Frodo is fighting an internal battle 24/7 against the power of the Ring. He has no rest. AND the closer he gets to Morder, the worse it gets. The Ring is gaining strength...and a Hobbit (Frodo) is fighting it every step of the way. He's being torn apart. He making the ultimate sacrifice of his very soul to try to save Middle Earth. BTW, no blame to you. Most people do not really understand that Frodo's battle is entirely internal. It is not flashy like everyone else (even Sam's). It's going to get much worse for Frodo...and again, it is all internal.

@@DaKidsReact You have to think of Sauron as the embodiment of evil here. He's the Middle Earth Satan (Sauron the Deceiver), so Frodo is basically fighting the will of the devil himself for all intents and purposes and that ring wants to do anything to get back to its master. It's manipulating him. Frodo hears Gollum say someone, even Sam, will try to take the ring, then the ring is amplifying that to make Frodo believe it. And the reason Frodo keeps hope for Gollum is he's got to believe there's hope Gollum can be saved because he's afraid of what it means for himself. If Gollum can't be saved, then Frodo fears neither can he be after carrying the Ring this long. He sees Gollum as what is happening to himself.

My favorite bit of trivia is at the start when Saruman is stabbed, Jackson wanted Christopher Lee to let out a yell. Lee's response was, "That's not the sound a man makes when he is stabbed in the back. There's only a gasp, a release of air in the lungs." Lee knew from experience as he was practically a secret agent during his time as a Nazi hunter during and right after WW II. One thing the movies left out is that Faramir's father Denethor has one of the seeing stones and has been using it. Sauron has been poisoning his mind slowly for years. He's not evil himself, but he is compromised and corrupted.

Fun fact about Pippin, dispite him being a total fool who always gets the fellowship into trouble, he is actually the heir to the thane of the Shire. While the Hobbits have no official king (technically loyal to the fallen kingdom of Arnor) they do have a hobbit family with the noble title of Thane. Pippin's Father is the lord of the Shire, and he is set to inherit the position when his father steps down or passes.

And he's not really a fool, he's the hobbit equivalent of having a 17 year old fighting in the trenches in a war he doesn't fully understand. He grows up a lot during the journey, but he's still just a kid, in the story (despite Billy Boyd technically being oldest of the hobbit actors 😂)

Pippin and Gimli both got "dumbed down" for the movies. As an example, in the books Pippin was actually the one to provide the clue that allowed Gandalf to open the Dwarven door at Moria, and Dwarves were noted for their manners and pride in appearance, whereas in the movie Gimli was frequently shown as a bit of a slob when eating.
@cadendance976

@@taun856 yeah, it's more obvious with Gimli, where he's written to be a comic relief. While Pippin was able to show intelligence and capability, it was his cluelessness which caused many an issue. Such as throwing a rock down a well in an abandoned dwarf city, full of orcs and monster.

Don’t be so harsh on Frodo. If the places were exchanged and Sam was the one carrying the ring, he would be acting just like Frodo is. I get that Frodo's actions at times are frustrating but ask that you try and remember in those moments that the ring is powerful and wants to be found. So when there is an opportunity, it screams into Frodo's mind and tries to take over. Frodo has been wearing the ring at this point for months, and it has been eating away at him that whole time. Look at what it did to Smegal in only a few minutes, Frodo has a very strong character, but he is tired and worn down, when he says the ring is getting heavier, that was not just metaphorical, it literally gets heavier. To the point where it is gouging bruises into his neck. Frustration is fair when he falters and the ring takes control, but it is the ring doing the frustrating action. Frodo is to be pitied; he is sacrificing himself little by little every moment he continues to carry that ring. Respectfully.

37:01 Movie-Denethor is portrayed more over-the-top than book-Denethor. He'd been holding Mordor at bay for _years_ and in a desperate attempt to find anything he could to gain an advantage, used the Palantír that was in Minas Tirith. Sauron gained the upper hand in this way and wore down Denethor's resolve and hope. He's a shadow of his former self at this point, and shown further gone and more cruel to his son, for cinematic purposes, of course. He most certainly favored Boromir, but didn't hate Faramir as intensely as the movie shows.

