The best part about having a KZfaq channel, post-getting my English degree, is easily that I get to plan out videos like this basically the same way I used to plan out my essays. But now that I'm the only one in charge, all my essays get to be about Harry Potter. It's pretty win-win. Anyway, what do you think about my opinion regarding Harry Potter's job post-series?
P.S. in case you didn't guess, spoilers for the end of the HP series aplenty lie ahead!

In my head, Harry did join the Auror department right after school ended to help "clean things up" but I think after a few years, he would have applied to be a DADA professor. He would have really don't a great job, and he would have lived it, so the kids would have really loved it.

Slightly unrelated but I remember JK Rowling saying somewhere that Harry and Ron didn't finish their final year of Hogwarts and I always thought it was a bit odd. I mean I understand them maybe wanting to take time to process everything that happened, but I just never thought he would deny the last chance to live in the first place he ever called home. If he became a teacher, well then, problem solved. But that has always been something that has stuck out to me and bothered me.

yesyesyes I agree completely. Harry so should've been a professor. also hARRY AND GINNY WOULD'VE BEEN 23/24 WHEN THEY HAD CHILDREN. Yes to all the points you made about Harry and probably not wanting to have children right away, but also Ginny was a professional quidditch player, and most likely super career driven, I can't see her putting that on hold for several years to have children. On the harry potter wiki page it says she retired and then had children, but would that mean retiring at 23??? Cause that's sO young to retire from a professional sports position. I don't buy it.
@ProblemsofaBookNerd
@ProblemsofaBookNerd 7 жыл бұрын
After I filmed this, my girlfriend and I also did the math on Ginny and I think it is sooo upsetting. I mean, retiring at 23 is already not something I see for Ginny, but that would mean she was having kids during her best athletic years?? As a professional quidditch player?? It really seems like such nonsense.
@rosvokisu
@rosvokisu 6 жыл бұрын
I feel like this is just some stupidly normative and old-fashioned nonsense JKR is enforcing in the HP series. SUre Ginny is going to retire from her professional quidditch player position at 23 to have kids "beCAUSe sHe iS a WoMaN and WoMeN nEED tO HavE KIDS!!" or something like that. Ok, maybe that's not a very conscious thought from her because she claims to be some sort of an activist or whatever but still it seems like all of her narratives are enforcing that kind of normative life for everyone because that's what people "should do" or because that's the "normal thing". Hermione might not be as young when she and Ron have kids, but she's still not very old either, like what, 26? like what do you mean everyone had kids before the age of 30? I mean, JKR's books are too good for her imho.

I love the idea of Harry being a professor because of the symmetry it brings to the Voldemort, Snape, Harry and the three brothers story. Also so many of my feelings about Snape come from how horrible his life was and maybe if he had a different life at Hogwarts would he have turned out different. Harry could be that person at Hogwarts who sees those kids that come from unhappy homes and he could change their lives. He knows the stories of both Voldemort and Snape and he could recognize when a child was going down a path similar to theirs and he could help them.

THIS!! ALL OF THIS!! I basically act as though anything that J.K. Rowling has said post-Deathly Hallows hasn't actually been said, which makes the series much more enjoyable. Harry would have been a PERFECT Defense Against The Dark Arts professor and I will fight anyone who says otherwise! I just can't see Harry, after all the trauma and death that he has seen and experience, would want to continually be thrown into more positions of trauma and death. I envision him wanting to teach generations of Hogwarts students how to protect and defend themselves and those they care about so THEY never have to experience the death and trauma that he had to experience at such a young age. I have SO many feelings about this and I could go on for ages, I absolutely adore your HP Chats series! Opening up these dialogues and discussions about Harry Potter bring me so much joy and you do such a great job at bringing up these points and defending your stance. Keep up the wonderful work, Cece!

I agree, Harry *needed* to be a teacher. Although, I will point out that Harry didn't immediately have children. If you do the math, you will find Harry was 23 when his oldest child James was born, which means his birth was 6 years after The Battle of Hogwarts. I think a lot can change in 6 years. I like to think Harry didn't know he needed to be a teacher (he's not really a self-aware kinda guy) until around mid-life, and then changed careers. I just see him going to a really dark place after the kids grow up and leaving home, Ginny working long hours as the editor of the Prophet, and having such a dark job after such a traumatic life. How depressing. He needs to be a teacher, and be at Hogwarts, as much as Hogwarts need hims.

