His best ability....Availability. But on a serious note Ste, despite the abuse (not the tactical criticism but the abuse) he has still got onto a pitch in front of thousands and performed his best. @@wiretom who’s good in a high line in your opinion. If you say Martinez let me tell you that our defence is statistically deeper when he plays than when he doesn’t and that our defence is statistically highest when Maguire plays. As Maguire is the more aggressive centerback, he’s going to get burned. It’s much more important for the less aggressive defender - the one who is going to stay back and clean up - to have that recovery pace. What exposes Maguire in both situations high up the pitch and deeper isn’t his position on the pitch, it’s the fact that so often our midfielders are easily beaten giving the attackers a chance to run straight at Maguire. It’s not about positioning, it’s about compactness.

United season ticket holder for many years.100% agree with this. Maguire is brilliant in the air and good at defending his box. His pass selection is poor. He plays the wrong pass to players that are marked and often plays the ball behind people. When teams break on United he really struggles with his positioning and reading of the game. I believe he always does his best and I respect that, but ultimately he isn't good enough to get United to where they want go.

Maguire’s biggest problem for me is he ponderous on the ball. Having him at the back sets the tone for slow, jittery build up. He is brilliant In a low block, as long as there is no space in behind him, which is why Onana is great for him. DE GEA was stuck on his line and left space. He is a monster in both boxes in dead ball situations, and he has now added driving with the ball out of defence and no one can take the ball off him. Never forget that Harland said he was the hardest defender he had ever played against. His long passes are good, his short passing or passing under pressure is dog poo poo, and he takes on average 6 seconds from when he receives it to when he releases it. No one, and I mean no one can have a go at him for his mental strength and ability to work hard and resilience . He is also a good bloke, which is why Southgate likes him.

The eye test is irrelevant because of his stats ,,,???? Our scouts had , Maguires stats and Bruno's stats . These scouts still know more about football than anyone on this page .... They recommended Maguire , they didn't recommend Bruno ...... That's because of the. Eye test , watching him . His style causes issues & the stats don't make up for it . It's the hypocrisy of how favouritism impacts what ppl see that gets me ..... 1 player , great stats = great player , no eye test required . ... 2nd player ... Ignore the stas & focus on the eye test . Sporting Lisbon won the league for the first time in 20 years immediately after selling Bruno . The scouts were right . He's a good player , but he was never the answer to the question .

@@mundolioknows6447 I don't know if it was on this channel, but I know Varane as a signing has been criticized for his injuries and wages quite a bit. Lindelof extending his contract is only by a year, which isn't the worst. If we sell him this summer it means we get a transfer instead of him leaving transfer free. @@mundolioknows6447 Seems you misunderstood me. Lindelof would be 4th choice CB if he stays. Maguire would be 3rd choice CB if he stays. But if Maguire gets sold we'd probably get a second CB signing this summer who would become our new 2nd and 3rd choice CB. I think it's more likely Lindelof will sit out his contract because, as you said, we probably won't get three CBs in one transfer window. But if I'm wrong and he does leave we could fetch 5 million for Lindelof, it's not a lot in the grand scheme of things, but it's 5 million we would otherwise miss out on. Giving big wages to players who later become obsolete is one of the big issues plaguing United. Usually those players run out their contract, so we're not recuperating any money, no matter how little, through a transfer fee. It's money the club is missing out on for no reason.

Good summary Ste. We all know Harry Maguire's limitations, slow to move and react, not always fully aware of what's going on around him and relatively poor or at best unimaginative decision making. He does however seem to be more robust than most of the rest of our defensive cohort this season, which is a bonus, especially this season. He does always give 100% in his performances and seems to care deeply about doing his best for the team and he is a bit of a beast in the air both in defence and attack. I actually think he is owrth keeping as a squad player, but wouldn't be anyone's first choice.

The absolute worst thing Harry does for me is CONSTANTLY telling people to slow down, he's scared of a fast game because he's not got the pace to recover and he's not got the ball playing ability to play in a fast moving game tempo... He KILLS so many of our counter attacks now by screaming at Onana to slow down... realistically we've got Rashford and Garnacho who love a ball in behind and we've got Onana who loves nothing more than to catch a ball from a corner and give them a kick and chase over their fullbacks. But they never get a chance to do it! Onana sprints to the edge of the box, the wingers start yo sprint and Harry gets in his face and waves for everyone to slow down The thing in possession is also frustrating, he stands on the ball thinking he’s drawing a pressing defender… in reality they don’t mind him being on the ball, they don’t even want to press him because they don’t need to. They let him have it whilst they organise players to press the player he’s targeting (knowing the pass will probably not be great) then THEY DECIDE when they want him to pass by having someone jog towards him. They quite literally play him into a trap every single fucking time!

Probably not as a starter. Is he a good center back though? Yes. And if utilized correctly I think he can even be a very good center back. Look at Dier under Tuchel for instance. A lot of people scratched their head at this move, but since moving to Bayern he has been their best defender. If a Tuchel were to come in, I think Maguire would be utilized in a similar manner and I could even see a back three of Martinez, Maguire, and a Todibo, for example, being extremely effective.

