In the movies they changed the eagle to a raven to avoid confusion. By that logic, griffindor should have gotten a griffin...or you know.... A door

For the Comments- Raven- means the color black Claw- the claw of an animal Eagles have black claws, so they have *raven* claws.

I thought so too. It just basically means Raven(black) claw. Apart from the fact that it's also the founder's surname. Or maybe she chose eagles because Ravenclaws think outside the box.

The eagle is the whole of Ravenclaw´s name: Raven is an old english word for black, and the eagle has black claws, so the eagle is the animal with raven-claws.

Rowling wouldn't do that XD Literally everything in her books have some sort of historical/scientific reference or meaning etc. I mean even Sirius has heaps of meaning to his name. Sirius Black. Cassidy March - That's actually not true. That came from a Harry Potter Fake Facts blog on Tumblr. Jack Russells are too small to chase European otters, which are very large. Otterhounds are the dogs used to chase otters, not Jack Russells. Jack Russells were bred to chase foxes - but I don't see anyone saying "Ron's Patronus is a Jack Russell because he's secretly in love with Seamus Finnigan, who has a fox Patronus."

Scotland is a Celtic country and there is a direct connection between Raven and Eagle in the Celtic mythology. The Celtic goddess Morrigan often is symbolized by a black crow and is called The Ravenqueen, She stands for wisdom and cunning but also is connected to battle and war. She is the crow of the battlefield who carries the fallen heroes away like the Valkyries. But she also is the warrior swooping on the enemy like an eagle. She often is pictured as a bird taking off as a crow and landing as an eagle. So the Raven in the name and the Eagle in the crest are the same.

AnnieBlackmore This... this is such an underrated response. If (IF) there’s a logical reason for the inconsistency, this makes the most sense to me. It’s smart but not overly complicated, unlike most unrealistic fan theories. Writers make mistakes, and sometimes just don’t make any sense. If Rowling had a good reason for the inconsistency, I imagine a direct correlation to mythology would be it. Most of the house symbolisms and magical creatures in her books are based on real and not excessively obscure mythology. I don’t see why this matter would be any different.

2 years later All the merch uses Ravens instead of Eagles! The Ravenclaw colors are blue and BRONZE

That's one thing that irritates me about the Wizarding World, they do Ravenclaw a disservice by making all of the merch look as it appears in the films rather as described in the books, I have a Ravenclaw mug that has a raven on the crest, but then on the Hogwarts logo that also appears it has an eagle, so some serious continuity errors there.

@@TheTradge we have more options I think its cool. I honestly think the blue and Silver look better. I Just dont think bronze (Brown) looks good with the navy blue they used in the film, it should have been a lighter blue in order for the blue and Bronze combination to work, so for the navy blue I prefer the silver.

He said ground, but the fourth of the elements has been referred to as Earth, rock, and soil as well as ground. So he isn't incorrect in saying ground is one of the four elements if that is what you're implicating. However, I will grant you that utilizing the term ground in this context sounded unmelodic, but I don't feel that was your implication was it?

We found out Ravens are the smartest bird in 2000’s. Hogwarts was founded in 1000’s.

But Ravens aren't the smartest bird despite what the video make said. There's several species of birds found to be smarter including magpies who passed the mirror test when Ravens did not, and crows which have found to have better memory than Ravens.

@@AbdullahToorMystic I never said they weren't smart, just that it's inaccurate to say they were found to be the smartest, when they weren't. Though you saying we only discovered their intelligence levels in modern times is also inaccurate. Though there's weren't scientific finding on them yet, ravens have been long known for their intelligence for thousands of years regardless, as can be seen in things like how clever and crafty they often were in folk tales from ancient times often playing the trickster archetype.

Ravenclaw here!!! And is it possible that Rowen a made the mascot an eagle so that people would question it? She wanted the most intelligent people in her house so maybe she did it as a sort of test to see what people could come up with. That's the big answer there never was an answer other than Rowen wanting to seem smarter than everybody because they couldn't figure out why she chose an eagle. ......and ravenclaw is bronze not gold

BTW the eagle on the house crest is bronze. The colours according to the book are bronze and blue but the movie says silver and blue. But gold isn't, never have and never will be part of ravenclaw's colours. Also I am a ravenclaw.

"Golden Eagle" describes the species, not its color. So the animal on the Ravenclaw house crest is a bronze golden eagle. It's confusing lol. And I guess while we're stating our houses I'm apparently Gryffindor but I wanted to be Ravenclaw.