I laughed at the part where you reiterated how you don't care about what J.K. says. Because I don't either... It's true that the ending of HP seemed to happy, and no PTSD happened to any of them - like any of them! (see HP8). Also, being an Auror was overhyped as a profession in terms of changing the world. Your point on him and Neville making a foster home for Children who are abused will definitely change the world a whole lot more.

I don't get the argument that Harry can't be a professor AND have a family. So what, in order to be a professor at Hogwarts you have to be eternally single and childless? I'm sure there have been professors over the years who have had families, they could just apparate home in the evenings from outside the school boundaries, right? Or their family could live with them at Hogwarts, I'm sure there's a spare set of rooms somewhere in a giant castle. Or they could live in Hogsmeade, so they''d be close in case there was a family emergency during the day.

Nah, he could, I just think she wanted to state, tat it just felt a bit forced that he got kids so fast. I think there is even magical contraception, so it probably wasn't an accident or something. I am still sure harry became a proffesor at some point (maybe after his childs finished the school) and maybe even headmaster, like dumbledore was. I mean he adored that man and blindly followed him.

Why not....both? Harry went through some terrible stuff because of one dark wizard, so it's not unreasonable to think that after Voldemort, he would want to do what he could to make sure that didn't happen to another child. I'm not saying this is necessarily a good decision, but it is one I think he would make. After all, he was 17 when voldemort died. He'd have the arrogance of youth, and victory to egg him on. But then, because he's wise after a few years of this, he'd realize he didn't like it. He'd realize how it was effecting him, and then he'd go for the DADA position. After all, didn't he hear Dumbledore tell Voldie himself that in order to be a good teacher he'd need more life experince? So i'm firmly on the side of the both argument. To me, it would make sense for that to all comalate when he found out Ginny was Prego. Suddenly, he wouldn't want a dangerous job because he wouldn't want to leave a child parentless. That's when he'd go out for the DADA position. (And who says he can't floo home at the end of the day to be with his kids? Why not?)

Definitely. Rowling puts such emphasis (in the books and outside of them) that Riddle, Snape, and Harry are this trio of characters that represent bad, gray, and good people. And while it's not an official starting point of the story, Riddle cursed the job because he couldn't have it and Snape was essentially forced by Dumbledore to stay at Hogwarts just out of reach of the only job he'd want while there. Harry being the good DADA teacher he should have had while at Hogwarts seems like such a more natural storytelling element (I'm a big 'circle theory' person), especially with how much thought she puts into everything. (And while I appreciate the sentiment of "Harry went on to have a family and kids. Look he's normal and not traumatized." that the epilogue has, I definitely agree that it's probably not what should have/would have happened.)

All of this! Literally all of this. DADA Professor Harry is by far one of my favorite things to have come out of fanon, especially if he's working alongside Neville who's teaching Herbology. And that foster care/summer home idea sounds absolutely lovely. I agree with your point about Harry and Ginny having kids. I'm one of the many who simply chooses not to acknowledge the epilogue. When I first read the series as a kid, I expected Harry to become Headmaster when he grew up (which I guess is just an extension of him being a teacher). He'd be running a place he loves, following in Dumbledore's footsteps, and he's hire good teachers because he has experienced first hand the effect a good teacher like Lupin or a bad teacher (like too many to mention) could have.

I never really questioned Harry becoming an auror until I started watching you, and I completely agree with him being a better professor than an auror. I would also like to add that DADA had just become Dark Arts during his seventh year, which was a part in tearing apart the place Harry called home, tearing apart the place where he grew to know one of his father's best friends and tearing apart the place where he had found people that loved him for who he was. I like to believe that Harry would have wanted to help put Hogwarts back together after the battle, and thus becoming a professor in the process. Professor Harry is amazing and I will forever be upset that it didn't happen.

YES! My thoughts exactly about Harry being a teacher: there was no place that Harry thought of as home more than Hogwarts, and doesn't it make perfect sense that he would be teaching Defence against the Dark Arts? He was better at it than even Hermione, and to me, Harry filling up that position would be a nice way to show how the curse on that teaching post was lifted.

