Definitely believe that Neville being the chosen one being thrown off as a fan theory happened because it wasn't in the movies. There's a lot of people who are massive Harry Potter fans but haven't even glanced at the books. I have a friend who's like this and every time she discovers something she didn't know about the Potterverse, she tells me just to be met with "Yep, knew that for years. It's in the book."

I love and adore Neville and I am honestly teary eyed right now. I feel like the moment in the first book when Dumbledore awards Neville those 10 points is made so much stronger when you take into consideration Dumbledore's backstory, how freakin Dumbledore didn't have the courage to stand up to Grindelwald for so long because they were friends, but Neville had that courage at 11! And I think the fact that Neville's biggest fear was Snape (as opposed to Bellatrix who literally tortured his parents which just breaks my heart and makes me want to scream at the same time), yet he still faced that every time he had a Potions class. Someone once said it would be like putting Harry up against a dementor, or Ron against spiders every week for years and just like how amazing is this boy? I am so glad you touched on the parallels with Neville and Peter because it shows how much one person and one person's choices can impact the history of the entire wizarding world. Also, 'own up to your evil Gryffindors, people', yes, thank you!

My favorite Neville Longbottom moments is when he has chosen not to do Herbology because of a comment his grandmother made and I just love when Minerva tells him how rubbish his grandmother was at Herbology.Suck on that Grandmother Longbottom

I love this. This is how I feel about Harry as a character. I feel like people see him as Harry Potter and never actually look at the things he's had to face. He was neglected and abused his entire life and is thrust into this world where everyone knows who he is, but he doesn't. Could you imagine having all of these things thrown on your lap at eleven years old? He has to deal with Ron's jealousy over things he can't help, is bullied by a professor who absolutely should be on his side. But most of all, could you just imagine what it must have been like to have an old wizard want to kill you for something you can't help? His entire life was derailed because of Voldemort, yet he had to deal with the fact that he wanted to kill him for things he'd caused. He has to deal with the fact that so many people close to him end up dying because of this obsession he never asked for. Could you imagine the emotional scarring that comes with having a man who's obsessed with destroying your life invading your thoughts and dreams and controlling you just because he can get in his head? I see Harry for all of the little things that make him that people overlook because they see him as the kid who went through all of the adventures without considering how scarring all of it must have been.

Much as I love the character of Harry Potter, I would have liked the series to have been by Neville's point of view...I am a huge fan of the 'Under dog' type characters. And I too really love that he became Hogwarts Herbology professor. I would not be surprised to hear that he became Headmaster at some point too, he definitely has the chops to be very protective of the students even at the cost of his own life, but also fair in his judgements and to an extent openminded. I did however think he was going to wind up with Luna Lovegood, though...lol.

I thought that it was interesting that he looked up to his father so much that he took it to Hogwarts instead of buying a wand. So I really looked up to him for attempting to learn magic with a wand that was not suited for him because he did better than Tom Riddle when he used someone else's wand.

You have said so many things and more that made me realize that Neville is actually my favourite character as well! Thanks for that ! :)

Neville and Hermione actually weren't hat stalls! They were just the longest in their year. The only hat stalls we know of are McGonagall and Flitwick, for both of whom the hat couldn't choose between Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, and of course came to the opposite conclusion.

Neville has always been my favourite character for all the reasons you stated almost to the point where I have to say "Get out of my head". I relate to him the most out of all the characters in many ways.

ron is my favorite. he's the glue that keeps everything together, and he always makes me smile. plus my husband is a redhead jokester (i always say ron is my second favorite redhead). that and i love hermione and ron together (from the very first book when they were on the train together i said they would get married some day).

This is well over a year old, but I just had to comment, because I wanted to thank you. Neville is tied as my favorite character with Luna and I have loved him since book one too. I hate when people say people only love him because of book 7 because I'm just like...did you pay any attention to him any other year? He has low key been keeping the trio afloat for 7 years by Deathly Hallows, how does no one notice this? Like, I think the moment I knew I loved him was when he tried to fight Crabbe and Goyle at the Quidditch game. He literally took on two guys twice his size. Don't anyone ever tell me this precious boy wasn't brave! I just appreciate so much that this video exists.