The species Golden Eagle is actually very Bronze coloured in my opinion and the Eagle on the badge of Ravenclaw seems to be part of that species so I think that explains it

Why do we question Ravenclaw using an eagle instead of a raven but not Gryffindor using a lion instead of a Gryphon, which fits much better with his name? Slytherin didn't pick a snake because of his name including the term slither, but rather because he is serpent tongue. As a Ravenclaw, I'm less confused by why my house symbol is an eagle and more wondering why virtually all ravenclaw merchandise insists on using a raven despite it NOT being my house symbol

Yes but as the video states, Ravens are smarter than eagles and that is something Rowena prized but after. Thinking about it I think it was her style to go into more complex reasoning to find her house symbole than just. Ravens are the smartest birds in the world. (Or one of them).

As a ravenclaw, I love the fact that our mascot confuses people. We value intelligence, we answer riddles to enter our common room.. it makes total sense to me that our mascot would not match our name. We are intrinsically a complicated group of thinkers, we enjoy learning and deciphering the hidden meanings behind symbolism. Therefore, our mascot is an eagle rather than a raven to tell the world we don’t take information at face value. By choosing an eagle as the ravenclaw mascot, I believe this was JK’s way of highlighting the traits of ravenclaw including a nod to their tendency to consider themselves better than the other house because they are the most intelligent ie “if you don’t understand why our mascot is an Eagle you obviously aren’t a ravenclaw”..

As a ravenclaw myself, the mascot of Ravenclaw house being an eagle makes perfect sense to me. Ravenclaw is not just the house of logic and intellect, but the house of creativity, of challenging norms, of magical pioneers who go places and do things with magic that others would never even think of. An eagle soars higher than anyone else, finding it's home soaring amongst the clouds, where the air is sharp and clean. And the dreams of a true ravenclaw go to the same place.

I'm in Ravenclaw, first we are Bronze and Royal Blue, Gold is a Gryffindor color! Speaking of their lineage, it ends in Ravenclaw, as it began, Helena being the last living Ravenclaw family relative alive we know of, who could reproduce into more of the namesake of the house, Ravens are also known as quirky in all I've read that includes them, another trait our house prizes.

This is actually pretty logical for the most part. I do have three things to point out though. 1. The Gryffindor emblem should have been a griffin by this logic, not a lion. 2. Its blue and BRONZE not blue and gold. 3. It seems very unlikely that when Albania was referred to when talking about Voldemort it could have been Scotland. I think it makes more sense that Albania was Scotland during the Ravenclaws' time, but Voldemort misunderstood and went to the country of Albania. This is a problem with the diadem though, unless he found it in Scotland and thought someone else found it before him and moved it.

If Helena Ravenclaw did go to what is known today as Albania, she probably did so to be very far away from her mother. There was also the prospect of joining important places, the great cities of the 11th century, like Constantinople, the than capital of the *Byzantine Empire*. Albania, the place we're talking about, is where she hid the diadem, it doesn't have to be exactly were she tried to make a name for herself.

Did you look up the definition of a glen? It's a narrow valley, which Albania does have. In the book, "Travels in the Ionian Isles, Albania, Thessaly, Macedonia, Etc. During the Years 1812 and 1913", the author Henry Holland describes the vale of Deropuli, or Argyro-Kastrro on page 483... "This great vale is perhaps the most populous district in Albania. The inhabiants are collected into numerous towns and villages, which are situated on the lower declivity of the mountains on each side; or on the western side generally at the opening of the deep glens which descend to the plain."

You were on to something when you said "glen"; Glen doesn't necessarily mean Scotland, glen also refers to a small river/stream/brook. In the book, glen is spelled with a lower case g, meaning it's not a place name. It means a glen. Rowena Ravenclaw was from a place near small stream (a glen) , which could be anywhere - including Albania

Note that "baron" in Great Britain was a title introduced in England, with the Norman Conquest (1066) Records of baronies can't be found before later (Domesday Book survey of 1086) but it's obvious baronies in England came with the norman invasion, decades after the foundation of Hogwarts.

I'm OK with this theory, but I'm 100% standing by the animals of the houses being the corresponding patronuses (patroni?) of the founders, which would explain why they fit so well. Btw, I'm a Gryffindor! Rawr!

That's true, but I'm not into the raven-CLAWED part of the whole thing. As well as the Albania connection. It's cool, but too far-fetched for me. Even though the house colors he referenced aren't quite right (I mean, it's blue and bronze, as has been said in this comment section 500 times), I'm into the family crest being a golden eagle, and that connection.

Bronze is a tricky color. It can look gold, with brown or copper tint. Newer bronze, anyway. Forgivable mistake just from looking at the metals. But I agree with the sentiment, esp after all the research and all, that he could have gotten the name of the color right.

I'm one of the awesome ravenclaws. How it relates to my own heritage is that although I am American, I also have heritage in Scotland. A happy coincidence
