I highly recommend the podcast Backstage at the Vinyl Cafe, each episode contains 2 episodes as well as some background stories on Stuart , it’s wonderful hearing. I’m a big fan of Diane Setterfield, I think Bellman and Black was her second book, and Once Upon A River her third, loved them all!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane with Stuart McLean. I first met him when he was assistant director at Kamp Kanawana, where I went every summer. His story telling was always the highlight of the week on CBC radio. I will have to go and re-read this book. I would love to suggest a really good book for you to read, my favourite of the year, called Astrid, by Canadian writer Cedar Bowers. It tells Astrid's story through the eyes of people she knew at various points of her life. Brilliantly written and engaging. Thanks for promoting Canadian Fiction!!! And I absolutely LOVED The Spoon Stealer! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Moby Dick was not my favourite reading but Stuart McLean I idolized. I attended his last performance before his diagnosis. What a writer and sense of humour!!

I loved listening to The Vinyl Cafe show on the CBC. Stuart McLean really was a Canadian treasure. I have to keep my eye out for those books at next summer’s garage sales. I believe he wrote more than one. Some of those stories around his encounters with that neighbour lady who seemed to be his nemesis were hilarious. Thanks for some great suggestions, The Thirteenth Tale sounds like a must read.

I watch the Vera series on KZfaq and would love to read the books! I used to enjoy the Vinyl Cafe here in the U.S. I love rereading certain books and understanding things that were beyond me before.

Love these segments! One of my favorite books was The Bone People by Keri Hulme. Very seldom do I buy a book that I've already read, give it away to someone and then buy it again, but I did with this one.

Vera❤ and the Shetland books ❤ - Both books are way better! You always have such good suggestions. I cant be the only one with pen and pencil next to my iPad and then off to my local Library or bookstore 😂

Dang, now I have to read The Thirteenth Tale lol. I just finished the Poisonwood Bible, which was such a good read - although very different from my path of reads. Thanks so much for these videos - lol I seem to hang on every work ;) Oh and btw, I love Stuart McLean, I recall his voice absolutely - heard many of his stories on the radio in the past. I'll be going to search youtube to revisit these! Thanks once again!

Excellent episode. Love the recommendations for books. A series of books set in Edwardian England by Edward Marston about railway detective is a good read .🇬🇧

Loved the episode! I had to read Moby Dick in high school. Didn't like it. Probably because my teenage brain didn't appreciate the immensity of it. I agree that rereading is powerful! The title I finished yesterday and Loved was "A True Account, Hannah Masury's Sojourn Amongst the Pyrates, Written By Herself," A Novel, by Katherine Howe. The writing was excellent! The story was great; it included some nods to Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. Happy reading, all! Our new kitten, Molly Christmas, watched you with me. She weighs just over one pound now! 💕

Loved The Thirteenth Tale and since it’s in my Audible Library from years ago, I will Re-read it now. Recommend all of Abraham Verghese’s work. They are among my favorites. A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles is a must read. Really enjoy your Harmony Reads. Oh, I read Moby Dick decades ago because I forced myself to - enough said 😁

Love the nerdy talk about when an author is from...I've never thought about that as mostly I read modern writers writing about the past. Very interesting! Marsali Taylor-The Shetland Sailing Mysteries- will intrigue you if you are enjoying Ann Cleeves Shetland series. The first shows are quite like the books then as time goes on there is definitely poetic license taken...they are still very good to watch though.

I have great memories of going to Stuart Maclean's annual Christmas concert which was full of great stories and he always introduced a new Canadian artist...miss those shows and Stuart. I recommend a book called The Only One Left by Riley Sager....it will keep you guessing until the end. Cheers!

You will love the Spoon Stealer, Janet. Lesley Crewe is from Nova Scotia, I think, so you might even get to meet the author someday, as she does book tours. Our book club reviewed this one when it was my turn and we all really enjoyed it. I love Shetland and Vera, so Anne Cleve is on my list to read. The other books sound great, but I will leave Moby Dick to you- had to read it in high school (when likely a was a lousy gauge of literature).

Great podcast, thanks ladies. I've just finished Winners by Fredrik Bachman (the author of A man called Ove), its completely different to Ove, set around two ice-hockey towns in Sweden, highly recommend, very gritty with really believable characters. Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 x

There are a couple of Graphic Novels made from the Classic Moby Dick. Probably quite reader-friendly. The term "show dont tell" reminded me about it. The Vera series is so amazing, the actor playing Vera really is excellent. The book Simone is describing does not sound familiar at all to me so maybe the books can extend the Vera experience for me!!! If you like mysteries the Scottish writer Denise Mina is good but as with many Scottish Crime Writers it is very violently graphic. I just completed Barbara Kingsolver's Demon Copperhead. Completely a page turner!!! Have good holidays, we hope for long lasting Peace in the World.

I always listen to Dave Cooks the Turkey when I’m baking on Christmas Eve. Have you done a Wasgil puzzle? It’s a fun challenge. I’m working on my second one.

My book list is getting longer!! I live near the Canadian border and we get some Canadian broadcasts. I have enjoyed them. If we visit the southern U.S. people often mistakenly think we are Canadian because of our accent 😂.

I usually love books better than tv series, but I had a hard time with the Shetland Books after seeing the series. I think the books are much darker. Ann Cleeves has a new series that is great too!

For quintessential Stuart MacLean, find the CBC Morningside piece where Stuart is talking to Peter Gsowski about his pet cricket. Another excellent Scottish crime writer is Val McDermid.

I "discovered" Stuart Mc clane on a Christmas album" Christmas Songs" he tells the story of Dave & Morley's neighbors annual christmas party and a mix up of the adult eggnog bowl with the kids eggnog bowl. It is for me a classic for every Christmas. It inspired me to find his radio program online

A series that has marked me and that I would love to re read is the Potato Factory trilogy by Bruce Courtenay. Book 2 is Tommo and Hawk and book 3 is Solomon’s Song. Sooooo good. You don’t want it to end. Bryce Courtenay is an amazing author. You will want to read all of his books. ❤

Have any of you ladies read "In the Heart of the Sea?" The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex is a book by American writer Nathaniel Philbrick about the loss of the whaler Essex in the Pacific Ocean in 1820.

Some works are worth reading just for the richness of language and description. Frankenstein’s monster describes the lands he wanders - as does Wilde’s Dorian Gray. For fun - you could look into MC Beaton - her Hamish MacBeth and Agatha Raisin are nothing like how they were portrayed on screen. I’ve only read the first Ann Cleeves - nothing like the tv series and almost a different story. Jimmy Perez is nothing like Dougie Henshall.

I would like to keep watching this podcast, but there are just too many commercials. They cut you off in the middle of sentences, and they occur every few minutes. To interrupt them I have to put down my knitting, pick up the remote and manage to catch the commercial at just the right moment. Just get knitting again and the process repeats. Not worth the aggravation.

Read for the first time to see what happens by the seventh time you know the answers to questions that you didn’t see in the other readings for example why a character was introduced in a chapter near the end each time you read the book you will see the story in a new light. Pick up the nuances that were buried by the excitement of reading the book. I love reading aloud the disc world books by sir Terry Pratchett and his wife. Just love adding my own footnotes. 😮😅😊🍀🌺🍀🖖🖖🖖🌟🌺🌟👍👍👍🍀🌺🍀👋🏻🧝🏼🤚🏻😘💞💕💞🥰🥰🥰
