Thank you, while watching some of your other video’s,I’ve learned to use the perlite prop box method. I don’t propagate too often,but did make my Cebu Blue a great deal fuller with cutting I propagated using only perlite. Now, my sister has been giving me Hoya cutting and I’ve killed mostly all, I will try the perlite method 1st to avoid killing any other Hoyas cuttings in soil. I know you did show some of your Hoyas,but not sure if you spoke about the care for these finicky plants. Once again, thank you,for the information you provide. Cute pups

I love and appreciate your videos, thank you for your time and information. I tried just Perlite propagation, unfortunately it wasn't for me. I use several other ways though, mostly spag with a tiny amount of soil & perlite .50/50 spag & perlite. 50/50 soil & perlite...and occasionally for like say Alocasia corms, spag & soil. It's weird how some things work so awesome for one person, but is a total failure for others. Also with the added soil & perlite to the spag, it makes removing it from roots so much easier, and helps to stop nutrient deficiencies a lot, also it's a lot easier to transition to soil it seems (for me at least).

Perlite does not break up as easily as vermiculite. I like vermiculite as an additive to my potting substrata instead of vermiculite because it's water retention is better. Vermiculite leaves more space for air and to my mind, is better for rooting cuttings.

Great information! Do you let your cuttings harden off before putting them in the perlite? Also, what are the dimensions of your boxes? I have the same mat... what temp do you use? Is your water from the tap, filtered or bottled? I'm going to give this a go... I have a very large collection of Hoyas so for those not thriving, hard to propagate and the expensive Hoyas this sounds perfect. Thank-you! 🌹

The problem I found with perlite is the dust clogs the capillaries of the cuttings. My hydraengas got a film of perlite dust at the bottom when I had pressed them down and watered the pot . I had to pull my cuttings and wash my perlite twice this morning and every time it created a film floating on the surface. I cut the ends of my cuttings and put them in water which rehydrated the leaves. I have not had the same problem with mixtures, perhaps the dust attach to the other soil particles.

I am currently trying propagating succulents with single leaves sitting on top of soil. Do you recommend covering with a lid/plastic wrap similar to a prop box, or do you think it’s a bad idea? I’m considering this because I live in a very dry climate, however I don’t want to lose the progress my propagations have made.

It helps rinsing it. I rinse my perlie in a bucket in reverse osmosis filtered water. The dust settles at the bottom and the perlite is well saturated when I put it in the propagation container. The dust is left in the bottom of the bucket and only perlite with plenty of breathing space goes into the propagation container.

I haven't found spagnum moss to be very successful, especially with very small plants, like hoya mini belle. @@EverythingPlants I prop small cuttings and leafless nodes. I haven't rinsed the perlite and that hasn't mattered for me thus far. Larger cuttings go straight into water. @@EverythingPlants I only have a few different kinds collected. They are wonderful plants. I have one big mama I have had for over 30 years. Whem I brought her home a piece broke off in transport so I rooted it. Just a little while ago I combined the Mother and daughter together in a floor pot with a double half hoop trellis almost 4 foot tall. Three + foot sticking out of the pot. So far all is good. Both were so root bound and I just could not do bigger haging pots for them. I have the Bella and Wayetti Crimson Queen and Princess and A Tricolor which I have been told might be just a different name for the princess. Australis and a Curtiisi. A small Macrofila. They are all just cuttings except the Crimson Queen which I have had a couple years and my big mama carnosa. Then I just bought a Lacunosa and a Publicalix X Splash. My biggest question would be can you use those prop boxes outside in indirect sunlight. For example, I have a large canopy on my patio, and all of my plants do very well under it, as it has mosquito nets all the way around it, which act like a shade clothe for those plants that don't want direct sunlight on them. But those are outside plants, and I'm not sure if plants like anthurium's or alocasia's would prop okay out there in a prop box like this. I'm in SC. Thanks.

I've have never tried this, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. I would probably air it out more than I would if it was indoors. Maybe keep an eye on the temps in there as well....I'm not sure if the higher heat would affect the box at all. I'd say try something in there as a test....something that you wouldn't care if it died or not 🤣

Could you use the drained perlite water to water other plants? I don’t see an issue with it but am curious if you have any reasoning behind not using it.

Have you ever put succulents in your perlite propagation box to root? Does your perlite get green in spots (maybe mold?)
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 жыл бұрын
I have never tried this method as Ive always had really good success just sticking them into soil. The box humidity may be too high for succulents, but you can sure try it out. The green stuff is most likely algae.

Not when it is rooting in the propagation box. Just keep it lightly damp (no standing water at the bottom) and let them grow!

Can you put succulents in there too?

I never have...I'm not too sure how they would do with the constant higher humidity. They do very well just into soil.

@@EverythingPlants In the video i see all stem cuttings with leaves. I know some plants like watermelon peperomia can be propogated through just leaves and no stems. Will leaf cuttings like that work too?

I definitely don't see why you couldn't.....just make sure it has a top to seal in the humidity

How would you deal with the smell? I've done a perlite prop box in a plastic container and it always seem to smell (and rot) but whenever I've used a DIY glass cloche (big glass on top of smaller glass), I get no issues. It's just that the glass cloche holds so little compared to a box.

Mine doesn't smell at all....perhaps it has to do with your water?!?! Maybe there is some mineral in your water that causes this....thus is the only thing I can think of. Try using distilled water and see if that changes it.

Add peroxide 3%, mix 1 part peroxide to 4 parts water or higher. Plants love it, it’s basically water with extra oxygen atom.