At 18:00, you ask, "They twins?" No, they are cousins; Merry is eight years older than Pippin. What Merry said was "since before we were Tweens." Tolkien writes in FOTR about the young Frodo, "At that time Frodo was still in his "tweens," as the hobbits called the irresponsible twenties between childhood and coming of age at thirty-three." Since Tolkien's time the word has acquired a different meaning, referring now to pre-teen children.

@DaKidsReact Sauron poured most of his power into the ring. It's Frodo's ability to block Sauron out of his mind that is allowing them to keep going. This is why Gandolf did not accept the ring from Frodo in the first film because both Sauron and Gandolf's powers combined would be the end of Middle-earth. Smeagel only saw the ring and it took hold of him which is what makes Frodo so special.

For the record, Merry and Pippin are not twins, though of course they are related as just about everyone in the Shire is- Hobbits love tracking their relations and cousins. Merry and Pippin have been together since before their *Tweens*, which is the hobbit term for being a 20-something and foolish. Hobbits, living longer than humans, come of age on their 33rd birthday. (Which is what Frodo was turning on the same night of Bilbo's 111th, the big party was for both these momentous events!) Tweens are when a hobbit is full grown, but not at all settled, and prone to running all over, stealing from Farmer Maggot, potentially going on silly little adventures... So about the 18-21 range for humans, when yeah, okay, they're adults *kind of*, but not really yet.

At 10:10, Eowyn isn't speaking Elvish. In Tolkien's book, the Rohirrim speak their own tongue, which Tolkien translates as Old English or Anglo-Saxon. Peter Jackson & Co. wisely decided not to complicate things by including this in the movies, except in a few places, such as here. Note that most of the other Men of the West speak the Common Tongue, which is translated as Modern English; the leaders of the Rohirrim, such as Theoden and Eowyn, also know the Common Tongue. Tolkien was probably the world's leading expert on Anglo-Saxon in his day.

About Frodo... your reaction is understandable because it's really hard to portray someone's internal struggle without the narration and descriptions we got in the books. It's easier to get excited about battles and action scenes because the motives and objectives are clearer. The movie tried to make us understand Frodo's torment through Elijah Wood's acting without overloading us with descriptions and infodumping. Frodo was just a hobbit, an introverted little book nerd who wanted a peaceful life. He was thrust into an overwhelming surreal situation where everybody expected him to save the world while he was being torn up inside. He gave it his best, his all.

Remember how wearing the necklace just turned Ron into an ass cause it was constantly flooding him with bad thoughts? The Ring is like that cranked up to 11, going after Frodo 24/7. Not only that but it’s physically taxing too. By the end of the movie Frodo’s neck is bloody and bruised from how heavy the chain is on him. Smeagol's first act upon seeing the Ring was to commit murder. He hadn't even touched it yet, before he strangled his best friend Deagol, to death. Smeagol began the transition to Gollum with terrible speed. The dream Eowyn was having of a "of a giant wave" which she couldn't escape, was a vision of Numenor, the island where Aragorn's ancestors were kings and queens. Numenor suffered the same fate as Atlantis - total destruction for breaking faith with the gods. Aragorn and Boromir's ancestors escaped because they remained faithful to the Valar (gods).

the reason Gandalf covers the Palantir and tries to keep it hidden is because its basically a 2 way camera. Part of the reason that Denethor acts the way he does is because he is also in possession of a Palantir, and used it to essentially stare down sauron, which broke his spirit and mind a little bit. Denethor and Pippin have directly seen into the mind of the most evil thing in existence, which as you can imagine, fucks ya up a bit!!!

