapsus exotica, I tried propagating in moss without the leaves and it's working so well! They're pretty much all rooted (I have maybe between 10 and 20), only one or 2 have rotted, but I just got rid of them asap and now I have leaves! I need more experience though. If you're drilling holes in bins, you'll probably have more success with drilling holes towards the top of the side instead of on the lid. That allows for air flow without as much water evaporating straight out the top

I use recycled apple sauce cups. They are translucent (which I love so I can keep an eye on the roots) and just the right size for starter plants!

Using the cups is so smart. I have had a prop box of just random plants. Sometimes it hard to untangle the roots and I'm always so afraid of breaking the roots. Going to need to go to the store and re do my prop box.

I went to a new plant shop this weekend and they had the most beautiful Syngoniums! Finally got my first one (and also fell in love with the Syngonium Mojito, so need to start saving up for my second one). I cant wait for mine to get nice and comfortable in my home and start growing so I can propagate my own and share this lovely plant! I love your prop box technique! I followed one of your past videos for propagating hoya, and now I have a bunch of hoya cuttings! Luckily I made the prop box just in time because they avoided a massive mealybug infestation that occurred on my main hoya plant. The main plant is doing better now but there are lots of gaps in the plant due to the leaves dropping. I guess that just means I can propagate more hoya!

Just came back here to say that I watched this and used this method along with soil and pon for a massive amount of cuttings I was gifted and this is by far the best method! I’m usually a water prop kind of gal but these cuttings were mostly Hoya and I wanted to experiment. I will for sure keep doing this. With clear containers I LOVE that you can actually see when they’re well rooted! Thanks for posting this.

I do tomatoes in red solo cups and I use a drill bit for my plastic cups. I can drill about 4-5 cups at a time. Works great! Even with the small cups, you could do it with a smaller drill bit.

I had my caudex plants, stephania erecta, in leca and one in chunky rocky soil. Honestly leca was super easy. It’s important to bury them almost halfway in the substrate and keep them in hight humidity and high light. I’ve found once the leaves come in, the higher the humidity the more vine like and leggy they get, the lower the humidity the closer together the leaves grow. Just something i noticed in my care. ❤

Instead of using a soldering iron to put holes in your cups take a scissor and gently clip at the bottom "corner" of the cup, I make 2 slices. I do that for my veggie starter cups, works great. I really enjoy your channel, I propagate shrubs in the spring and summer and now I am getting hooked on houseplants!!

Hi Harli, I've tried the sphagnum moss with some props and I love it!! I feel like my cuttings root faster, I love that the cuttings stay humid, and I generally love the look of moss as a medium!! I'm even thinking of growing plants permanently in sphagnum moss!!❤️🥰

If you don’t have a drill or soldering iron, you can just take your scissors and snip a couple of slices off of the bottom rim of any plastic cup. Works great!

Harli, I think you're onto something with the sphagnum (obviously haha). I've done water and soil prop, and the soil works great for heartier plants for me (like pothos, peperomia, avocado trees, & some philos), but the more delicate plants can't take it. I love Rex Begonia and am currently attempting to prop some leaves in mostly perlite with a tiny bit of soil mixed in for moisture retention and I don't know if it's going to take (small nursery pots inside freezer bags). Sphagnum definitely seems like the happy "medium" 😉 for these kinds of plants tho. I've got my grow closet all set up, now just need to order some nice sphag. Thanks fo sharing!

I had the same question. There is no mention of temperature used for propagation in the video. Temperature is critical in the amount of time required to root.

I really like this method with the cups, usually, I just put the sphagnum moss directly in the plastic bin and put the cuttings on top of it. I also noticed that keeping the box somewhere warm helps. Also, the grow lights work wonders in accelerating the growth

benjiplant gave a tip about putting a layer of charcoal on the bottom to prevent mold. That's what he uses for terrariums and he also propagates some of his plants in his terrariums I believe. I've been excited to try this myself and am even more now ✌️

Your camera has a REALLY good autofocus when you bring something up close to the lense! You stress about it not focusing but you're doing a good job! xD ❤️ I recently got a New Sony Camera too and i'm still shocked how much better cameras have gotten since i was in Highschool lol!

Since I don't have a soldering iron yet... I heat a 2-3 inch iron nail n make holes in plastic... Takes longer than a soldering iron but it works

Hey Harli and everyone!! I have some plants that I received rooting in moss. I have the worst time with moss, as things tend to rot on me. I usually prop in perlite or pumice and have had no issues at all. When I'm moving them from the moss to my airoid mix I'm completely afraid of the stress and damage I feel like I'm causing to the roots trying to get the moss off. I keep hearing as much as possible needs to be removed or the moss will cause the root ball to rot once it's in soil. These are some of my favorite (and expensive) wishlist plants. How do you do it?! You can also take a long metal screwer and get it hot with a lighter..Stack 4-5 cups at a time and burn them all at once. I used to do the one by one wood burner thing but it takes too long.

Currently doing an experiment with my syngonium fantasy. I have 11 leaf cuttings, and 7 node cuttings. Nodes are definitely in sphag, I’m doing a couple leaves in sphag, some in water, and I don’t trust perlite so that’s it. 3 month update: out of the two methods, my node cuttings were by far the most reliable. They did take a bit longer, though, but I have two leaf cuttings in water that haven't developed a single root while they have retained their leaves. However, my node cuttings in sphag in a box have more roots, and have developed really nice variegation on the first leaves. I didn't add nutrients to reduce the variables in the experimetn. However, the issue is that my best cuttings were leaf cuttings in water, but I had less of them. So do with that info what you will.

Spaghnum definitely is my go-to. I feel like I'm cheating using it in comparison to other proping medias. Especially when you add a tiny bit of nutrients to it 🙂

I have such a bad habit of cramming spag into cups or moss poles to the point of compaction. I love rooting in leca in glass jars. But I’m definitely going to try your method.

I started a prop box with moss and it was good for like two days. It was in a very sunny spot. But on the third day it turned to mold. I don’t know what I did wrong, maybe too much water. Thank you for the tips! I will try again

Too much sun will make it too hot and destroy the plants. Try the same spot but don't seal the lid, set on top a bit turned so the corners are open and heat and moisture can escape. Or better yet try a bright LED light instead. I use a 2000 lumen shop light sitting on the top of a clear lid. When I first started I also didn't seal the lid, I set it on top twisted a bit so moisture could escape until I could put the lid on and leave it without water condensation on the lid and dripping back down. If you don't seal the lid you are unlikely to rot things unless you don't give it enough light. I have some in very little light that still don't rot, they don't grow much but they don't rot. Too much light literally baking the plants turns them to mush and THEN the mold grows on the dead plants.

I do the cup and moss propagation but have never put them in a bin once they’re all in their cups. Definitely going to give that a try!

You should use mushroom monotub filters. They allow air exchange without letting pathogens in, and they keep the humidity inside at the same time. They're called synthetic filter discs.

You could use a power drill to drill drainage holes in the cups if you don't want to breathe the fumes from melted plastic from the soldering iron.

Also it help to allow the energy to go directly to the one or few leaves to nurture.also ist good to use the old leaves as a compose bin.adding it to the kitchen waste.vs.throwing it out.