I can truly see it both ways, there are some solid points on the other side, but I have to say I do think Harry being a DATDA professor makes more narrative sense. It's where I used to think the story would go after reading OotP the first time, and I was surprised it didn't. However, I feel like it would also be plausible for him to have started out as an auror, doing what he could to make the ministry better while he raised his family, and then perhaps once his kids were out of school, go on to be a professor. Why not have it both ways? ;)

I completely agree with this! I just finished rereading OoTP yesterday and it completely reinforced my opinion (slightly influenced by yours) that Harry would of been the best Professor. I mean, come on! He got a set of 'excellent' books from Sirius and Lupin and his first thought was how useful they would be for lesson plans. He also is said to be 'swelling with pride' as he sees his students progress. Not to mention that when the DA was caught by Umbridge he only thought of what would happen to everyone else, showing what a caring and considerate teacher he would be.

I stand with you on the fact that whatever JKR says about Harry Potter (and was not canon written in the books) I just don't really care about?? Like Hermione never would've become the Minister for Magic -- maybe one day she would've, but I still can't really see it. Although I don't see the Cursed Child as canon anyway, so... yeah. There's this fic I read, it's called "Put Your Guns Away, It's Tea Time" and it's just fucking perfect. There are sequels to it too, and Harry becomes a DADA teacher and shit it's amazing. It's basically about the summer after TCC, some sort of fix-it fic. The dynamic between Harry and his kids is just the best. Back to the teaching point, I completely agree with you. And I on Tumblr (and in that fic) I saw the best solution for the fact that Harry is away from his kids: the Floo. In the fic, the writer states that Neville Floos every day from Hogwarts to The Leaky Cauldron, where his wife, Hannah, is the barkeeper (a thing JKR confirmed that I really like, despite everything else she's said). I think that that's what they would do, it just seems logical to me. Also, how would other teachers at Hogwarts do it? I don't assume they all live at Hogwarts, because this way you can only be a teacher if you don't have a family and that just doesn't seem very likely to me. And to the point that Harry and Ginny wouldn't have children so early, I agree. When I was ten and I finished Deathly Hallows, I did a lot of maths. Me, being smoll and having dyscalculia, wasn't really sure what I was doing. What I did know, was that I had eventually the right answer: Harry and Ginny got kids when they were twenty and twenty-one (or something, I don't remember). Ron and Hermione were only a year older when they decided to have kids. And Draco and Astoria were also really young. I think it's a little weird that all the straight couples settle down and have kids really young. People don't all do that, at least not anymore. Most people now get kids when they're like 27 or something. (Another issue: everyone is straight. But that's for another day.) Sorry that this got so long, I didn't intend it to be lol.

Reasons he might have been drawn to being and auror is that that was what he'd become acquainted to. You look at some war vets and they get to a position where a warzone is the only place they feel comfortable or belong. He himself experienced what dark wizards can do to innocent families and perhaps he felt an obligation to those like him. JK said he and Ron cleared out the corruption within the department which could also have driven him to join. After that he very well could have been potentially one of the greatest defence against the dark arts teacher.

Although I do see your point and agree with it, I do think he might have made up with the ministry after the war because I think it probably changed a lot, starting with Kingsley's appointment as temporary Minister of Magic. And he did have positive rep of ministry workers in some of the Aurors who are Order members. But I definitely agree that his characterization definitely goes against him becoming anything but a teacher. IAnd also oh my god yes I can't believe they would settle down so fast.

I through that Harry and Ron would have start the Auror training together, but I think that after a year or so Harry would have left and apply as a professor. I see Ron more fitted to be a cop, even just cause he’s always right! (Just check the books, every time he get exactly what’s happening even if in s joke) But I think he would eventually leave as well, maybe for helping George in the shop.

I've never considered that Harry wouldn't go on to become an auror (I am a person who doesn't like straying from canon), but you have me 100% convinced (and also crying lol). Thinking about it now, it's actually surprising to me that jk Rowling didn't do this, her character development for everyone throughout the series is excellent. But I do agree that the epilogue strays from characterization a bit and seems tacked on more than well though out. Thank you for this perspective ❤️

I've seen lots of arguments for both sides, but this has definitely nudged me toward the professor career... I have always headcanoned Harry to start some sort of orphanage/ foster care system, which would probably be easier from the position of a teacher. Great video!

