This is a discussion about what the terms of Linear and Ultra-Linear mean with respect to tube amplifiers. Once we understand the differences between the two, it should help with evaluating schematics and determine if they are truly ultra-linear. Transistor are discussed briefly and how they are not that dis-similar to design of tubes with regard to harmonics.

3000v… must be quite the choke or capacitor bank to filter that!

Howdy. Nice. I would like to comment though ... The even harmonics do not go away in PP in class AB. If the PP is run in class A then technically the even harmonics would cancel. The strong 2nd harmonic in tube amps most likely comes from the magnetization properties of the output transformer. Hysteresis is one factor. Another factor is the magnetic momentum. The acceleration of the magnetization during signal ascent will be "braked" and the retardation of the magnetization "boosted" during descent. These result in slimming of the ascent and fattening of the descent. In other words, the generation of the 2nd harmonic. Regards.

You are correct. In my video series: "Fender Deluxe Tweed 1959", the points you make are supported in see videos tagged: FD8 through FD10. Thanks!

@@deepblueharp Howdy again. About determining the load line. I would imagine it is alluring to think the load line should be in a 90 degree angle to the grid parabola at the work point. That need not be the case in my mind. I believe the point is that a, say, +-1 V grid deviation produves as equal deviations in the anode voltage as possible. I would think that unsymmetry produces odd harmonics. In high regards.
