Harry never forgot his roots. I'm Jamaican and grew up singing most of those songs - folk songs. He takes them to a higher level. His arrangements were perfect.

So proud of Harry Belafonte's work with the Civil Rights Movement. I am Caribbean-American, and am so proud to be Harry's third cousin. Harry's grand mother, and my grandfather were brother and sister. My mother, Florizel Agatha Clarke was the daughter of Dick Clarke who was Irish. My African grandmother and grandfather had seventeen children. So sad they have all passed away. Now, I mourn the death of Harry Belafonte. R.I.P Harry.

I was an impoverished grad student who still put in a bid (and WON!!!!) for two tickets to his show from my local NPR station. None of my friends would go with me so I went by myself! That was back in 1992; I had been a fan since my childhood and he’d also exposed me to Miriam Makeeba. I loved him in my childhood, my 20’s and now in my 50’s. May the Goddess protect you sir!

Before then and ever since I have so loved his voice and his capacity through his interpretation of music to share with us a huge range of human emotions with the added benefit of aspects of Jamaican culture. Aren't we lucky to have ' known' him. A gift to all!

This is Harry Belafonte's biggest hit and I first heard this song when I was a teenager. Everyone loves this song. It is a work song about the men who cut sugar cane in the fields all night because it is so hot during the day. This is true in the Caribbean, which is where his ancestors came from. He is from New York City...

I was the bartender for his 50th Birthday and his daughter Cheri wanted so much to help until I told her to enjoy her father's party. At the end, the entire family lined up, shook my hand, thanked me and paid me. One of the nicest families I have ever met. Later at Gil Noble's apartment, Harry and Andrew Young were there..only these three and not a drop of alcohol was poured for them, they only drank juices...I was and still am impressed. BTW, his wife got two belly dancers for the entertainment!

Well ...time is running & each generation have it's own important singers but for me certainly & naturally Harry Belafonte is a man of tremendous capacity & talent is a great human being that is able with his music somehow to transmitted the communication with the public internally somehow he can find the sweat spot & established the connection is a great artist in my opinion .

Harry your book "My song" was such a treat to read 📚 I genuinely admire your compassion and presence working with organisations to break down the barriers of segregation at the time and also working to release Mandela and work in Africa with him as well as working and being good friends with the late great Martin Luther King. What an amazing life! I also found the marriage photo of you and your latest wife absolutely adorable. Thank-u Harry you are one of this world's treasures. Elaine ❤️

😊 This must be the best delivery of Try to Remember the kind of September that I've ever listened to - the dexterity of the guitarist and other musicians and the mellow beauty of the young man's voice provided a perfect complement for Belafonte's. Each was heard without overpowering the other. Absolutely beautiful 😊!

I thought about the power and the nature of music is like a smoke which bellows from a sources that engulfs it's audiences and fades into thin air. The effect at which it last it's audiences depends in its thickness. A music would fade quickly before it's audience the smoke is lighter and It disappears. But a strong engulfing music stays stronger decades, centuries and generations before it definitely fades finally into the thin air. So these smokes comes out now colourful now in this present generation and it's becoming interesting, intriguing with its dimensions and forms day after day. Especially from Africa and Nigeria in particular. The likes of Burna Boy, Davido, Wizkid, Kizz Daniel, Tems, Awake and many growing. Their smokes will fade away in this generation too. Just like Michael Jackson's memory will fade in the next 50yrs to come and finally.

Having taken in his memoirs I'd say I liked and was excited by his Belafonte Live at Carnegie Hall as a 8-11 yr. old. Now I hear and know the integrity of his songs.. He came from where the Caribbean songs originated and identified with people suffering injustice. Courageous, flawed and wonderful man.
