Bypassing the Great Alpine Rd and taking the West Ovens Track and then Gunns Track over Mt Sugarloaf this is a scenic alternate route to get to the start of the Dargo High Plains Rd.
West Ovens Track is generally an easy drive as classified on the Hema maps and the first half of Gunns Track would fit that description as well. The last 8km or so is very different with some steep hills, loose rocks coupled with huge drop off's either side of the track as well.

Always fun finding new tracks this one was a bit of a gem, nice valley driving with some ridgeline track then this crazy rocky section with massive drop offs

Guys try was realignment back 40 years ago, we dozed a better access trk for trucks to gain access to the Cresent mine site on the Gunns Creek , the track was then dozed down to the site so mining equipment could be removed and repurposed Tough going then as winching trucks from Gunns Creek proved difficult , the track was revegitated to the creek afterwards. I have since walked twice into the historic mining sites down there and documented much more history lost in time. There once was a small settlement located below the Cresent Site of about 8 huts , all now lost by bushfire and regrowth. Very tough unforgiving country to walk in.

Thanks for sharing Dave, great insight into the history of the area, stories like that are what make the high country IMHO. Would have been amazingly challenging doing that work back then. You're definitely fitter than me hiking it.

Yep, track realignment. It happens often. Nice little video, beautiful Ridge line track, I don’t remember ever doing it. Great work thank you Jason. Nice to see the paj holding up 👍.

That's an awesome track. Even the section that isn't seasonally closed is a nice drive. Just added this one to my to-do list.

Thanks for sharing. That season gate at the top has been moved back closer to the road. I went through there from the top 4 or so years ago, and the gate was over the top of the first or 2nd hill on a steep downhill section. If you found it closed it would have been impossible to turn around. It's a totally underrated track, cause the views are amazing, and much more interesting than the bitumen 👍

Sounds helpful, I didn't see the second gate. Couldn't agree more, will be my goto route for travel from Harrietville to DHP Road from now on. Less traffic, less stress and a more fun drive. Most of it is pretty easy.

Great track Jase, fantastic views. Certainly wouldn't be going anywhere near the right hand edge just before Sugarloaf that's for sure😰. Glad to see your new case went well. Thanks again for your efforts. Cheers, BobbyB.

Wow, that seasonal section of track is like a highway now - I drove it about 8 years ago and it was a double black for sure. I was very glad to have the front locker in my GU even though it was dry on the day. The first gate was (is? ) just after the steep descent started, just to make it bloody hard to stop and back out......like so many of the track closure gates.

Good to know. Did look like it'd had some work done on it, maybe why it was graded easy. I could well imagine over time it'd get hectic!!

You'll be glad you did. We just drove this the other way last week. A mate of mine (who'd seen this video) was blown away. Reckons I need to sell the track harder so will probalby do another vid, since we came back the other way. It's as good as blue rag in my opinion

@@OffTheBeatenPathAus amazing!!! can't wait. Have you done pheasant creek track from Buckland Valley? I'm assuming there's nothing too sketchy about it? I'll have my old man with me so i don't want anything too gnarly. Thanks again for the advice and the relaxing, entertaining videos mate - its very appreciated.

@@brian_brockleigh Drove Pheasant creek a few years back, yeah I don't think you'll have any issues. Paddy's Hill nearby can be slippery when wet but that's the only one in that area I recall to worry about. Enjoy the trip.

Interestingly the Gaia maps shows (correctly) the West Rd / Gunns Rd intersection another 250 m or so up the road with a hard left turn onto Gunns.

Hema maps are dreadful in the vhc , there are many missing/poorly rated tracks on that platform.

That's true, especially with the ratings but they're easy to read, I prefer the format to other digital maps.
