Cynthia Erivo’s performance was so powerful and emotional in this movie. Harriet’s unwavering determination to be free is so inspiring, intense, and triumphing. She didn’t let anything stand in her way. The fact that she risked her life for other people, and made so many sacrifices, speaks volumes of the compassionate woman she was. She was indeed a hero and an angel. I really wish Cynthia had won the Best Actress award at the Oscars. But I’m glad she was at least nominated and recognized for it. The movie’s theme song “Stand Up” is absolutely beautiful, too! ♥️

Its shocking how He’ll bring up suicide as a sin against god, because they actually tried to excuse their actions as wills of God, how they were keeping the slaves with work, housing and food while those free slaves in the north were ‘Starving, poor and homeless’ Im sure they’d rather be that then a slave.

There was always a difference between ancient forms of slavery and the Southern US kind (called "chattel slavery"). In ancient times, the master owned your LABOR and OUTPUT -- typically for a certain number of years -- but not your BODY. There was a contract, real or customary, involved. By contrast, chattels are mere possessions like a plow, furniture, or farm animals, and that's the legal status a slave had in Dixie. It's the most reprehensible and immoral variety of a reprehensible and immoral practice -- slavery.

Runaways were at least whipped severely and confined. If a repeat offender (habitual runaway) they might be hot-branded or otherwise visibly disfigured in some way that didn't significantly diminish their sale value or ability to work -- say, by removing an earlobe, or one or two fingers from a field worker. This was done as an object lesson to others. The punishment tended to be more severe the more "proud" (influential, well-respected) the slave/more likely to inspire more runaways.

I would love to have movies like this one complement history classes. I remember learning about Harriet, but not in this way. It's different when you read it on a book with lots of vague details, when it should emphasize about the people's suffering and see the physical scars they carried, they had a big will to survive. It's truly inspiring to a younger America.

He was of course, a narcissist sociopath-- This is exactly what they do to their "food" , as my shrink explains it. . Harriet was his "food" . But now that she's rejected him, he would have killed her .thank the Lord she jumped ..this part of the film terrified me . and yes, there is still slavery --it's just kept quiet

oh my God Harriet Tubman has been through so much pain and suffering in silence ever since slavery from a long time ago has happened I can't believe people who treat African Americans like this it's like trying a human like an animal

The tools of discrimination, prejudice, ethnocentrism, and hate are used by a person to ensure his or her existence-to continue to climb up the economic ladder of life. In today’s society, like anytime in history, it’s boils down to what one needs to do to ensure one’s survival. As a PEOPLE , I sincerely believe that with self love, self preservation, most especially maintaining safe communities and UNITY, our survival will continue to be ENSURED, despite the facts that forms of inequalities that will continue to exist, almost every where , centuries and decades later! The most important thing is not to be anyone equal , but to continue to have a clear understanding that our survival depends on each other, as a group of people at home and abroad!

Unpopular Opinion: I feel like the long hair dude on some level really did care fur Harriet, but had always been taught that black people were not human. We like to point fingers and say “Yeah I would never do that” but the truth is that people really did think that that was the way things should be, because that’s what they were brought up to think. We as humans are built around a certain social norm and when people don’t fit it, we treat them as lesser beings. Anyway, I’m not saying it was right I’m just saying to cut him some slack.

If your parents murdered children for fun...like litteraly went to elementary schools, and playgrounds and murdered children, regardless of how you were raised, and what your parents peers might think, wouldn't you know it was wrong? "Cut him some slack"...my God.

I got that feeling too from time to time He brings up the past, like when they were children, a lot and it’s clear that him and Harriet having grown up as kids established a “relationship” of sorts where he essentially feels like he knows her better than anyone else But at the end of the day, he’s still a slave master and he was no better than anyone else who had wronged her

J Rob I get where ur coming from, but he’s human. He’s not perfect far from it in fact. I don’t think this dude in particular is a good guy, but many slave owners did amazing things for this country, and I don’t think they would try to own slaves if they were alive now. I’m just saying it was a different time back then, and we’ve changed for the better.

It's people like her who embodied the legitimate struggles and freedoms that america is based on, incidentally, the first american to die in the revolution was also an african american, Crispus Attucks Let black history not be distorted as some majorly different struggle, wholly seperate from american issues, as Black history is an integral part of AMERICAN history.
