Lovely piece. The calligraphy is beautiful, the energy is what I love about the Baroque, and this unknown composer piqued my curiosity to do a little research. I love serendipitous learning. I uncovered (thank you wikipedia) the fact that Graun was a towering opera composer in his day, who I like to imagine, is happily waking up in his grave to find himself with a new audience. I also learned he is an exemplar of the Berlin school of composition along with CPE Bach. Finally, his great great great great grandson was none other than the great novelist Vladimir Nabakov. Graun, with this new attention, reminds me of the composer Antonio Bazzini, beloved to all violinists. Bazzini wrote 35 operas, none of which we have ever heard of. On the other hand, his 3 minute encore, the Dance of the Goblins continues to delight and amaze audiences worldwide, because it is chock full of every virtuosic technique imaginable. So, I hope Graun does not think we are ignoring his once-famous operas. I am unused to seeing the key signature written that way, but I guess he had a good reason. As others have mentioned, Graun, CPE Bach, Muthel, Benda, Quantz and Abel were the major practitioners. CPE Bach was probably the greatest, but do not rule out the others.

Este concierto por su estilo parece hecho para Federico el Grande, quien amaba lo nuevo y simple. Si lo compuso cuando Graun estaba en la corte, posiblemente lo tocó CPE Bach, principal al teclado alli. Ah , quien pudiera haber presenciado la visita de JSB cuando CPE logro que el rey lo invitara. Y oir el aplauso a JSB de estos musicos / compositores, lo mejor de su epoca, luego que el rey le pidiera improvisar una fuga a 3... ( y luego a 6 !! ). Cuando el rey tuvo suficiente del "raro y pasado de moda JSB ", y se retiró, los musicos de la orquesta lo ovacionaron. Ellos sí supieron entender la calidad de lo hecho. Talvez Graun estuvo allí.