JK consistently made the mistake of forcing what SHE wants in life onto her characters. She wanted kids, she thought having them was the best thing to ever happen to her (she was near homeless and on gov support at the time, so take of that what you will), so she made ALL of her characters want, and have, kids. This is something she does with a few others bits about her characters too.

one thing you didn't mention is how fitting it would have been to have Harry eventually become Headmaster having the same inspiration, influence and power, while still being outside the government and an independent voice for/against politics, like Dumbledore was.

I completely agree about Harry being a teacher and I agree with all of your points. That being said, I once read a fanfic where Harry was an Unspeakable, and now I cannot see him being much else. The fic was called The Boy Who Only Lived Twice by lettered (it's a drarry fic so if you're going to read it, I wanted you to know that) but in it, I found the best fandom characterized Harry I have found yet, but also a completely valid reason for him to be an Unspeakable. I really recommend it, if you're interested. It's actually my favorite piece of literature ever written. Like better than my favorite book even.

My Opinions on this subject(A LOT of Headcanon warning!) I think that Harry wouldn't have gone back to school nor gone straight into the auror's after defeating voldemort. I think he would have taken a year at least to get himself back together and start working on getting the orphans from the war into good homes. After piecing himself partially back together(With tape and glue!) I think he would've worked with a group called Phoenix, comprised of some OOTP members but also other to clean up some deatheaters and bring people back who had to flee due to the corrupt ministry. After the death eaters were no longer a threat I think that he would've gone back to hogwarts and taught with Neville as Herbology professor. Also mini rant here- Hermione would not have gone back to re-do her seventh year! Gahh! Okay, yes school was incredibly important to Hermione, before her best friend literally DIED, Dead. Out of the three main trio honestly the most likely to become an Auror would've been Hermione. She was tortured by Death eaters at malfoy manor and she couldn't have conciously gone back to school knowing they could were still on the loose and could torture other people. I truly believe she couldn't, she couldn't be safe in hogwarts knowing that other people still weren't. Just my Headcanon!

God I need to finish the books but I HAVE the Dursleys so much that I can't. Also I have MASSIVE issues with Dumbledore and Menerva KNOWINGLY leaving an INFANT in the care of abusive Muggles. REALLY?! This child who's the only son of friends of yours who were murdered, who's the sole survivor of a massacre on the Wizarding World, ISN'T going to be protected?! Are you TRYING to give him complex PTSD?! Hagrid or Menerva or Sirius couldn't raise him?!

I will have to disagree with you on the point that he had his childhood taken away. You can't take away something that someone never had. The more apt description was he was robbed of the opportunity to have a childhood. As for your point about Harry should have become a teacher, you're spot on. I more saw him in his adult life as being a defense against the dark arts teacher.

I can see Harry being a teacher, although I can see him wanting to help clean up the wizarding world first so I propose: he's first an auror for several years (he has his kids and maybe downsizes his hours at the ministry, Ginny had James at 25). Then when all of his kids are done with school he would retire into a teaching position until he's dead.

Agree with everything!!! I always pictured Harry as a teacher after I read OotP. It just made so much more sense and I think Remus would have been a big inspiration. Harry hates the battles almost as much as Hermione, why would he ever make that his career?! I really liked the fireman analogy for it. I also definitely agree about Harry and Ginny having kids. Especially when you consider how much longer wizards live, I feel like they would have waited longer. I think Ginny would have wanted (and did deserve) more years on the Harpies. Plus I think everyone in their years mostly likely had some major cases of PTSD to work through after a major battle IN THEIR BOARDING SCHOOL before they got down to marriages or kids. So you saw that Tumblr post about the children's home too? I love that headcanon. Also I enjoy the Tumblr headcanons that when it came to a sense of humor, Remus was actually the snarkiest/sassiest/most sarcastic of the Marauders

