Great video...on a side note I was wondering if you could do a video on practical "housekeeping" design for bol. For example the practical reality of having a "mud room"/ entrance area between the inner home and the outside. Practical in terms of airborne virus exclusion...climate control (avoiding heat escaping or vis versa) ... insect management. ..less flies, mosquitoes, insect plagues "flying in" etc. Other practicalities such as carpet (with grid down/ limited power if any) vs lino/tiles/ wooden floor etc. Grey/ black water collection, filtration and use etc. Security is often discussed by preppers in terms of humans/ large animals...smaller pests can be overlooked/ underestimated.

I'm loving my freeze dryer. I got it about a month ago, and already have quite a bit stored. What appealed to me most was being able to preserve food that I like, and being able to put away products that can't be safely canned, like sausage gravy (made with the sausage we have custom ground to be low fat and that we love the flavor of), or things like pasta that merely needs boiling water to reconstitute. And cheese. Shredded cheese is delicious even not reconstituted. So is sweet corn. I'm also a backpacker, and took one of my meals of grilled pork loin, green beans, and mashed sweet potatoes, out on the trail last week end. Much better than the typical backpacker freeze dried fare.

It's probably best that you held off anyway. The newer units have the newest software that makes them easier to use and run times shorter. Several improvements over the older units just a year ago. I recommend the oil free pump as well even though it is an extra $1200 - it's worth it. Keep in mind that the small and medium units can run from a standard 15 amp outlet. But the large will require a dedicated 20 amp circuit to run. I'm an electrician so that was no problem for me but it may cost you extra so keep that in mind.

Nice summary of reasons to freeze dry. I would add a couple more to your list: 9- Easier to maintain a vacuum seal. The vacuum seal in canning for, instance, can be broken due to temperature fluctuations. If you live in an area of more extreme temperatures, a Mylar bag will maintain the vacuum seal much better than traditional canning. 10- I came upon an article which mentioned the possibility of food prices to increase up to 300% due to more extreme weather events. These were particularly highlighted for grains such as wheat, rice, and corn. Freeze drying allows you to eat tomorrow at today’s prices.

I used to work on pharmaceutical freeze dryers I have had a idia for years to make one for myself at home it's not very difficult. Especially if you pre -freeze the items going in and just use a coil from a dorm freezer to help keep the food frozen during a run. Vacuum chambers are relatively easy to Build and I then all you gotta do is hook a pump to it.

I live in an air dryer called Nevada. America's driest state. When we have 4% humidity it's easy to dry foods out.
@jerrysmith372
@jerrysmith372 5 жыл бұрын
Yea, I live in Vegas. But leaving food out in the sun to dry is called dehydrating and involves a heat process which will work but will only store under the best conditions up to 5 years. Freese drying is a cold process at around -40 and gently heats the food (never above -20) so the moisture sublimates and dries the food and that is what makes it shelf stable up to 25 years.

It would be nice if it cost less, but honestly people pay as much for a top of the line refrigerator these days as a freeze dryer costs. And more for some toys, like four wheelers, boats, even some top of the line bicycles. And as much or more for tools such as lawn mowers. If you look at it compared to these items, it really is as affordable as any of them.

Recommend everyone to try it, by the way, everything is in pots as I live in an apartment! I also got a pineapple that's growing beautifully, has one year yet to give fruit but looking forward to harvest everything in two months! Good luck and NEVER give up!!!! Oil free pump? Didn't know that was now an option. I know this vid was looking at the practical reasons for freeze drying but I can't help but mention the problems globally with the upcoming food supply. Flooded croplands in the Midwest and overseas many countries are suffering from drought. Australia, an exporter of wheat, is now importing. Cattle, chickens, and hogs will be impacted as well. This should definitely be in everyone's home. Thanks!