As far as each movie is concerned, I really can't think of a better trilogy. Sure there are classics where maybe 1 or 2 are peak (Godfather, B2TF etc), but this here..all 3 straight bangers. My boy Sam still the MVP. Andy Serkis deserves sooooo much more praise for his role as Golum.

About Longbottom Leaf, alot of people say its Weed. Alot of people say its tobacco. Either way Tolkien lived in an era where pipes, tobacco and weed were quite often distributed and enjoyed casually. The movies hint to it as Weed (DAT GREEN SHIE) while also is mentioned as Tobaccon twice in the Two Towers. The one thing we know for sure is that is a strain of Nicotiana and it does get "a high" effect on Hobbitses. Its also really well for its dense smoke and thus used to make elaborate smoke rings. Also in a BBC interview with tolkiens son, he confirmed that it has Hallucinogenic effects in the Hobbits, so take it as you want and enjoy more :D its a really not that big deal in the grand scheme of things, but as a stoner myself i do like to think that Merry and Pippin was tribbing hobbitballs while ruining Isengard :D

46:02 What you're describing is called "posting." It's done in English style riding. If you look closely, you'll see everyone doing it, except Aragorn. Viggo as Aragorn is riding Western style. He was raised in Argentina for a time, and learned his riding skills there. This Western style of riding works well for the character, I think. It's a more practical style, leaving a hand free for roping cattle, or in this case, wielding a sword. It works well for Strider, but I imagine that King Aragorn (aka Elessar) would ride English.

Frodo is the protagonist, but not the hero. He's a sacrifice for the life of Middle-earth, like Jesus in ours (Tolkien was a devout Catholic). Tolkien knew he couldn't get away with a quest-novel that has a non-heroic protagonist alone; hence, Aragorn, who fulfills the "heroic" function. Of course, others have opportunities to be heroic too, including Sam. In any case, it's hard to be heroic when you literally have a DARK LORD around your neck, effing you up, and the Ring IS Sauron, more or less.

King Theoden will forever be written in song and tale. He is the best king in the LoTR. He rode with his men into battle and death. He fulfilled his oath to the kingdom of Gondor. RIP to the actual actor who played him.

Tolkien said about the pipe weed that it was “probably a type of nicotiana” aka tobacco, but that “probably” he threw in there definitely left some room for interpretation lol. In Unfinished Tales, a collection of stories and notes published by Tolkien's son, Christopher, Gandalf's description of pipe-weed suggests the herb produces mind-altering effects and euphoria. Following criticism from Saruman, Gandalf replies, "If you used this herb yourself. You might find that smoke blown out cleared your mind of shadows within. Anyway, it gives patience, to listen to error without anger. But it is not one of my toys. It is an art of the Little People away in the West." I like to think it’s somewhere in the middle between tobacco and weed 😂

Put it this way The ring is such a corrupting force that even sauron wouldn't be able to resist it. Like let's say for some reason he had a chance to become good. The ring would keep him from doing that. That's how powerful the ring is. So the fact that frodo resists it so well for most of the journey is just insane

When the director, Peter Jackson, was explaining to Christopher Lee what he wanted from the scene where Wormtongue stabs Saruman in the back, Lee said, "Have you any idea what kind of noise happens when somebody’s stabbed in the back? Because I do.” Lee was a veteran of World War II, so Jackson let Lee decide what to do in that scene.

That ring is so powerful that Gandalf was terrified to touch it. This ring is basically pure evil. That corrupts a lot “stronger” folk than a Hobbit. The fact he is not completely insane or drawn toward Sauron is the greatest physical feat ever in the history of this world.

Well frodo being a hobbit was really what allowed him to last as long as he did. Hobbits aren't greedy and are some of the most carefree folk. And because of this frodo being a very pure person, wa able tos rave off the effects of the ring far longer than most.

The first scene with Smeagol and Deagol: Tolkien was very much a devout Catholic. It's meant to mirror the first murder, Cain and Abel, but instead of a murder out of envy and jealousy, it's for the RIng, which is the physical form of temptation itself.
