Though it had been six years since the Wright Brothers from Ohio in the United States had made the first ever powered flight, the first British attempt had only been made in the previous year and Harry was determined to be the first in Ireland. He was just one of many young men to become fascinated by aviation, although his main competitor for the honour of making Ireland's first flight was, in fact, a local woman, Lilian Bland.