I'm pretty excited about buying the cheap 10# bags of legs & thighs, boiling them all up in the nesco slowcooker, canning the broth & freeze drying the MEAT, which will fall off the bone and have most of the fat cooked off into the broth. The 10# bags are SO MUCH WORK to split up, trim, & freeze pieces separately, and that's done before I even COOK. So this project is one of the first I'll try - ordered a Medium-White FD 3 days ago, cannot wait to receive it!

@@hansmcq9833 Well that's personal choice. I wish I had space for a second machine. I do like the oil less pump. When I ordered my machine, the pump was on back order and they sent me a standard oil pump to use. It's OK but I did hate dealing with the oil filtering after each batch. I guess now they have a better oil pump that only requires filtering every 10 batches, or something like that. My oil less pump did develop a loud noise in the first 6 months of using it but HR covered the shipping and rebuilt it for me with in 2 weeks. That was 18 months ago and I haven't had a single issue since. It gets run almost 24/7. I don't suppose it will run forever but when it does get worn out I'll have it rebuilt again. If you asked me if I would buy it again - I would say yes. For me it is worth the extra money to have no maintenance.

I am really thinking about getting one, but I would definitely want the oil-free pump. I just can't quite figure out how to convince the wife of it yet, lol. She is definitely not into prepping, she does not believe in storing any food at home and goes to the grocery store a minimum of 3 to 4 days a week to get food for basically that day and maybe the next if I am lucky. Unfortunately, that is the culture here in Hawaii, no one believes in having a pantry, so if anything were to happen they would not even have a 3 day supply of food to last them. I have been trying to stock foods up on my own that she doesn't even know about. If anything happens now she will be freaking out, but I know that I at least have a few months worth hidden away that she doesn't even know I have bought. But I hate buying cans of freeze-dried products to store when I could do it myself much cheaper, and without all the preservatives that most of those companies add in their foods. Plus there is the shipping costs of getting the food shipped to Hawaii which definitely is not cheap. Hopefully, I will figure out a way to approach her with the subject soon.

Look at it as an investment into your future. If you are buying #10 cans of freeze dried food, on average it only takes about 100 cans to pay for a freeze dryer. Or use it to save $20 a week on meals by buying things on sale and putting them back for later, and pay for it within 3 years. Save even more by having a convenient freeze dried meal and saving the cost of a pizza when you are too tired to cook. Last weekend, three of us decided to order a pizza together at a Girl Scout overnight, and it was $26 for a large pizza!

I've seen a few different people's taste test and reviews of Mountain House's Chili Mac and everyone raved about it. It re-hydrated well and was delicious ! So I thought I'd suggest that as an easy meal to double or triple if you have a good recipe ( there are plenty on Pinterest,just look at a bunch and combine the recipes that have ingredients your family likes )Then you could have one batch for dinner and freeze dry 2 batches, maybe minus one serving for your lunch the next day. As for your RV trip, I know what a pain they are to clean because I use to detail them for a living. I might suggest saving the amount of servings for how many people will be eating it, in a Mylar bag, whatever size leaves you enough room for the water to rehydrate the product, then do just what you would do if it were a mountain house meal and hydrate it in the bag and serve in the cardboard type of paper bowls found at most dollar stores. If you use plastic ware you might only have a stirring/ serving spoon to wash. I have watched lots of reviews of assorted freeze dried foods and the hardest thing is to figure out how much water to add.I might put one family serving amount on each tray then it's easy to know how much to put in each bag. I would love to have a freeze dryer but on disability I doubt I ever will. I can't even afford 1 mason jar ! LOL ! Have fun with your not so new toy .

You're right the oil free pump is not cheap, but it is worth the money. Just FYI - oil free doesn't mean maintenance free. Instructions from Harvest Right is after about 10 to 12 batches run the pump with suction hose disconnected from the dryer and pour 1/2 cup of alcohol down the hose and repeat (2 or 3 times) until the exhaust blows clear to remove any build up that may have accumulated in the pump. I bought my large unit in December 2018 and have done about 50 or so batches. I try to process a lot of meat, but you need to be careful how much fat is in you're meat and reduce that as much as you can. Meats with fat can go rancid and may only be shelf stable 5 to 8 years. Fruits, vegies, dairy, home cooked meals are also some I've been putting away.I really enjoy my HR dryer and the oil free pump makes it actually fun to operate. I bought it to store food and my research discovered that canning and dehydrating had 2 to 5 years of shelf life. Not what I call long term. Also to save money compared to buying store processed freeze dried foods. The HR dryer will pay for itself after 50 or so batches.Thanks for the video. Happy prepping.