He gets the ball and takes two touches to control it, then takes two touches to get it out of his feet to prepare to pass, then takes two touches to look up and pick his target, then takes two touches to change his mind and then takes two more touches to set himself to pass to someone else...and so on. Everything is just so slow and ponderous with him. People talk about him being a ball playing defender and he is capable of making line breaking passes. The problem is, he takes so long that by the time he's actually ready to make the pass, the open space has been closed off. I think this, more than anything else, more than his lack of pace, is why ten Hag doesn't fancy him. ten Hag wants to move the ball quickly through the lines and far too often, Maguire kills any momentum and slows the pace of the game to a crawl, giving the opposition time to close potential gaps and set themselves, which in turn forces Maguire to go for the simple pass to his left back, which, as Ste has pointed out numerous times, often goes behind the player, slowing the game down even further.

I think he's had a good season. He's not a good player on the ball but I think he comes out of this season with an enhanced reputation compared to the way he left last season. I commend him for that at least.

The issues with Maguire come from watching him both at Utd & England. His stats are his stats, and too much weight is put on those by the younger generation of Football Manager/FIFA players. But irrespective of whether he's playing for Utd or England, he takes an age to select a pass. His go to if one isn't glaringly obvious is to move forwards with it and then get 15 yards forwards and play the 1st easy ball (normally to the full back). Doesn't matter if he's pressed or has an age on the ball, his pass looks sloppy and is inaccurate in terms of precision & pace. He's not a bad defender if he has to head stuff (Varane is his equal at least), but he isn't what Utd have needed and in hindsight probably wasn't the right choice to buy at the time, certainly not for the fee. His time has come and if he has pride and ambition, surely he'll want to be 1st choice in a team that plays to his strengths more, rather than being in limbo (slow and little agility to turn quick) knowing he needs to step up but doesn't because he's safe further back where he won't have as much ground to cover behind him and the keeper.

He should never have been captain. Having that responsibility hampered him and he struggled to get out of that rut. He's a very good defender and has played very well for us this year within his limitations. He might not be an "astute ball player" but he has his strengths and has been playing to them lately. He's still not one I'd keep around because he simply doesn't fit the kind of way I'd like to see United play, but I'll give him major props for stepping up and doing what he could do when we needed to and I hope he finds a good home when he inevitably leaves. I've developed great respect for him, despite his obvious flaws.

I'm not a Maguire "superfan" but I'll tell y'all something for sure, there are not many center backs out there as good as Maguire when his head is in the game. Since when I have been watching football Harry is the only center back that has been criticized for for being slow which is very common for center backs, the best of the best cbs were slow. What he needs is a partner a little bit pacier than him who can cover up and we're good. Talking about standards pftt!

Everything about the team changes when he’s on the pitch though. We sit deeper, we play out slower and the gaping hole between the midfield and the defence becomes more of a problem. His reading of the game is shocking and his decision making is almost not existent. He’s filled a hole this season due to injuries but can anyone honestly say that if he’d left for West Ham and we used the cash to replace him it wouldn’t have been an upgrade?

Exactly! His personal stock has benefited from the injury crisis at the club. When everyone's fit he wouldn't get anywhere near the starting XI. Case and point being the amount of times Shaw has started there ahead of him. With so many players's perceived values dropping this season I'd say the likes of Maguire's and McTominay's value has risen, which will help when it comes to selling them in the summer.

I think the best complement you could give Maguire now is that if you sold him this summer you'd be right to ask for £30+ million, where previously, you'd be lucky to get £10m. He's always been a decent box defender but he's not a stopper, charging into tackles all the time. When he's been asked to step off his line for England and Utd, he's poor. He's more the sweeper, doing what Van Dijk does for Liverpool, the last line of defence. I think with a partner who can step out, he'd do okay. Something I see him doing a lot this season he never did before is those 20 yard, on the ground, line breaking passes. And not just big switches but those deep curling crosses from his centre back position that go into the back stick. That's him bridging the gap between him and Lindelof, and making a case that he should stay instead of Lindelof. We're definitely signing 1, if not 2 centre backs this summer, if INEOS have anything about them. Martinez will stay, but you're only keeping one of Maguire, Evans and Lindelof. I think Evans goes, maybe into a coaching role, and you're selling the other 2, one this summer and the other next summer.

As a team, we aren't good at playing out from the back, it's been proven since ETH came in as manager. And guess what.... the manager is still trying to play out from the back. He has made the same mistake for 21 months as manager. The fact he hasn't learnt from his mistakes is the biggest concern here. Everyone knows Maguire is an old fashioned CB who defends the box, and is an aerial beast. Those qualities are the reason we bought him. If the manager plays to his strengths, you see the best of him. Man City didn't buy Haaland and play him out wide. They played him in his best position, in his best role, and unsurprisingly, they get the best out of him. The same argument can be made for AWB. We all know he is a beast 1 on 1, and is much better at defending than attacking..... guess what ETH tries to do with him? He pushes him forward, he wants him to overlap, he gets him on the ball in the final 3rd. Square pegs, round holes comes to mind. We have a manager who can't adapt, is unwilling to learn, too stubborn to change and isn't getting the best out of anyone.