Although Neville is not a close friend of the Trio, yet he also gets a lot of - and important - support from them. In book one Malfoy bullies Neville, hits him with a leg locking curse. Hermione tells him to report it, and Ron tells him he should stand up to Malfoy. Neville sadly says that Malfoy also said he was not brave enough to be in Gryffindor. Then Harry gives Neville a Chocolate Frog and says: 'You're worth twelve of Malfoy. The Sorting Hat chose you for Gryffindor, didn't it? And where's Malfoy? In stinking Slytherin.' This must have been a very important moment for Neville, the famous Harry Potter defending him. How do we know? At the Quidditch match shortly afterwards Malfoy offends Neville: 'You know how I think they choose people for the Gryffindor team? It's people they feel sorry for. See, there's Potter, who's got no parents, then there's the Weasleys, who've got no money - you should be on the team, Longbottom, you've got no brains.' Neville went bright red, but turned in his seat to face Malfoy. 'I'm worth twelve of you, Malfoy,' he stammered.

Your passion is contagious...reminded me after all these years how much i love him too. The part where neville's mom gives him crumbled up candy wrapper and wanders off is the most heartbreaking scene in the entire series, there's no competition in my mind..it's the implication that neville treasures each one despite his grandmother commenting how he could cover his walls with all that trash. But they're important to him because he got them from his mother. ;_; i'd love to give him a hug too.

If I could, I would make every Potter fan (and non fans bc Neville deserves all the love) watch this video. I actually teared up watching this. I loved watching neville's growth and getting to grow with him myself with every book.

I have never felt more understood. Also I totally believe that Neville and Ginny should have ended up together. Book four man, it held some v important things imo. Also fave character status goes to Lupin, Neville, Ginny, and Hermione.

I have always loved Neville Longbottom, I will ALWAYS love Neville Longbottom. I swing back and forth on whether he was the 'actual chosen one', if you will, but to some extent I think he is. The fate of the entire wizarding world was sealed by Nevilles action of killing Nagini. After everything the Trio went through to defeat voldemort, after everything Harry suffered, it was still Neville who ultimately saved the wizarding world in that moment. Without him, it all would have been for nought and YOU KNOW WHAT Neville is MY chosen one I adore him

I love Neville Longbottom as a character, but Hermione Granger will always have a special place in my heart as the character that taught me that being book smart is alright. It's honestly so difficult to decide on a favourite character, because they all mean so much to me.

I had never heard the parallel between the trio & Neville and the Marauders before! I actually really see it though, and it does make sense with how much Rowling loves parallels, especially in the last book. I absolutely adore Neville because I saw so much of myself in him, especially as a shy, awkward little kid who was reading Harry Potter for the first time. I love the message that Neville's bravery is just as important as Harry, Hermione, and Ron's even if it manifests in a different way. I remember crying at the last book when I read it for myself and then tearing up when all my friends were saying they loved him after the seventh book. Neville is the best.

Oh gosh, I am tearing up. This is bringing all the Harry Potter feels. Neville is the quiet hero that is always there by the trios side when it matters. My top 3 HP characters are probably Percy Weasley(which many think is odd, but I have my reasons), Luna Lovegood, and of course Neville Longbottom. Also many other characters.

He reminds me of myself when I was very young and I connected with him in how he was a loner and basically relied upon himself to build his inner strength and confidence. I love this. I just stumbled over your video on Ron and had to see this one, too. To me, Neville is the bravest and strongest character of all, he is the invisible hero in the background that saves the day without anyone really realizing it. When I read that he and Harry were born on the same day, my very first thought was the question whether he was the true chosen one or not. I mean, Harry is brave and strong and dedicating, BUT because of his hot-headedness (sorry if I wrote that one wrong) he would never have survived without Ron and Hermione. He needs a group. But Neville? He haas been fighting his whole life, without ANY help, not even from his own grandmother. Especially with his parents. When Harry arrives at Hogwarts, his loner life is over and his friends even go so far as to safe him from the Dursleys in book two, but Neville? Neville could have been the chosen one; it's in the books but not in the films, which is probably why many ppl think that it's a theory. I always found Neville's story more tragic than Harry's. people eventually overcome the pain of losing loved ones -Harry doesn't even now anything about his parents for 11 years-, but it's impossible to get over someone who is still visibly alive yet dead for a long time... For me, no character can top Hermione mainly because she showed 6 year old me how how awesome girls can be; as a result I never had a girl-hating-phase. Neville though is definitely on my #2 spot. His enormous development throughout the series, The fact that he found his passion and and stuck to it, his unconditional loyalty to the trio AND the fact that he could have indeed been the chosen one... I kind of wanted Harry to actually die in book 7 so that Neville has to finish the job; which he kind of did, but not quite.