@Mary Mulford maybe google Holodomor and rethink that snarky retort. It can certainly happen. Happens all the time in places like North Korea. People survive on what they can find because officials will steal every little bit of food that you own. They even took food from people's gardens. We very well could be there this coming decade. Just look at the poor Australians living in a police state. Obviously keep your preps within reason but I certainly would keep these at least somewhat hidden in case a no knock search warrant turns into a no knock food search.

Honey cannot be freeze dried. Neither can plain chocolate or cubes of butter. Also, not much fat or greasy foods. Fats do not freeze dry and storage is cut way down due to rancidity. Harvest RIght provides a list of foods that cannot or should not be freeze dried (it's a very short list!).

I received my small freeze dryer a few weeks ago. I'm still learning. Is the oil free pump any quieter than the oil type and does it make the area as hot. I have mine in an enclosed porch. I can't imagine having it on my kitchen counter. It's way to loud. Thank you!
@jerrysmith372
@jerrysmith372 3 жыл бұрын
Yes the oil less pump is much quieter. However it is designed to operate at 130 F and does cast off heat. Also a word of caution - the dryers are designed to operate in temperatures between 35 and 85 F - if it's too hot, your dryer will have to work extra hard to freeze the foods and may take much longer to dry the foods or even be unable to complete the cycle. I don't have space in my house for my large dryer and oil less pump - mine is in my garage. Living in the desert southwest my garage can get to over 120 F and impossible to operate my dryer. I had to design and build a custom air system using a bathroom ceiling fan mounted in the wall to bring cool air from the house, ducted through the dryer and back to the house while sealing up all the vent holes in the dryer cabinet. It keeps it at 85 F or less in the summer months and helps warm the house in winter. I've been drying foods for 2 years now - how do you like your dryer?

I learned from other KZfaqrs to put a small fan blowing on the oil pump-helps to keep it from getting so hot. The pump that comes with it (I also have the small freeze dryer) is expected to get to around 160 degrees at times! And yes, it is loud. I live in the high desert at 6200' in Nevada.

Hello City Prepping I have the large Harvest Right dryer with the 7CF oiled pump. I never reuse my oil because fresh oil works best and the pump I just large enough to pull a 500um vacuum in 20-25 minutes on the large machine. I was wondering if you have been using the new pump long enough to get a gauge on it’s energy usage. I have heard it pulls a vacuum more quickly. I would like to know if it uses less electricity also. I only tend to use my machine one or twice a month because of energy usage. And I have actually gotten letters and emails from my utilities complaining about my increased usage when I run the machine. Thank you.

Mine was only $2500, shipping and all, for the medium with the standard pump, which performs just fine and just takes a little extra time. I look at it as an investment, not just for SHTF, but for every day use. Lots of people think nothing of spending $50 at a restaurant once a week. Do that for a year, and you've invested $2500 and have nothing really to show for it. Trade vehicles every couple of years, and you lose more value than that over time. It's really a matter of where you want to invest. For me, I consider it a worthwhile investment, because I will use it for other things as well as for stocking up in case SHTF.

Hello, what kind of maintenance is associated with the freeze dryer?
@appalachianwanderseeker
@appalachianwanderseeker 5 жыл бұрын
If you have the pump that uses oil, you drain it and filter the oil and refill it after each batch of food, and take it apart to clean after about 30 batches (or possible less using Dairyland oil). With the oil free pump, there is some minor maintenance, but since I don't have one, I can't really say for sure what the process is on that. Other than that, simply defrosting and wiping the unit out after each batch before putting the next one in.
