With all the torture and murder and dismemberment and disembowelment and castration and whatnot going on in this show it is this scene right here that sticks with me.. just a bunch of innocent villagers rounded up and slaughtered by stretching them out, one by one by one.. it's almost holocaust like in how sad it is.. that boy with the beautiful blue eyes getting chosen to have a rat eat into his heart.. just because he looked up.. all the Harrenhal stuff was all very unsettling for me in just how unfair it is

The Starks had outlawed flaying in the North, at the time Boltons may have only done so secretly, and only openly began doing it after the took over the North. Even show Stannis was burning enemies he intended to kill, as he had the rightful claim to the throne, not as a means of torture like the Lannisters, who did for the wrong reasons. The Lannisters were just evil, aside from Tyrion.

Well, wouldn't make much sense from an economic perspective. Harrenhal was extremely large and expensive, rebuilding it would have been financially ruinous. The upkeep wouldn't even be affordable to lords besides the top ruling elite of the country or the king himself. And then, what do you do with such a huge castle? Harrenhal was built as the ultimate garrison for ironborn rule in the riverlands, a tool of suppression and military occupation. It was no beautiful castle to live in or economically viable. It had no harbor, no trade routes, no real strategic value and no other advantages like Winterfells hot springs.

It's a perfect example of the show utilizing the fact that not showing something gruesome can be more effective than showing it outright. Our imaginations tend to fill in the gaps with the worst possible scenarios. The fact that we can't even confirm exactly WHAT it is that they're doing to that poor bastard (though it sounds like they're using the rack) to make him scream in agony like that makes it even worse.

Even in House of the dragon it is a ruin. I’d love to see how impressive it is before it’s destruction. Jamie said no other castle in the realm could compare to the size of even the ruins. Here to praying we get an Aegon 1 conquest flashback and see it.

You underestimate the nonsensical murder of innocents in war. For example, a US Apache pilot and gunner went on a 3 hour killing spree shooting at bystanders, apartment residents and people in cars using their 3cm cannon and Hellfire missiles in Iraq. Another example, recently a Russian mechanized brigade entered the Ukrainian city of Hostomel, set up a position on the bank of a road and started opening fire with machineguns and an APC on random police cars, civillians, and even killed several people with a Russian citizenship and another with a German citizenship. War is hell, and sometimes the soldiers are nothing but a bunch of bloodthirsty killers with no mind at all
