One theory, that I have is that Voldemort did not buy the diary (Harry make assumption but it is not confirmed by Voldemort). But he stole the diary from Mirthle. I have several clues to suport this : - first we know that Voldemort like to steal trinket from past mischief (I am thinking of the small box of stolen trinket in the orphanage) - second every other horcruxes has been stolen (even Nagini might have been "released" from a zoo)

In short, I consider this theory canon.

Just because Myrtle's death wasn't planed, the diary would still be seen as an important object to Riddle, because it was his diary. Riddle's own hubris made that diary an important item.

But why did Voldy make the diary a horcrux at all? Why not just kill Myrtle and go on about his day? It would make sense if this was his first, but being the second, I don't see why he made it. Did he just desperately want to pump those numbers up? Also, isn't the process of making a horcrux supposed to be pretty intense? This would imply to me that it takes more than a few seconds. How did he have time to create the horcrux without hanging around the scene of a murder for a suspiciously long time?

I kniw canonicly it is a horcrux however it almost seems to me like it isnt one. It almost feels more Iike a combination of a horcrux and the magical paintings and something else. Sure it could store a part of him but it also took his character and memories up until that part bit unlike any other type of horcrux we have seem the diary could actively resurect him from thin air. Perhaps he and certainly lucius didnt truly know what he had made as if they wanted all they needed was to kidnap someone and lock them up with the diary and within a year voldemort would have returned far away from harry who by sheer luck would survive the basilisk and stab the diary

In dungeons and dragons lore, the basilisk has its petrifying gaze because of radiation that emit from its eyes and that’s what causes the death glare. Could also explain the lore of all vegetation dying around basilisks in old lore: some kind of magical radiation

What if the purpose of the diary was not only meant to reopen the chamber but also meant to form a younger body for Voldemort to use if something happened to his original? I mean, young Riddle was dead set with absorbing Jenny's life force to become whole. He might have been able to sense the specter to bond with once again.

My counter argument is that Myrtle was the first person Voldemort killed. This signified that he had passed the point of no return, stopped being Tom Riddle and truly became Lord Voldemort. It wouldn't surprise me if he still felt trepidations about his aspirations to become a dark wizard before this happened which is why he used the basilisk to do the deed. I don't know if he cared at all about the part of his soul that he left in the diary but the way it was created was probably deeply significant to him. The fact that it happened to a muggle born nobody solidified his world view perfectly for him. He couldn't go back so he could only double down and continue down the path of becoming Lord Voldemort making this the moment that he found resolution in his beliefs. I would argue that the diary was the MOST meaningful horcrux.

A very problematic theory. Dumbledore as much as he trusted Hagrid would not want the Dark Lord's wand itself in his hut, susceptible to be stolen when he's out most of the day doing grounds keeping. Plus, Hagrid is not allowed to own a wand AT ALL, meaning if any ministry official came for any reason would immediately question and or confiscate it purely because it's in Hagrid's possession. Additionally, Hagrid befriends students who spend time in his hut and any one of them could fancy themselves a wand laying there, think Fred and George just taking things,. There's no way Dumbledore would allow it to stay there, unprotected by magic It's much simpler idea to think the wand was stashed somewhere after the Potter attack and retrieved after Wormtail was caught out.

There’s murder then there’s killing. 2 different things. Murder is the taking of one’s life without reason. Legal killing is the taking of life to provide defense/provision of another.
