The power of Harry is also in his accent (from the Hague) the creative Hague language, the story about his family and especially his songs. He used to be the singer of a band in the 80s: klein orkest (small orchestra) and they had some very strong lyrics. The song 'over the muur' (Over the wall) about the berlin wall is highly recommendable. (Don't know if you have reacted to it allready) He isn't that known amongst the bigger audience, but theatre audiences love him. He used to be an English teacher in high school and has some great stories about that time. He was also great friends with cabaretier Jeroen van Merwijk who sadly passed a few years ago. They did a show together and they are both very great/sharp with their words and thoughts. They had known each other since they both were unknown students. Jeroen was even less known with the bigger (tv) audience, but very popular with theater audiences. Clips and songs by Jeroen are also highly recommendable if someone wants to translate them.

I think Harrie Jekkers is also known by the big audience because of the song 'Oh oh Den Haag' (this was a solo performance by Harrie Jekkers) and, as you mentioned, 'Over de muur', which was his greatest hit. Both songs were in the top of the hit lists in that era. Fun fact: The song 'Oh oh Den Haag' was sung by 'Harrie Klorkestein', of which 'Klorkestein' is an anagram of Klein Orkest. 't Klein Orkest was found after Groot Orkest (Big Orchestra) fell apart, in 1978 by Harrie Jekkers and Koos Meinderts together. Harrie Jekkers also wrote a lot of songs for 'Kinderen voor kinderen 11' (Children for children part 11), also together with Koos Meinderts. I'm afraid you've mistaken Jeroen van Merwijk for Koos Meinderts, as far as I know Harrie Jekkers never worked close together with Jeroen van Merwijk. Jeroen van Merwijk was born close to Utrecht (in Bilthoven, he moved to Utrecht at the age of 6) and Harrie Jekkers studied English in the city of Groningen and was an English teacher in the city of Utrecht. I love his shows 'Met een goudvis aan zee', 'Het gelijk van de koffietent' and 'De lachende piccolo'. My favourite songs of him are 'Ellie', 'Soldaat op de foto' and 't Lijk'. 'Over 100 jaar...' was played on my mom's funeral, that was kinda funny, she always was a rebel in her way.

That part about smoking is also hilarious and true. When I was drafted in 1989 in the Dutch Army (42e Bataljon Limburgse Jagers, armored infantry), we also had those smoke breaks during training, the sergeant would say "smoke break, everyone smokes, if you don't smoke then just put a pencil in your mouth".

Don't forget jeroen van merwijk. He was a great word artist, just like harry. Harry and Jeroen did a very entertaining show together as wel, since they were great friends since they were unknown students. (You can find it on youtube)