I applaud your passion for Mr Longbottom! I also I thank you for your compassion for Draco, who is along with his family, Lord Voldemort \ T. M. R., Luna, Professor Lupin, & Professor Snape, the person in that world I most identify with. However, what I do find peculiar is that while you have such empathy for so varied an array of lives & persons, & such a determination not to readily forgive certain forms of abuses & cruelties, you have little to no empathy for Severus Snape, who suffered as horrifically as any character in the series for wanton evils & harrowing loneliness ; Espcially odd to me, much harder for me to see even than your animosity for Severus, is your love of James Potter, who was in much of his actions a bully of the worst variety, & that to Severus above all; & we must recall that James was that from the first to Severus without the grave excuses of certain others. The abuse that James ringlead against Severus was so utterly extreme & sadistic... & while I admire Remus in many ways, & do not ignore his sufferings by Severus’ hand, he did nothing whatsoever to seriously attempt to end James’ violence & persecution of what was obviously a very brilliant yet deeply scarred & isolated boy, exhiting little to zero degrees of Neville’s form of bravery, & worse in many ways acting to tacitly approve of his comrades’ worst actions, which in turn causes me to understand why Severus begrudges him so. These thoughts I share here only for reason that I truly wonder how you come to justify & reject as you do in terms of Severus Snape & James Potter while also harbouring such keen awareness of the lasting impact of abuse & empathy for others who have acted malharmonically due to their tragic histories...

I think Neville would make a great Head of Gryffindor House at Hogwarts once Minerva is headmistress. He'd be the kind of guy, like you pointed out, that would be excellent for his students; I think especially for those who might be having difficulties, since he would know exactly how to turn that around. Oh, and Professor of Herbology, of course. My fave character, you ask? That's easy: Luna Lovegood. Her honesty, however blunt is certainly appreciated, but even more important is how unafraid she is to be herself and not really give much of a figg what anybody else thinks. Yes, she comes off as completely insane - also very endearing, btw - but if you really pay close attention when it comes to mattes that really matter she's one of the most well adjusted people in the series. Take for example how well she handled her mother's death when she was nine. Consider how well she took what could be called bullying in stride. How well she was able to comfort and console Harry when Dobby died; and this after being the rock of stability and hope while she, Griphook, and Ollivander were imprisoned at Malfoy Manor... ...so yeah, Luna is the best in my mind.

i feel like Neville would be in Hufflepuff cause he has the qualities of a hufflepuff BUT i feel like he is also better in gryffindor cause he lesrns to bring that internal bravery to the forefront. Not only that, between hufflepuff and gryffindor, hufflepuff doesnt want glory and we dont need it at least not really, but gryffindor gets all the glory cause their bravery is associated with that. AND NEVILLE DESERVES THAT GLORY.

I cant wait for more of these. I love hearing your thoughts on things and learning new theories and such. I'm gonna admit I never thought too much about Neville. He was never that interesting to me because you never heard much about him, but hearing you talk about him has made me love him. It showed me just how much Neville has done and been through. Especially in book 7 when he led the revolution at Hogwarts without really knowing whether or not it was worth it. He's such an important character but it's not obvious that he is.

Yes! I love Neville so much! Favorite character forever! Has anyone read Dumbledores Army and the Year of Darkness by Thanfiction? It is a fanfiction but made me feel all the feels. It focuses on what happened during the year leading up to the war and when our beloved Golden Trio was absent at Hogwarts. And it follows NEVILLE!!!! It really is amazing and I definitely highly recommend it!!❤️😊

I love Neville too...Harry is still my fave character, but he's a very close second. I also thought the whole "chosen one" thing was so cool and so perfect. After we learned about the Prophecy in Order of Phoenix, I just KNEW Neville would play a very important role at the end. I was really hoping JK Rowling would not kill him off, so glad the way his character came out. And you're right, when I learned he was a Hogwarts professor, I thought that was the PERFECT ending for him. By the way, do you ship him with anyone? I never did find a character that I thought was "good enough" for him and that made sense, as far as happy ever after shipping.

Yes! Remember the battle of Hogwarts? Neville rushed to lead the defence of Hogwarts, whereas Harry milled around the corrirdor waiting for someone to tell him what to do, then started taking orders from ghosts. Remember how Neville stood up to the Death Eaters at Hogwarts? The nearest Harry ever did was throw a tantrum at Umbridge. Harry's no hero. Neville's the real thing.

Read Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness on fanfiction.net. One of the best fanfictions I've ever read! Neville is such a great character, and that fanfic shows how amazing he is. I know it's fanfiction, but it's well written and works beautifully with the seventh book. It's actually longer than the seventh book. The author really did well on making it completely realistic. My father sees it as cannon. Lol. I just love it.

I know that you have some serious and very valid problems with Snape, but despite all of his mistakes and general horribleness, I have to say he is one of my favorite characters. He's terribly flawed, does things for all the wrong reasons, and is just not a very nice person, but I love him still the same.
