I agree with many other commenters that the woman should not have touched the pup. Most other professionals have a hands-off approach to filming and do not interfere with wildlife unless they have decided they need to rescue an abandoned or hurt animal and will take it to the appropriate care facilities. I was not impressed with the people involved in filming this video. Even regular people know not to touch wildlife unless it is hurt or they can save them from harm caused by humans: fishing nets, garbage, fishing lines, etc., or if the wildlife is stranded and people can help, but not for the pleasure of solely petting them or other physical affection.

A few observations: 1) First & foremost, I commend you on your choice in music. It is exquisite. I can't think of another piece of music that says, "Harp seal pup desperately searches for milk" any better than this piece of foreign magic you have playing in the background. Trust me...the last thing I want to hear while watching a nature documentary is to hear the sounds of real animals along with sounds of...well...you know...nature. Now, for those who have yet to pick up on my sarcasm, the music is beyond terrible...is distracting...and is another example of a YT poster who is kind of enough to share a visually satisfying video, but somehow is convinced that adding background music is more desirable than just letting the video play with the sounds of nature. Let nature be. The sounds made by the living things in this world are just as beautiful as the visuals we see. 2) A few questions and/or comments: -- At approximately the 4:10 mark, is that the sound of a helicopter in the background? My speakers are on the blink a bit, so I'm not 100% sure. If it is a helicopter that I here, is that what mom seal is screaming about as she's looking skyward a bit and yelling at the top of her lungs? If so, is it the sound/sight of the helicopter that has her screaming (I'm thinking similar to dogs and sirens/alarms that always have them howling to drown out the sound due to the sensitivity of their hearing)? -- A few people mentioned that they believe the pup to be abandoned and that the adult seal we see fairly constantly around the pup is not her mom. I beg to differ. After seeing so many videos on seals, especially with regard to mating, giving birth, and the raising of the pup, I've seen enough to tell me that if that particular seal was not mom, she would not only have absolutely nothing to do with this pup, but she would actually treat it with a great deal of hostility (assuming that if she's not the mom, but did give birth this season to her own pup). Female moms are incredibly territorial, so even the sight of a pup waltzing through their territory will have the female mom in that pup's face instantly,. She will growl/yell at the pup, and do physical harm to the pup as she pushes it out of her territory. Now, if a foreign pup actually managed to get close enough to try and suckle, once that mom sees it, it's game over. I've seen female moms push pups down hills and off of cliffs due to their hostility during this time of year. In the video, you do see where the female attempts to roll on her side (however, she's apparently so fat, so lazy, or a combination of the two, that she can't seem to maintain the position for pup feeding), and the pup does make some short incidental contact with the suckle zone (I'm sorry...I just can't say 'tit', 'teat' or 'nipple.' For whatever reason, each of those words is just too 'clinical' sounding, and just weird in general. I guess you can see I'm not the most mature individual here...lol). -- At the end of the video, when the pup is alone, is he sucking his own thumb/paw in an attempt to suckle? If so, that is just incredibly sad. -- Lastly, I''m still sticking with my theory that the female adult is the pup's mom. Like I said, she would have no interaction at all with a foreign pup. Seals have a very short mom-to-pup feeding period, at least in comparison to most other mammals. It's a matter of, at most, four (4) weeks (which is how long for the weddell seal. Other seal species are much shorter...some as little as 12 to 14 days), and sometimes, due to circumstances, can be as little as two or three weeks. Obviously, when this happens, the pup is undernourished and undersized, as a result. In general, seals are just not the best mothers, as nature goes. They are a bit aloof at times. The female also experiences a great deal of physically demanding and exhausting labors during her life. For example, for most other seal species, the alpha male impregnates the female immediately after she gives birth to her current pup. Immediately as in the day after. So, here is what she is dealing with...impregnated again just having completed the one year gestation period from her current pup...attempting to physically recover from her just finished exhausting and nutrient-depleting labor period from birthing her new pup...having to constantly put off the advances, or give in to, the constant demands for rough and physical sex with the alpha male...working under pressure to constantly produce enough milk for her pup...and...if all that is not enough, she is at the tail-end of a period of days-to-weeks of no nutrition as she ceased to eat once she hit the beachfront to settle in and prepare for the birth of her pup (for some, it could be several days before birth actually occurs). When you take all of these pressures on the seal mom, it's easy to see how she could seem to be a bad mother. For the 50% or so of pups who will not make it one year, most will die from either malnutrition, disease and/or predation. These scenarios happen mostly because the mother is absent at times during the pups early days. Because the mother has not eaten and is now responsible for both herself and her pup, she finds her milk has dried up quickly due to her own lack of nutrients. Because of this, she is forced to abandon her pup on the beachfront as she returns to the waters to feed, often for several days at a time. The pups are forced to wait behind for mom for several reasons...their youth/inexperience...their inability to fish/feed themselves...their lack of knowledge regarding ocean predation...their lack in ability to swim (to swim as a seal can, anyway)...their lack of endurance in the ocean...and their inability to swim in the ocean or dive below the surface due to the fur coat they are initially covered with at birth, etc. It's not that seal moms are bad; it's really just all of the circumstances above that make it difficult to serve the needs of herself, her pup and the fat, disgusting alpha male that is just one bit roll of fat and constantly demands sex from his entire harem.. Note: most of what I shared is not exemplified by the weddell seal. It is mostly the life-cycle of the fur seal.

I mean seriously. These animals find a safe place to give birth and be with their young a short while before separating from them and here you all come in being all invasive and entitled like you are supposed to be there watching this happen. Wake up you are not. Giving birth is stressful enough and now they have to do it in front of you. Shame on you all.
You people in the comment sections screaming about " they shouldn't touch the baby" and "you scared the mother away, so the pup will die" need to remember that YOU ARE NOT EXPERTS. YOU SIMPLY ARE NOT. You need to stfu, and let people who ARE experts in the field do their work and have a little fun. I highly, HIGHLY doubt these people created some disruption that will end the entire population of harp seals' lives. Lighten up, and enjoy the video. Climb down off your soapbox, and stop holding yourselves out to be something you aren't.

First, I was going to post to say how awful and distracting the background music is for the viewer. Why anyone ever thinks that some awful, synthesized music is somehow better than just listening to nature while in its element is beyond me. The music comment was all I was going to mention, that is until I viewed other parts of the video. Why are the individuals on this voyage touching the wild animals? There is a video segment with an individual lying down next to the seal pup, stroking its backside. To me, this is a violation of basic human/nature observing and viewing. Now, if these are scientists who are doing actual work to advance our knowledge, then touching the animal while interacting is understandable. However, this was a person who didn't appear to have anything of science merit. This appeared to be somebody who wanted to 'pet the cute animal.' The credible touring companies of the poles insist on not only NEVER touching an animal (if possible), but they keep a 5' distance from all wildlife. Touching most wildlife is not only disruptive, but could have fatal consequences. Lastly, and while still on this topic, I could not believe how upset, confused and angry mom seal was while the helicopter took off from a seemingly close distance to her pup. This type of noise pollution has been shown to have fatal consequences in some areas, with certain species. Parents of young offspring have been frightened away permanently from nests, burrows, under the sea, from ice, etc. To me, this whole trip displayed in this video is almost shameful.