i do absoluteley agree that Harry's passion is teaching DDA. However i think it would be cool for him to at least visit Auror-school (also because him getting the required marks to do so is kind of a thing in the books) and maybe even work as an Auror (which is not a wizard cop btw.) for several years. After all the government can change over time. Ppl like Dolores Umbridge wont work their any longer (especially after she was a key-figure in 2 main-fails of the ministry) and the ministry, at the time when Harry finishes Auror school could very well be an attractive institution to work for (maybe some of his fellow-students work there too etc.). To give you my own version of the story this is exactly what he does. However at some point (after 7 years being an auror) he stumbles across the announcement that Hogwarts is searching for a new DDA-teacher and realizes that this is exactly what he truly wants (being an auror is already boring to him at this point, after all it does involve quite some paper-work). He applies for it and immediately gets the job (because if a veteran auror (hunter of dark magic, basically) of the name Harry Potter asks you for the job as DDA-teacher u give it to him) In my version of "old Harry" he is a bit of an Alastor Moody. Not quite as paranoid (i would have him drink only from his flask, though (also because at some point in the books he considers to adapt this specific "Moody-behaviour")) and not quite as scarred (i would leave him all his limbs and both eyes but i would give him a few additional scars) and much more hearty but in the general direction. Just imagine the students when its announced that the legendary Harry James Potter is going to be their new DDA-teacher... one of my favourite moments to think of.... Thats like getting introduced to your new trainer at the gym, Hercules..... 08:35 - minor Nitpick here: Snape did never control the elder wand

Can we talk about how revealing it is that a common argument IN FAVOUR of Harry being a wizard-cop is that he's "hot-headed"??????? Because if THAT'S any part of your argument for Harry's acceptability for being an auror.... my god, there's a lot to extrapolate there.

There is no reason that a teacher HAS to live at Hogwarts. And actually, we know that some don’t. When McGonagall was married, she lived in Hogsmeade with her husband, and walked to work every day. There’s no reason why Harry couldn’t do the same. Or, if they didn’t want to live in Hogsmeade (though I totally would), he could either apparate to Hogsmeade and walk, or he could commute via the Floo Network. Teachers can live at Hogwarts if they wish (and there would need to be a certain number of staff that spend the night there, though that could be done in shifts if there aren’t enough teachers living there). But living there is not something that they *need* to do. And yeah, I definitely agree that Harry should have become DADA teacher instead of an Auror. Though I can definitely see Hermione wanting to go into the Ministry in order to change it, and also how nonwizard persons are treated (I believe that’s the specific department that Hermione went into). As for Ron, I read an excellent headcanon (on another video for this channel, I believe), that says he went into invention- specifically marrying Muggle tech with magic, inventing the fellytone, and even a wizarding equivalent of a smart phone. It’s something that allows him to stand out, be successful (he was ambitious), and builds on his father’s love for all things Muggle.

There are definitely valid arguments against him being an Auror (e.g. his famous declaration he had enough trouble for a lifetime) even though I could see him valid reasons for it. I'm not sure how keen Harry was in teaching DADA based on the books compared with say playing Quidditch. Remember how he dropped the DA as soon as Umbridge was gone even though it would have made so much sense to keep it going to prepare everyone against Voldemort? Nope, we got Quidditch and snogging instead.

I have a counterpoint. If Harry agreed that the ministry was so useless and unable to perform, wouldn’t it make sense that he’d want to be a part of the reason why the ministry performs better. Also. The person he loved and admired the most was Sirius Black, his godfather who was an auror. Someone he looked up to. It would make sense that he would want to be like his godfather, knowing that his godfather was doing something noble.

That isn’t how blood status works in the series. Harry’s mother is muggleborn so he is not a pureblood. Lily is bullied for this, and early on Harry is also teased for having “muggle” blood. It’s certainly not as clear cut as the hatred leveled against Hermione, but he isn’t free from the questions and taunts about blood status. Ron’s family is the only one of the three to be considered pureblood by wizarding society.

i always thought it odd that the one who always wanted to be 'just Harry' would take a job that would constantly be flaunting the whole 'Chosen One' and 'Conqueror' titles whether he wanted to or not. He should have disappeared for a few years post-war to recover and come back finally comfortable with who he is. i never understood marrying so soon after Hogwarts considering wizards are supposed to live much longer than muggles.

two things: 1.: Harry doesn't have the requirements for becoming an Auror, as he refuses to finish school 2.: Why are there no families living in Hogsmead? It is NEVER mentioned, that there are ANY children living there, although it is said to be the ONLY settlement in GB exclusively inhabited by wizards and witches. If I were a witch with a magical spouse I would totally move there, as my kids COULD NOT threaten the status of secrecy. And when they are in school they can visit me on the weekends. The distance to work would be no problem because of the flewnetwork. Admittedly it would be pretty pointless to travel to hogwarts to put my kid in a train, that drove them back home...
